Loyola Capitalizes On Solid Pitching, NIU Miscues For Sweep Ramblers roll past Northern Illinois, 6-0 in nightcap
April 27, 2010
Box Score
CHICAGO - Hilary Payne tossed six shutout innings and Loyola University Chicago (18-19) capitalized on five Northern Illinois (20-28) errors en route to a 6-0 victory in game two of a doubleheader at Loyola Softball Park this evening. The Ramblers have now prevailed in eight of their last 10 home games and posted their first doubleheader sweep since April 10 versus Youngstown State.
In the top of the second inning, pinch hitter Kristen Medrud drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run as Loyola staked claim to a 1-0 lead and in essence, got all the runs it would need on the day. The Ramblers took full advantage of Northern Illinois' poor fielding in the third inning, scoring a pair of runs as the Huskies committed three miscues in that frame alone.
Ellen Kresl, who had led off the third inning by reaching on an error by NIU's shortstop, later would score on another Huskie miscue before Jacqueline Grim perfectly executed a squeeze play to put Loyola on top, 3-0.
The Ramblers added two more runs in the fourth courtesy of RBI singles from Brooke Andresen and Angie Funston, then added one more run for good measure in the fifth on Kresl's run-scoring infield hit.
Payne was impressive yet again in mid-week work as she allowed only two hits and struck out three en route to her fifth win of the season. Amy Solava came on and tossed a perfect inning of relief to complement Payne's solid performance.
Offensively, the Ramblers banged out nine hits as Kresl, Bridget Lally and Stevie Bradich posted two hits apiece. Freshman sensation Brooke Andresen had her beat go on as her fourth-inning single stretched her consecutive-game hitting streak to a remarkable 23 contests.
Loyola is back in action Thursday, April 29, when it hosts a doubleheader against UIC, beginning at 4 p.m.

Bridget Paine Ties Home Run Record In Butler Win INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Senior shortstop Bridget Paine slugged her school-record 11th home run of the season and Butler held on to post a 5-4 victory over visiting Wright State in the final game of a three-game Horizon League series at the Butler Softball Field on Wednesday, April 21. The win lifted the Bulldogs to 35-11 on the season and 11-5 in league play.
Paine launched a two-run shot over the centerfield fence to spark a three-run third inning for the Bulldogs. The round-tripper tied the school record set by teammate Erin Falkenberry a year ago. It was Paine’s 19th career home run.
Butler jumped to a 4-0 lead in the contest, and the Bulldogs led 5-1 after five innings. But the Raiders (18-23, 9-6 HL) rallied with two runs off of starter Jenny Esparza in the sixth inning and a third run off of relief pitcher Jennifer Chasteen in the seventh, before Paine recorded the game’s final out on a ground ball in the final frame.
Paine had a pair of doubles to go with her home run, fueling Butler’s 11-hit attack. Senior Annie Dolan and sophomore Lauren McNulty each added a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.
Esparza, who added to her school-record for victories, improved to 17-4 on the season with the win. She allowed just four hits in five innings of work. Chasteen picked up her first save of the season. The win snapped Wright State’s five-game winning streak.
The Bulldogs, playing at home for the final time this season, improved to 12-4 at the Butler Softball Field in 2010. Head coach Jeanne Rayman will take her squad on the road for its final six regular season games, beginning with a three-game set at first place Cleveland State, April 24-25.

Dartmouth Softball Has Rally Cut Short, Ends Season With Loss to Harvard Courtesy: Dartmouth Release: 05/02/2010 Courtesy:
Leigha Clarkson knocked two home runs on the day, finishing the season with seven. Game One Boxscore Game Two Boxscore
HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth softball team took an early lead in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday off a three-run home run by Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.), her second of the day, but Harvard was able to come back and claim the win, 6-5 in eight innings, sweeping the Big Green after taking game one, 7-1.
In the opening game, the Crimson used two home runs in the top of the third to end a scoreless tie and plate four runs on three hits to take an early lead. A double by Whitney Shaw in the fourth added two more runs for the visitors. Another run in the top of the fifth gave Harvard the 7-0 lead.
Dartmouth was able to get one back off Clarkson's first home run of the day, a long ball over the fence in left field. The Big Green was not able to score any more, dropping the game, 7-1.
Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) was 2-for-3 at the plate while Yee, Clarkson and Parker each had single hits. In the circle, Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) went 4.2 innings with five strikeouts before being replaced by Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.).
In the nightcap it was Dartmouth that jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first frame. Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) doubled to center field and moved to third off a sacrifice bunt by Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.). A double by Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) plated Yee before Clarkson blasted her second long ball of the day, scoring two. With that homer, Clarkson tied classmate Costello as well as Jodee Thompson '05 for the single season home run record as each recorded seven.
Despite both sides getting hits in each inning, neither was able to put any more runs on the board until Harvard finally got one back in the top off the third as Melissa Schelberg singled to right field.
The in the top of the seventh the Crimson bats came alive, scoring four to take a 5-3 lead as Shaw hit her second home run of the day. The Big Green came to bat in the bottom of the inning with nothing to lose.
Alyssa Parker reached first after being plunked by pitcher Margaux Black. A one-out single by Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) moved Parker to second before Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) singled to center, scoring Parker. Yee reached on an error after hitting back to Black, Kolodziej came home easily to score the tying run.
But in the top of the eighth two singles up the middle by Harvard, gave the visitors its second sweep of the Big Green in as many days.
Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) began the game in the circle for Dartmouth, going six innings and taking the loss. She was replaced by Hicks who finished the game as the two combined for three strikeouts. Rachel Brown started the game for the Crimson, going four innings before being replaced by Black. Brown struck out seven and give up Dartmouth's first three runs.
Clarkson was the only Big Green player to record multiple hits as she went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs. Yee, Khalil, Kolodziej, Autin and Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) each recorded one hit.
Dartmouth ended its season with a 14-27 overall record, 11-9 in the Ivy League. Loyola Closes Out Season With 4-0 Victory Over Detroit Stillson tosses three-hit shutout for third win of the season
May 9, 2010
Box Score
CHICAGO - Seana Stillson tossed a three-hit shutout and Stephanie Cihlar had two hits and scored twice as Loyola University Chicago (22-24, 10-12 Horizon) earned a 4-0 victory over visiting Detroit (3-39, 0-24 Horizon) this afternoon in game two of a doubleheader. The Ramblers close out the season on a three-game winning streak.
Amy Solava's RBI single scored Cihlar, who had reached on a one-out bunt single, to give the Ramblers a 1-0 lead after one inning of play. The game would remain a pitcher's duel between Stillson and Detroit's Kara Spinelli until the Ramblers hung another run on the board in the fifth on Kristen Medrud's sacrifice fly, which scored pinch runner Stevie Bradich.
Bradich utilized her speed to get into scoring position as she swiped second base and scampered to third on a throwing error by Titans catcher Erica Houthoofd. Loyola added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning as it finished the three-game series with a grand total of 32 runs.
Stillson was able to stay out of trouble virtually the entire game and the Titans mounted their only real threat in the sixth inning when Stefanie Morong doubled with one out, but the righthander was able to escape the jam unscathed.
Medrud and Solava each had a hit and a RBI in their final games as Ramblers.
Loyola loses five seniors from a class that rolled up 93 wins in four seasons.

St. Francis (IL) News Softball Fights Off Elimination with CCAC Tourney Win over Trinity Christian Thu, May 6, 2010 - [Softball]
Junior pitcher Kim Malacina fired a four-hit shutout vs. Trinity Christian to keep the Saints alive.BOURBONNAIS, Ill. - Junior Kim Malacina (Lockport H.S./Homer Glen, Ill.) fired a four-hit shutout and struck out five batters as University of St. Francis staved off elimination with a 5-0 victory over Trinity Christian College Thursday afternoon in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Championship Tournament.
The Saints (22-25) lost a first-round game to Robert Morris University by a 4-3 score earlier in the day.
USF scored three runs in the top of the second inning against Trinity Christian (17-32) and never looked back. Sophomore third baseman Brittany Bochenek (Lockport H.S./Lockport, Ill.) drove home a pair of runs with a single and senior left fielder Maggie O'Shea (Wheeler H.S./Valparaiso, IN) then knocked in Bochenek one out later with a base hit.
The Saints added two more tallies in the fifth on a two-run single by junior catcher Carolyn Rupsis (Bolingbrook H.S./Bolingbrook, IL).
Rupsis and junior right fielder Kaylee Shell (Wilmington H.S./Wilmington, IL) each had three hits to lead USF's 12-hit attack. Senior second baseman Beth Boezeman (Lincoln-Way East H.S./Frankfort, IL) and O'Shea finished the TCC contest with two hits apiece.
USF let a 3-1 led get away in the morning game with Robert Morris (37-18). The Eagles tied the game in the fifth with an unearned run and then won the game in the seventh with another run that was unearned.
The Saints grabbed the 3-1 lead with a three-run third that featured an RBI single by Boezeman and a two-run double off the bat of senior first baseman Stacy Heap (Minooka H.S./Minooka, IL).
USF was held to just four hits in the game, with Heap leading the way on the strength of two doubles. Boezeman and O'Shea had the other two safeties.
USF will try to stay alive again Friday with a noon game against the winner of a 10 a.m. elimination between Judson University and Robert Morris. A Saints' win would put them into a 4 p.m. contest against the loser of the tourney's two unbeaten teams -- Saint Xavier and Olivet Nazarene -- who play each other at 2 p.m.

Saint Xavier Falls Twice to No. 19 Olivet Nazarene; Ends Season Saturday, May 08, 2010
Senior right fielder Rebekah Ruettiger was named to the 2010 CCAC All-Tournament Team Bourbonnais, Ill. – Senior right fielder Rebekah Ruettiger (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) finished the day with two hits, a run scored and a RBI, but No. 2 seeded Saint Xavier University could not manufacture enough offense to keep pace with No. 1 seed and No. 19 ranked Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) Saturday dropping two games for the championship of the 2010 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Softball Tournament in Bourbonnais, Ill. Posting just three hits in the first game, the Cougars (32-18 overall) fell by a score of 9-1 and then the Tigers used a big first-inning to record a 9-2 win in game two. ONU earns the CCAC’s automatic bid for the 2010 NAIA Softball Championships, which begin on May 20, by winning the tournament championship. Following the games, SXU had five players named to the 2010 CCAC All-Tournament Team, including Ruettiger, senior pitcher Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher), junior centerfielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster), junior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and junior catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac).
The Cougars had difficulty most of both games generating the timely hit leaving a combined 16 runners stranded on the base paths. Ruettiger provided the only offensive highlight for SXU in game one when she hit a RBI double to left field in the bottom of the second inning to make the score, 4-1. The big play for Saint Xavier in Saturday’s second game came with two outs in the bottom of the fourth when junior second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) belted a two-RBI single down the left field line. Shearer threw the entire second game for SXU finishing the year with a 17-5 overall mark and six strikeouts in her final outing.
Saint Xavier ends its 2010 season with a 32-18 overall record. The Cougars finished second overall in the final CCAC regular season standings with a 15-3 mark.
