Huskies deal Mustangs first loss of season April 14, 2010By CHRISTINE BOLIN For Sun-Times Media
Font Size Email Bookmark Black Text White TextThe Naperville North softball team and pitcher Emily Dieckmann had their most outstanding win of the season against Downers Grove South.
Dieckmann held the hard-hitting Mustangs to just four hits, helping the Huskies beat the previously undefeated Downers Grove South, 3-1 Tuesday in Naperville.
"This is definitely a big win," Naperville North coach Jerry Kedziora said. "It's been a long time since we've beaten Downers Grove South ... it was awesome."
"I just came out here really loose, and I really felt confident," Dieckmann said. "I just went with that mindset."
Downers Grove South's leadoff hitter, Marissa Mersch, scored the Mustangs' lone run in the first when she hit a double, moved to third on Dana Gawel's sacrifice bunt and scored on Katie LaCivita's sac fly RBI.
Naperville North quickly tied the game in the bottom of the inning when the leadoff hitter, Sammy Marshall, singled, stole second, was pushed to third on Kendall Vassar's sacrifice bunt and scored on Caitlyn Warren's ground out RBI.
The Huskies took advantage of a cluster of Downers Grove South errors in the next inning. Tara Degl'Inocenti reached on error and eventually reached home and Jess Stapleton scored on another error after she singled.
"We made four errors total -- three in that inning alone, and you just can't do that," said Downers Grove South coach Ron Havelka, whose team dropped to 5-1 overall. "They took advantage of them, and that was just enough for them to get the win."
"We finally got some breaks today," Kedziora added. "We've played teams who didn't make any errors and didn't catch any breaks. We really took advantage of that. It was good to see them put everything together."
Naperville North finished with 7 hits -- 4 of which were singles in the fifth inning off Downers Grove South pitcher Jenny Nichols. Marshall and Stapleton each finished with a pair of hits. Both teams struck out just twice, and neither pitcher allowed a walk. All of the Mustangs' hits were scattered, and no one finishing with multiple hits.
The Huskies improve to 3-5 overall.

LISLE -- Opportunities.
Winning or losing usually depends on how well you handle the chances you're given.
MORE PHOTOS
For a photo gallery of this game, visit napersun.com . The Naperville North softball team was on the winning side of Wednesday's matchup at Benet thanks to timely hits that drove in runs.
The Redwings, however, did not capitalize in a 4-2 loss to the Huskies (4-5), lengthening their losing streak to six games.
"We had three opportunities with runners on third base and less than two outs and we didn't get them in," Benet coach Jerry Schilf said. "That was the difference in the game."
North appeared to be rolling through four innings, scoring a run in all but the second inning, while having committed three errors with no harm done.
"We were lucky to be able to get some runs early and take pressure off our defense," Huskies coach Jerry Kedziora said. "Then we got a big hit at the end of the game to give us some insurance."
The Redwings (4-7) finally got something going in the bottom of the fifth.
Lauren Ladowski doubled off the center field wall with no outs, driving in Kendall Duffy from first.
Then starting pitcher Allyson Staats doubled to the gap in left center, driving in Duffy to pull Benet back within one.
But North kept the pressure on Benet and swung the momentum back in its favor.
Kendall Vassar doubled to right center and scored on a single by Caitlyn Warren who went to right field for her first hit and second RBI.
"This group of girls over the last few days has found what it takes to win," Kedziora said. "They've been battling really hard. The way this game went back and forth -- I haven't seen a team stay in control this way in a long time. It was fun to see."
Vassar, back at third base after an injury-plagued preseason and slow start to the regular season, came up big with two hits and drove in a run from her new spot in the two-hole.
"I've been working hard on my bunts and getting stuff down," Vassar said.
It was the power, however, that drew the praise.
Said Kredziora: "Her hit in the seventh inning was probably her biggest of the year. We had a discussion two games ago and said step it up and she responded. She's done a great job the past two days in that spot."
Sammy Marshall and Stephanie Tobin also had two hits for the Huskies.
Despite another defeat, Benet showed signs of life in a relatively young season.
There's always time to improve some aspect of your game, just ask Staats who got her big hit one at bat after striking out with runners on, then letting the outcome affect her pitching.
"It's hard to go from hitting (to pitching), especially if you get down," Staats said. "I've learned I have to pick up my teammates too. If my team is out there giving it their all, then I have to as well."
Lindsay Rohan and Shellie Schaffer also got hits for the Redwings.
Maureen Connelly had a hit and scored a run for North.

Rogers saves the day for McAuley High School Roundup Comments
March 19, 2010
BY TONY BARANEK Mother McAuley sophomore Ashley Rogers made her varsity mound debut in the fourth inning Thursday in the Mighty Macs' 5-3 victory over host Tinley Park. Before she threw her first pitch to the Titans' Alyssa Gunter, she received a really strange set of instructions from coach Colleen Kilduff.
"Don't smile at her! Don't laugh at her!" Kilduff barked from the dugout. "Throw the ball like you've never seen her before."
Huh?
"Oh, she (Gunter) was on my club team (Orland Sparks)," a smiling Rogers said. "We've known each other for a while."
Rogers retired Gunter on a groundout to second, then struck out the next two batters. The right-hander went on to face the minimum 12 batters, earning the save for winning pitcher Katie Sears.
Rogers, who started the game as the DP, also contributed a run-scoring double, while Katie Adent added a two-run double for Mother McAuley (1-0).
For Tinley Park (0-1), Staci Bonezek stroked a single and an RBI triple, while Stacey Pickrum had a two-run double. Righty Jenna Moravec settled down after a shaky start to blank McAuley over the final four innings.
The game marked the first for both teams with the mound having been moved back to 43 feet. There was plenty of offense early on, with each starter recording just one strikeout through three innings. But Rogers, who pitched on McAuley's JV in 2009, looked confident right out of the box.
"I've been pitching from (43 feet) since the fall league," said Rogers, who finished with four strikeouts. "When I first started my pitches were breaking too early. But I've adjusted."
Her bid for a perfect four-inning relief stint ended with one out in the seventh, when Megan McCampbell reached base on a throwing error. Returning All-Area catcher Alex Raske promptly gunned down McCampbell as she tried to steal second.
Tinley Park, meanwhile, showed some mettle. The Titans rallied from a 1-0 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the first. After falling behind 5-1, they rallied for two runs in the third behind a power surge by Bonezek (single), Amber Buss (double) and Pickrum (double). All three drives were shots.
"We're focusing on offense," Tinley Park coach Wendy Podbielniak said. "I'm teaching the kids to be aggressive. We're going up there to hit, not just make contact. We've got some work to do on defense, but we're taking it one step at a time. We've got some good kids."
Chicago Christian 11, Evergreen Park 1: Lindsey Norway pitched a one-hitter and struck out 11 in pacing host Chicago Christian (1-1) to the six-inning victory. Norway also starred at the plate, belting a three-run triple, knocking in four runs and scoring twice. Evergreen Park fell to 0-1.
