Wildcats top mistake-prone Red Devils April 22, 2010BY JOHN O'MALLEY, POST-TRIBUNE CORRESPONDENT
Font Size Email Bookmark Black Text White TextCEDAR LAKE -- Lowell coach Pete Iussig saw something Wednesday he hasn't seen in two decades.
"I don't ever remember a Lowell team having seven errors in a game," he said. "I don't even recall a game with six. I'm sure I could go back, when we were getting 10-runned in the early 90s, and find one, but I can't ever remember anything quite like this. I'm beyond shocked."
The Red Devils (7-5) committed those miscues behind pitcher Jacki Fletcher -- who probably deserved a better fate -- and never really seemed to figure out a way to get to Hanover Central pitcher, Kelsey Jankowski.
Jankowski scattered seven hits, struck out five, walked three and aided her own cause with a two-run double and a run-scoring single, leading the Wildcats (6-3) to a 5-2 victory over Lowell.
"It was a good game, I'll take it any day," said Jankowski, who struggled with some early stiffness in her back, but still managed to go 3-for-4 and pick up her first win this season.
"I threw decent, but I didn't really feel great, physically. I had to stretch out a lot before the game -- especially with it being this cold -- but my stuff was breaking."
Unlike Fletcher, Jankowski's teammates played well behind her.
"There were quite a few key plays," she said.
Tiffany Gibson made an impressive catch in center field on a long drive by Lowell's Lauren Smith in the top of the fourth inning, while shortstop Morgan Austgen turned a key double play in the fifth after Fletcher singled to start the frame.
"We just hadn't played good defense this season, but today, they played it, and you have to be happy about that," Hanover Central coach Larry McMillen said. "If they can continue to do that, they'll win a lot more games this season. We're also starting to hit the ball better at the bottom of the order, which is good to see."
The game was tied at 2 entering the bottom of the fourth, but Jankowski cracked a two-run double, giving the Wildcats the lead for good.
"My hitting helped a lot, I felt pretty good," she said.
Iussig said he talked to his players about making some adjustments at the plate when Jankowski started throwing the ball low and outside to right-handed hitters after the first inning.
Lowell took a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat after Megan Bolanowski doubled in Lauren Wells, who led off with a double.
"We told them to try and go with the pitch and hit it to right field, but we didn't do a very good job of doing that, either," Iussig said.
"We need to pick it up. Playing like this for Lowell is totally unacceptable. There just doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency with some of the girls.
"They have to play better. People aren't just going to rollover when they see the name Lowell on the uniform any more."

Christner, Andrew are extra special High School Sports April 18, 2010BY STEVE MILLAR, Correspondent
Font Size Email Bookmark Black Text White TextKelly Christner and her Andrew teammates spent a lot of time Saturday waiting for someone to come up with a big hit and break a 1-1 tie with Tinley Park.
The Thunderbolts finally broke through in the 10th inning as Christner singled home the game-winning run to give the hosts a 2-1 win over their crosstown rival.
"I was wondering when someone was going to score," Christner said. "We had some chances and then we went 1-2-3 a lot of times, so it was hard. I know some of the girls on Tinley Park and it's always fun to play them. We can brag now."
Angela Bartucci was hit by a pitch leading off the 10th. She stole second and moved to third on a single by Sarah Benak (2-for-4). Christner, a freshman outfielder, followed with a long drive that one-hopped the wall in right field, easily scoring Bartucci to give the T-bolts (9-3) the victory.
After going 0-for-3 with a walk in her first four plate appearances, Christner credited her older sister, Katie, for helping her make a key adjustment. Katie follows Kelly in Andrew's batting order and has a good view of her at-bats from the on-deck circle.
"My sister was telling me I was pulling my hip out on all my other at-bats," Kelly said. "I just focused on that. My sister helps me a lot."
Andrew starting pitcher Brooke Hofer worked all 10 innings, scattering nine hits and striking out six to improve to 3-3.
"Brooke threw well and got out of some jams," Andrew coach Jim Holba said. "She put the ball where she needed to and made them really earn anything they did on offense."
Staci Bonezek (2-for-5) hit a towering solo home run in the top of the first for Tinley Park (8-6).
Andrew countered in the bottom of the inning as Julie Love singled home Katie Christner (fielder's choice).
Both defenses then took over from there.
Andrew missed a golden opportunity to win in the bottom of the seventh when Brooke McDermott (2-for-4), who had doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, was thrown out at the plate on a groundball to Bonezek at shortstop.
Tinley Park's Kayla Blume (2-for-4) drove a one-out double into the right-center gap in the top of the seventh, but she was gunned down trying to stretch it into a triple by second baseman Kelly McGrail.
"I blew it," Tinley Park coach Wendy Podleisnak said. "I should have never sent her. I got greedy.
"It was a great performance from both teams. Our outfield did a great job on defense."
Stacey Pickrum allowed two runs on eight hits over 10 innings for Tinley Park.

Glenbard South guesses right at right time By Joshua Welge | Daily Herald StaffContact writerPublished: 4/24/2010 10:36 PMSend To:
E-mail: To: From:
Name: E-mail: Comments:
(0) | read | postBuzz up! If Jenny Wittenberg jumped on Kendall Ryndak's first pitch like she knew what was coming, there's good reason.
"She's my travel team pitcher - that might be part of it," Wittenberg said with a smile. "I've been hitting inside off the handle. I knew if the pitch came inside I just had to turn on it."
Wittenberg drilled a two-out, 2-run double in the top of the eighth, giving No. 4 Glenbard South a 4-2 win over Downers Grove North on Saturday at Doerhoefer Park.
Glenbard South (16-1), which lost for the first time on Friday at Benet, got its winning rally going with two out in the eighth.
Brianna Meath singled and Amanda Fazzari drew a walk, bringing up Wittenberg. The Raiders junior hit Ryndak's first pitch over the Downers Grove North left-fielder, bringing in the go-ahead runs.
Right girl at the plate, right time.
"She came through in the clutch," Raiders coach Julie Fonda said, "like we've been counting on her all year to do. She works so hard at hitting. After the Sycamore game (a 2-0 win Thursday) she stayed and hit for about an hour with her dad after the game, and she was 2-for-3 that game. It's like 'really?' She's that type of kid."
Jess Wilkes (11-0) retired Downers Grove North in order in the bottom half of the eighth. After giving up single runs in the first and second innings, and 6 hits over the first three innings, Wilkes allowed just 2 baserunners the rest of the way.
She struck out five, shaking off a sprained ankle suffered when Wilkes fell on the wet dirt on her run-scoring squeeze bunt in the third.
"I've been saying it all year - she's like ice out there," Fonda said. "Nothing rattles her. She's got ice in her veins."
Downers Grove North (13-5), which lost for the second time in three games after an 11-game win streak, nearly won it in the bottom of the seventh. Carolyn Nojiri singled with one out and was sacrificed to second. Katie Hunzinger was then thrown out in a close play at first.
The Trojans grabbed a 2-0 lead after two innings as rain fell. Ryndak doubled in a run in the first, and a bloop single by Nojiri scored Brittany Nagy in the second.
Wilkes squeezed to score Wittenberg in the third and a Wittenberg RBI groundout scored Meath in the fifth.
Glenbard South left two runners on in the sixth and the bases loaded in the seventh.
"Yesterday's game is done with," Wittenberg said. "Hopefully we can get another streak going."
A banged-up Trojans team played well without leadoff hitter Rachel Bradley (mononucleosis), their center fielder with a broken finger and standout freshman pitcher Elaine Heflin, who hurt her oblique Thursday.
"We made a couple mental mistakes," Trojans coach Mark Magro said, "but I couldn't be more proud of them the way we're playing with injuries. We got a great 1-2 punch on the mound with Heflin and Kendall.
"We've won 12 out of 14. I'll take that any time."

Naperville Central is the latest team to find out this fact first-hand - don't sleep on the Naperville North Huskies.
Huskies pitcher Emily Dieckmann doubled in the game's lone run, then worked out of a seventh-inning jam to preserve a 1-0 win on Monday.
No. 20 Naperville North (11-7, 3-0 DuPage Valley Conference), now the only team yet unbeaten in the DVC, has won 9 of its last 11 games. On the Huskies' hit list have been Downers Grove South, Benet, Neuqua Valley, Glenbard North and their crosstown rival Redhawks - all teams ranked this season.
"This team is starting to come together," Huskies coach Jerry Kedziora said. "We're getting big hits and we're playing good defense. We're not beating ourselves, which has happened in the past many times."
Dieckmann allowed just two baserunners to reach second over the first six innings, but gave up a single to Juliet Tassi leading off the top of the seventh. Jill Andreoni bunted, and a high throw to first sailed into foul territory, putting runners on second and third with nobody out.
But Huskies center fielder Caitlyn Warren made a shoestring catch on a short flyball by Nicole Kappelman, the runners holding, and Dieckmann induced a pair of harmless pop-ups to end it.
"It was a little nerve-wracking," Dieckmann said. "I just had to calm down and trust my defense."
Naperville Central coach Andy Nussbaum was kicking himself afterward for holding Tassi at third on the errant throw.
"I take responsibility for not scoring in the seventh," Nussbaum said. "I should have been more aggressive. We could have scored on the bunt. The ball was still in play and with nobody out I was a little conservative."
Dieckmann (5-3), also the winning pitcher against Downers Grove South and Benet, struck out four and scattered 5 hits.
"Big home game," Kedziora said, "and she came through. She hit her spots and shut down a team that can put up a lot of runs."
Scoreless through three innings, Warren started the Huskies fourth by cuing a single just over the outstretched glove of Redhawks first baseman Megan Silke. Up stepped Dieckmann, who smoked a double to the gap in left-center to score Warren after Naperville Central couldn't gather in a popped bunt attempt.
"I was lucky that they didn't catch that," Dieckmann said, "and then she came in and the pitch was up and right over the plate. I just got ahold of it."
Silke was 2-for-3 and Alyssa Wunderlich (8-4) struck out five for Naperville Central (11-7, 3-0). Sammy Marshall had 2 singles and 2 stolen bases for Naperville North, giving the leadoff hitter 22 steals on the season.
Naperville North can match its DVC win total of a year ago by beating Glenbard East on Wednesday.
"3-0 right now, and it's been a few years since we've been there," Kedziora said. "I'm totally excited we're now in control of our destiny. Beating Naperville Central and Glenbard North, teams that have been on top the last couple years, just gives us more confidence."

Chicago Christian 5 St. Edward 5
An insufficient amount of daylight brought last week’s Suburban Christian Conference clash between the Lady Knights and Wave to a halt before a winner could be decided. The game, which is slated to be resumed at a later date, was called after 12 innings.
Lindsey Norway went the entire way for Chicago Christian, facing 48 batters in all. Ten of those hitters struck out. Norway surrendered eight hits.
She also helped the Lady Knights on the offensive end by going 3-for-5 with two runs. Becky DeRuiter added a hit and scored twice.
Chicago Christian 6 Rosary 3
Norway was again on the mound, and her three-hit, fourstrikeout performance helped the Lady Knights bag a win.
Bianca Gutierrez supported Norway with two hits, one RBI and one run. Norway (two hits, one RBI, one run) and DeRuiter (two hits, one run) also swung good bats.
“Lindsey Norway has been doing a great job for us on the mound,” Christian coach Heather Roozeboom said. “It has [also] been exciting to see the newcomers getting on base and the veterans getting them in when we need them to.
“This team has an attitude of perseverance and determination. I’m looking forward to what the rest of the season holds for us and what other obstacles this team will be able to overcome.”
Nazareth Academy 3 - 0 Chicago Christian 2 - 3
Norway tossed a two-hitter and also knocked in two runs to help the Lady Knights gain a split on Saturday. Norway struck out four Lady Roadrunners and poked a double on offense.
Megan Glynn had a hit and tallied once for Christian.
The opener tipped Nazareth’s way despite good outings from Norway (one hit, one run; three strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings), Paige Engbers (one hit, one RBI) and DeRuiter (two-hitter over 5 2/3 innings).
Guerin 2 Chicago Christian 1
Gutierrez’s RBI double in the third provided the Lady Knights with their only run this past Monday, and that wasn’t enough to lift Christian past the Lady Gators.
DeRuiter took the pitching loss, although she carried a one-hitter into the sixth inning. Back-to-back doubles gave Guerin the go-ahead run, but DeRuiter still finished with a three-hitter and four strikeouts and was praised for “a great outing” by Roozeboom.
