Softball Wraps Up Rain-Shortened Spring Fling with Extra-Inning Win Sat, Apr 3, 2010 at 6:08 PM - [Softball]
Freshman Kalli Tobias sent the game to extra innings with her first collegiate home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.JOLIET - Morning rain forced the cancellation of all but the final game scheduled for the weekend's University of St. Francis Spring Fling softball tourney on Saturday, but the Saints and Goshen College Maple Leafs gave the fans their money's with an 8-7 USF win over Goshen in nine innings at the Inwood Softball Complex.
The lead changed hands four times in a game that saw the two squads score a total of 15 runs and strand a total of 25 baserunners.
USF made the final comeback in the sixth and seventh innings to force extra frames and then finally pushed across the winning run in the ninth on a bases-loaded single by senior center fielder Kendel Behrens (Morris H.S./Morris, IL).
The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a run-scoring single by junior catcher C.J. Rupsis (Bolingbrook H.S./Bolingbrook, IL). The lead was short lived, though, as Goshen capitalized on a two-out error by the Saints in the top of the fourth and scored twice to take a 2-1 lead.
St. Francis retaliated quickly with four runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth to jump out to a 5-2 lead. Senior second baseman Beth Boezeman (Lincoln-Way East H.S./Frankfort, IL) drove home the first two runs of the inning with a two-out single and that was followed by consecutive doubles by senior first baseman Lynley Louzensky (Tinley Park H.S./Oak Forest, IL) and Rupsis.
After a scoreless fifth inning for each team, Goshen rapped out five hits sandwiched around a USF error to score five times before the Saints were able to record on out in the top of the sixth.
USF chipped away at the 7-5 deficit and got within a run in the bottom of the sixth when Louzensky drilled her second straight run-scoring double to right field.
The Saints finally got the game back to even in the bottom of the seventh when freshman left fielder Kalli Tobias (Lincoln-Way Central H.S./Manhattan, IL) belted her first collegiate home run with one out.
Both teams squandered opportunities to score in the eighth inning, with Goshen leaving a pair of runners on base and USF stranding three after loading the bases with just one out.
The Saints again held Goshen scoreless in the ninth and again put runners at second and third with no one out in their half of the inning. It appeared the Goshen was going to work its way out of the trouble again before Behrens completed her perfect day at the plate (4-for-4, a walk, a sacrifice and the game-winning RBI) with the two-out winning hit.
Boezeman, Louzensky, Rupsis and Tobias all added two hits apiece to the Saints' 14-hit attack.

Senior center fielder Kendel Behrens went 3-for-6 on the day with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.JOLIET - A four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted University of St. Francis to a 7-5 victory over Iowa Wesleyan College and a split of the Saints' first two games in this weekend's five-team USF Spring Fling at the Inwood Softball Complex.
USF began play Friday afternoon with a 10-2, 5-inning loss to Indiana Wesleyan University but the Saints bounced back in the day's final game to snap their three-game losing streak with a 7-run, 9-hit attack.

The visiting Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning before the Saints scored three times in the third inning with a run-scoring single from junior right fielder Kaylee Shell (Wilmington H.S./Wilmington, IL) and a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by senior second baseman Beth Boezeman (Lincoln-Way East H.S./Frankfort, IL) being the key plays.
Iowa Wesleyan regained the edge with a four-run fourth that included a 2-out, 3-run home run.
The Saints' winning rally in the fifth was highlighted by a run-scoring single by senior center fielder Kendel Behrens (Morris H.S./Morris, IL) and a 2-run single by Boezeman. Junior shortstop Caitlin Dolan (Lincoln-Way East H.S./Frankfort, IL) capped off the rally with an RBI single to push the lead to 7-5.
Junior right-hander Kim Malacina (Lockport H.S./Homer Glen, IL) earned the win in relief of freshman righty Jordan Halata (Lockport H.S./Homer Glen, IL). Malacina allowed just one hit and no runs in 3.1 innings pitched and struck out four.

Loyola Strikes Early, Beats Wright State, 8-2 Ramblers register 13 hits and Funston tosses complete-game for victory
April 3, 2010
Box Score
DAYTON, Ohio - A high-powered Loyola University Chicago (10-13, 2-3 Horizon) offense recorded 13 hits en route to an 8-2 victory over Wright State in the finale of a three-game weekend series this afternoon. The Ramblers have now won four of their last five games.
Showing signs of clicking after an early-season slump, the Loyola bats got things started in the top of the second inning and Lauren Arceneaux's two-run double highlighted a three-run frame that gave the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Wright State got a run closer in the bottom half of the inning thanks to Mollie Berry's RBI double, but in the top of the third, Stephanie Cihlar reached on a one-out single and one batter later, Angie Funston crushed a two-run homer to left to put Loyola ahead, 5-1.
The Ramblers tacked on a run in the top of the fourth inning on Brooke Andresen's RBI single that plated Ellen Kresl and in the seventh, wrapped up their scoring when Arceneaux stroked a two-run double to provide the final score.
Cihlar and Kresl each tallied three hits on the day, while Jenna Grim and Arceneaux (four RBI) recorded two hits apiece. Funston was solid in the pitching circle, tossing a complete game and scattering seven hits while striking out a pair.
Loyola is back in action Wednesday, April 7 when it hosts a doubleheader versus UIC.

Dartmouth Softball Splits Twinbill with Sacred Heart Courtesy: Dartmouth Release: 04/07/2010 Courtesy: John and Matt Risley JTRSPORTS.NET Evan Gray picked up her first win of the season with a complete game shutout over Sacred Heart Game One Boxscore Game Two Boxscore
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Freshman Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) scored a complete game shutout in the nightcap as Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) tallied two home runs to help the Dartmouth softball team take a 7-0 win in Game Two, avenging a 4-1 loss in the first game to non conference foe Sacred Heart on Wednesday afternoon. The victory is Gray's first of the season.
Sacred Heart (12-15) took an early 1-0 lead in the opening game as they pushed across a run in the bottom of the first. The Pioneers extended the advantage to 4-0 with three runs in their half of the third.
Dartmouth (4-18) scored its only run of the game in the top of the fourth after a Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) reached on a Sacred Heart error and then came around to score when Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) singled to right field. SHU's Jen Russell picked up her seventh win of the season allowing just five hits and striking out five batters. In the circle for the Big Green, Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) went the complete game, allowing just three earned runs while striking out two. In the second game, Dartmouth began swinging the bats early as the Big Green put three across in the top of the opening frame. Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) walked to reach base and advanced on a fielders choice that put Costello on. Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) walked to load the bases before two straight strikeouts looked like Dartmouth might strand the batters. Clarkson kept things going by reaching base on a wild pitch as Yee came around to score. A single to center field by Alyssa Parker scored two as the Big Green ended the inning ahead, 3-0.
In the top of the next inning, Costello kept things going with a two-out homerun to left center and then Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) got her own homerun to put the score at 5-0 in the top of the third.
In the circle, Gray allowed three hits through three innings but had kept the Pioneers off the board as the freshman had struck out one. The Big Green defense held in the fourth when Sacred Heart had runners at second and third but were unable to get either of them home.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, the Pioneers loaded the bases but Gray got the final batter to fly out to right field, keeping the shutout intact.
Yee began the seventh with a single down the left field line before Costello blasted her second homer of the contest to give Dartmouth a 7-0 lead as the home team came up for its last at-bats of the contest.
Costello, Hubert and Khalil each had two hits while Costello led with three runs scored and three RBIs. Gray earned the win with a complete-game shutout. She allowed just one walk while striking out two.
The Big Green opens up the home portion of its schedule this weekend with a pair of Ivy League doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. Game time against Columbia on Friday is 2:00 pm while the twinbill on Saturday against Penn begins at 12:30.

Loyola Falls To Green Bay, 7-6 In Extra Innings Funston belts eighth homer of the season
April 15, 2010
Box Score
GREEN BAY, Wis. - Green Bay (19-9, 5-3 Horizon) rallied from a 4-1 deficit and pulled out a 7-6 victory in eight innings over Loyola University Chicago (14-16, 6-6 Horizon) this afternoon at Ben Garot Field. The Phoenix claimed the series, winning two of the three midweek games as the Ramblers fell for just the fourth time in their last 12 outings.
Angie Funston, who has had an outstanding spring both at the plate and in the pitching circle, got the Ramblers on the board in the top of the first inning when she crushed a two-run home run, her eighth of the year, for an early 2-0 advantage.
After Green Bay got a run back in the third inning, Loyola stretched its lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the fourth. Jacqueline Grim led off the inning with a double and Tori Spears, who pinch-ran for Grim, would later come around to score on Kristen Medrud's double. Brooke Andresen's single, which extended her hitting streak to 16 games, would score Stevie Bradich, who was running for Medrud, to put Loyola ahead, 4-1.
Green Bay evened things up in the bottom of the fifth however, when Danielle Peerenboom belted a three-run homer to left center, and the Phoenix went ahead (5-4) in the sixth on Melani Niederer's RBI groundout.
Loyola showed its resiliency despite seeing its three-run lead evaporate, as it plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to surge ahead, 6-5, thanks in large part to three Green Bay errors in the inning. However, the Ramblers were unable to make that lead stand up as Krissy Hanson's one-out triple scored pinch runner Andrea Pigeon, to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh. Loyola escaped further damage and forced extra innings as it stranded Hanson at third.
After the Ramblers went down in order in the top of the eighth, Jenna Nitti reach on a one-out walk and came around to score the game-winning run on a Rambler error following a single by Sara Junion.
Seven Ramblers tallied a hit off a pair of Phoenix hurlers and Funston drove in a pair with her career-best eighth home run of the season. Stephanie Cihlar tallied a hit, scored a pair of runs and stole two bases.
Loyola is off this weekend and resumes play on April 20 when it hosts a doubleheader versus Saint Louis.
