Streator downs Morris in NCIC softball By MIKE CUNNIFF - mcunniff@morrisdailyherald.com Comments (No comments posted) E-mail this story Print this story Comments ShareBashing out 16 hits, the Streator Lady Bulldogs rolled by the Morris Lady Redskins 15-4 in NCIC softball at the MCHS diamond Thursday afternoon.
"We played fairly well," Streator coach Kelly Coons said. "It was nice that we got some strong hitting right from the start."
Right from the start in that Lady Bulldogs leadoff batter Payton Billups rifled the first pitch she saw down the third base line for a triple.
"That gave us a nice spark," Coons said. "Getting a runner on third base that quick puts the other team down and gives your team momentum. That leadoff triple was huge for us. It seemed like we got more aggressive with our bats after that."
Lindsay Schmitz followed Billups with an RBI single. Allie Riordan added a bad-hop single by short before cleanup batter Sam Riss walked to fill the bases. Liz Liptak then grounded into a 1-2-3 double play before a grounder to short ended the inning.
Streator made it 3-0 behind a 2-run homer over the center field fence by No. 9 hitter Katie Martin in the second. It was Martin's first home run of the season. Lefty Teesha Benson came on in relief of starter Brittany Benson (0-2) with two outs in the frame.
The Lady Bulldogs, now 4-1 in the conference and 12-3 on the season, sent eight batters to the plate against Teesha Benson while scoring 6 times. Streator designated player Murphy Armstrong laced a 2-run single to single before Martin added a 2-run single to right. Martin wound up swiping home on a back end of a double steal before Riordan greeted Lady Redskin reliever Hilary Bunting with an RBI single up the middle to make it 9-0.
Morris, which falls to 1-3 in the NCIC and 4-9 on the season, chipped away at its deficit by pushing across a trio of runs in its turn. Designated player Liz Dergo beat out a single to short before Bunting did likewise. Taylor Severson walked to fill the bases. Monica Belt had an RBI single before Layney Miller drove in a pair with a single by third.
"They played really well," Miller said of the Lady Bulldogs. "Their hitting was very good. Every single person could put the ball in play."
The Lady Redskins crawled within 9-4 with a solitary run in the fourth when pinch hitter Kayla Conrod singled to right before being replaced by pinch runner Lauren Busdicker, who ultimately scored on a 5-3 ground out by Bunting.
Streator added 4 runs in the fifth on a 3-run homer by Schmitz (her third of the campaign) plus a sacrifice fly by Brynn Johnson (to plate Riordan). The Lady Bulldogs closed it out with a pair of runs in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Janelle Washko plus a throwing error. It was the fifth error of the contest.
Billups and Schmitz had 3 hits each for the visitors. The Lady Redskins ended with 7 hits by 7 different players.
"Their hitting was outstanding," Morris coach Amy Barr said. "They could all hit, from the top of the lineup through the bottom. They were very impressive. We kept falling behind (in the count) and if we didn't hit the spot, they hit it. It seemed like a lot of their hitters were up 2-0 or 3-1 and then you know we have to come in with a strike. That fact certainly helped their hitters. No disrespect to Streator. You don't get to be 3-1 in the conference and 11-3 by being a bad team."
The Lady Redskins will now host Geneseo for an NCIC doubleheader on Saturday.

Softball: Verdun, Coal City dominate at Kankakee 04/22/2010, 10:08 am Comment on this story
The Daily Journal staff report
The Coal City High School softball team has a tendency to make people look silly once in a while.
The unbeaten Coalers did just that Wednesday, downing host Kankakee 14-4 in a nonconference game in which the Kays committed nine errors.
"We hoped we would have came out and given them a better game," Kankakee coach Deb Johnston said. "But we did not execute defensively. It just kind of snowballed on us."
Kirsten Verdun was dominating both at bat and in the circle. She finished 4 for 5 with five RBIs and recorded five strikeouts, allowing no hits in a three-inning pitching stint.
Teammate Krista Watson had four hits, including a home run, for Coal City (16-0). Bryanna Phelan added a three-hit performance.
Allie Vadeboncouer drove in three runs for Kankakee (13-6).
Bishop McNamara 10, St. Joseph 5
WESTCHESTER -- Erika Tatum hit a grand slam to highlight Bishop McNamara's 11th win in 12 games.
Josie Dexter had two hits, two runs and two RBIs, while senior Katie Menard added two hits.
Alexa Salkeld (4-2) struck out two and walked none in the win.

Naperville Central didn't forget to pack its bats when it traveled to Wheaton Warrenville South on Wednesday.
The Redhawks pounded out 11 hits and cruised to a 9-2 DuPage Valley conference win over the Tigers (12-7, 1-1). Four players had two hits each while the Tigers defense committed four costly errors.
"We really had to be intense and come out strong since they just won 9-1 (over Glenbard East) on Monday," Naperville Central left fielder Meghan Griffin said. "We really had to play tight."
Griffin led the hitting barrage, going 2-for-4, including a double and a two-run single during a three-run fifth inning that broke a 2-2 tie. The Redhawks (8-6, 2-0) broke the game open against senior pitcher Julianne LaFleur (7-6) with three more runs in the sixth.

After the Redhawks scored one run in the first and another in the second the Tigers finally got to lefty pitcher Kristina Vizza (2-3). A sacrifice fly by Kristy Santora scored Ohio University-bound Timmie Rappe (2-for-3, RBI) in the third. The slick-fielding Raiders made play after play behind winning pitcher Jess Wilkes in Saturday morning's 9-2 nonconference victory against St. Francis in Glen Ellyn.
"Our infield is the best," Raiders catcher Jackie Wrona said. "I am 100 percent confident if it stays on the ground, they're going to get it."
"All of them do a great job," Raiders coach Julie Fonda added. "(Amanda) Fazzari at third, Tess (DiIorio at first base) made a nice play today. (Brianna Meath at second base) jammed her thumb and Madeline (Peterson) comes in and gets the first ball hit to her. I can't complain about them. They do a great job. There's a lot of confidence. Wilkes knows if she pitches a groundball it's probably going to be an out."
Glenbard South (20-2) got off to a great start, scoring 5 times in the bottom of the first inning.
"It gives Wilkes a lot of confidence, it gives us a lot of confidence, and it puts their backs up against the wall," Fonda said. "It was nice to see."
"The key to that inning was not making the play on the first hitter (Meath) on that line drive to center field," St. Francis coach Ralph Remus said. "If we get that out, I think it's a whole different inning. We keep their speed off the bases. In the fifth and sixth inning when we made plays on bunts to start the inning, if we don't make those plays those are big innings again."
Meath scored her second run of the game in the second inning to make it 6-0, and Hannah Davey scored in the third.
Meanwhile, Wilkes (14-1) kept the ball in the infield through the first 10 batters until St. Francis' Laura Behnke broke up the perfect game by coaxing a one-out walk out of a full count in the fourth inning. Brie Pasquale followed with a clean two-strike single to end the no-hitter, and Paige Davis drove in both Behnke and Pasquale with a double to left field that one-hopped the fence.
"They made every play in the field they had to make," Remus said. "The 2 runs we got, we earned them. We hit the ball hard. It just wasn't enough."
Wilkes got the Spartans (15-7) to hit at the Raiders' fielders again, and that was the end of the Spartans' threat.
"She was pitching great," Raiders catcher Jackie Wrona said. "She's amazing at hitting her spots. Her (screwball) is just phenomenal."
The Raiders responded to St. Francis' 2-run outburst by getting those runs back in the bottom of the fourth when Wrona doubled to left to drive in Maddie Glab and Jane Trzaska. Wrona finished with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI.
"The past few days I was ahead of the ball and I went and did some extra practice and I just came out ripping," Wrona said. "It was awesome."
