Dexter's trifecta
LISLE -- Josie Dexter had a pretty good day, and it helped the Bishop McNamara Catholic High School softball team have an even better one.
The Fightin' Irish traveled to Benet to take on the defending East Suburban Catholic Conference champion and came away with a stunning doubleheader sweep, topping the host Redwings with 6-5 and 4-3 victories.
Dexter went 6 for 8 on the day with three home runs to lead the Fightin' Irish, who have won six straight games, including four straight in conference play.
"These were the biggest wins of the year for us," McNamara coach Ray Schmidt said. "Our hitting and pitching are looking tremendous right now."

Sandburg 6, Morris 2
ORLAND PARK — Monica Belt went 2-for-3 with a run Saturday to lead the Redskins (4-8) at the plate. They had Layney Miller go 1-for-2 with a run and a stolen base and also reach base by being hit by a pitch, Tori Hanford go 1-for-3 with an RBI and Michelle Cordrey and Liz Dergo also go 1-for-3.
"We actually played 1 of our better games," Morris coach Amy Barr said. "Sandburg is ranked in the state, and we came out and played like we had nothing to lose. I am really pleased with how the girls played today."
Losing pitcher Hilary Bunting worked 6 innings. She gave up the 6 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits, walked 1 and struck out 2.

BOND LEADS SOFTBALL PAST LWE FRANKFORT -- Teamwork and hard work. In her past five games as the designated hitter or the fourth outfielder, Lockport junior Jenn Bond has been living proof of how important those intangibles truly are or, at the very least, can be.
Teamwork. In the top of the third inning, after senior outfielder Sara Daley beat out an infield hit off the pitcher's mound, Bond delivered better than special agent 007 with a beautiful squeeze bunt for an RBI single and a quick 6-0 lead.

Hard work. With two outs in the top of the fourth, Bond blasted a 2-run homer down the left-field line that dipped inches inside the foul pole on a 3-2 count -- handing the Porters a whopping 11-0 lead by wonderfully putting her priorities in place.
First we. Then me.
"The squeeze bunt," a beaming Bond nodded, about which was more nerve-racking. "It was more, 'I have to get the runner home' instead of 'It's just my at-bat.' I had to protect my runner, and it was probably my best day at the plate."
Bond drives were popular during World War II. Bond's drive proved to be the best of Lockport's blazing afternoon at the plate Friday as the Porters steamrolled to a 13-3 Southwest Suburban Blue softball victory over host Lincoln-Way East.
Finishing a triple short of the cycle, Bond went 3-for-4 with 2 runs, a double and 4 RBIs to pace red-hot Lockport (15-5, 5-1). The Porters pounded out 16 hits in support of junior pitcher Amanda Oberc (6-2), who struck out 3 in a 4-hitter.
Also in the 6-inning affair, junior catcher Lia Romeo went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Evansville-bound senior second baseman Kacey Rogers smacked a 3-run homer for a 4-0 lead in the first inning, added a sacrifice and ended up with 4 RBIs.
For Bond, it was her first high school home run -- varsity or otherwise. It was Rogers' first homer of the spring. Serving basically as the DH for Oberc, Bond became the tie that binds as the 6-7-8-9 hitters went 9-for-15 with 3 doubles.
But how about that bunt?
"Yes, yes, yes," Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec said, smiling. "We need to know in a live situation if she could put that down, and she got the job done. She's stepping up for us. In the last five games, she has been executing at the plate and hitting the snot out of the ball."
"It's so good, so good, to see Jenn get those hits because she works so hard all of the time," said Romeo, who smashed 3 singles in consecutive at-bats. "It's good to see her bat come around like that, and we hit up and down the lineup."
To wit, senior first baseman Amanda Reid (2 doubles), junior outfielder Sam DeMasi (run, RBI) and Daley (3 runs, double) each totaled 2 hits. Senior Crystal Witek contributed a pinch-hit single and scored twice as a courtesy runner.
The Lockport list goes on like the Oscars. Senior shortstop Amanda Stanton, the Eastern Michigan recruit, doubled, sacrificed and scored. Lewis-bound senior third baseman Jessica Rourke singled, sacrificed, walked and scored 2 runs.
Don't let up. Ever.
"That's one thing we've talked to the girls about," Chovanec said. "With the mound at 43 feet, I think the game is not over until that last out and anything can happen. Momentum can shift in a lot ways and the game is more offensive, so I was pleased how we kept putting the ball in play."
"Especially the bottom of our lineup," Romeo said. "It was one through nine, everyone was hitting, and it's good for a team to have that kind of balance. Even our subs came in like Crystal off the bench getting a hit. Everyone was really hitting."
Amazingly, Lincoln-Way East (15-4, 4-2) produced an economical 3 runs on 4 hits, with junior first baseman Lisa Holcomb's sharp ground single to center in the first being the Griffins' lone hit entering the fourth. Five errors, though, helped Lockport move ahead 11-zip.
Celebrate youth. Junior DH Aubrey DeGroot drilled a solo homer to straightaway center in the fourth, while sophomore outfielder Bri Morel followed with an RBI double to left and junior outfielder Jill Reid sliced an RBI single to left in the fifth.
That made it 11-3, giving the Griffins a good grade in the character department.
"I guess that is the positive for us in this game," East coach Katie Blackmore said. "We had certain kids step up who didn't want to go out that way. They turned it up and got us a couple of runs on the board.
"Obviously, we did not play to our potential in the first part of the game, but I can't say that we played to our potential in the second half of the game. All in all, it was a poor performance."
On the flip side, Lockport came out with a pour-it-on performance in the first inning vs. Saint Louis-bound ace Cait Santefort (7-4). Stanton blooped a double to right-center and scored on Romeo's RBI single through short before Rogers homered to left for the 4-0 edge.
"It felt really good," Rogers said. "Having that lead allowed us to relax. Once we relax, we seem to do better as a team and we hit pretty well. Our hitting was contagious today and it went pretty good for us after that."
After East effectively erased the 10-run mercy rule, Lockport reestablished it in the sixth as Daley doubled to left-center and Bond slammed a RBI double off the left-center fence. She scored on an error -- more sure of that than her homer.
"I didn't know," Bond said. "I just thought it was going to hit the fence or it was going to be in, so I kept running. When I saw Coach Chovanec with her hands up, that's when I knew. It's my first-ever over the fence and I was very, very happy."
And very deservedly so.

Downers Grove North knocks off Downers Grove South by Rob ValentinMay 05, 2010 | 19 views | 0 | 1 | | Downers Grove North had a productive week going 4-0 last week while knocking off rival Downers Grove South.
The Trojans (18-5, 6-1) started the week with a 2-0 victory over South in the annual crosstown clash Tuesday, April 27.
Kendall Ryndak was phenomenal on the mound giving up just four hits to the potent Mustangs while striking out six batters.
Carolyn Nojiri pushed the first run across in the fifth inning with a two-out single. In the sixth, Katie Hunzinger reached base with a double and later scored. Sarah Anderson and Brittany Nagy had solid games on defense.
North continued rolling with a 10-0 victory over Proviso West the very next day.
Last weekend, the Trojans crushed Addison Trail 12-1, and 15-2 in a doubleheader.
Ryndak picked up the win in both games, improving to 8-3 on the year. Nagy led the offense with a homer.
North carried its momentum into this week as they knocked off Hinsdale Central 5-0 in a West Suburban Silver matchup.
Ryndak, who has been carrying a large majority of the pitching load due to an injury to freshman pitcher Elaine Heflin, was fantastic on the mound once again tossing a complete game two-hit shutout.

St. Francis keeps Montini within reach in SCC Blue By Joshua Welge | Daily Herald StaffContact writerPublished: 5/5/2010 11:26 PMSend To:

(0) | read | postBuzz up! St. Francis isn't handing over its conference championship without putting its two cents in first.
Emily Karpinski homered to back Taylor Ronchetto's strong pitching, and the Spartans beat Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division leader Montini 5-1 on Wednesday in Wheaton.
Defending Suburban Catholic Conference champ St. Francis (17-9, 8-4) pulled into a tie with Marian Central a game behind Montini (12-14, 9-3) with four conference games left. Rosary is two games off the pace.
"We needed to win this game," Karpinski said. "We hit our rough patch during the season, but we're picking up momentum toward the end."
St. Francis has enjoyed a strong bounce-back week. On Monday the Spartans hammered Immaculate Conception 10-1, snapping the Knights' 11-game winning streak.
"We had a tough week last week; we ended the week with three losses," Spartans coach Ralph Remus said, "and we really did not play well. Monday we started what we call our second season. They were awesome on Monday and they were awesome today."
St. Francis grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, with only one hit. Two hit batters, a walk and an error led to the first run. Karpinski singled in Blaine Carragher to make it 2-0 and a third scored on Kelcey Fabianski's RBI groundout.
"We weren't ready to play in the first inning," Montini coach Richie Costante said, "and I'll take all the blame for that. We rushed over here, construction and everything and we weren't ready to play."
Bri Pasquale singled to start the St. Francis third, and Karpinski drilled an 0-1 offering over the fence in right-center to push the lead to 5-0.
Ronchetto, who lost to Montini 6-4 exactly a month prior to Wednesday, was far stingier the second time around. She allowed just 2 hits, giving up Montini's only run in the fourth. Ronchetto worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in that inning with back-to-back strikeouts, and finished with 7 punchouts.
"My coach had me work on my changeup because I've been really struggling. I threw, like, 12 changeups last game and didn't throw one for a strike," Ronchetto said. "I worked on it a lot yesterday and it helped out. Their two big hitters (Lara) Mangialardi and (Tori) Shipbaugh, they're the ones that hurt me last game (with homers). I tried to keep it out of the zone against them."
St. Francis committed one error behind her, and that was erased when Spartans catcher Carragher picked off the runner at first.
"We made plays, we got clutch hits," Remus said, "and we told the girls that's what we expect out of them. We expect a lot out of them because they're talented."
Kaitlin Maggiore doubled leading off the Montini fourth and scored the Broncos' lone run on a Tracy Bonnacorsi single. Montini plays at Rosary today.
"First game Taylor was belt high, and we hit her," Costante said. "This game she kept her pitches low. She pitched a great game. She hit all of her spots."

Lockport upsets No.1 Sandburg May 6, 2010 BY RANDY WHALEN
Font Size Print Email En Espanol Bookmark Black Text White TextLockport pitcher Kelly Bowler wasn't about to let it happen.
With her team on the verge of losing an eight-run lead against top-ranked Sandburg, Bowler bared down in the bottom of the seventh and retired the side in order as the Porters held on for an 8-7 win in a SouthWest Suburban Blue showdown Thursday afternoon in Orland Park.
It ended a 23-game winning streak for Sandburg (26-2, 6-1) and the Porters (16-5, 6-1) have won eight straight since a loss to the Eagles.
"Coach (Marissa) Chovanec always tells me to know when to bottle it and when to unbottle it," Bowler said. "She wasn't here, but I unbottled it at the end."
Chovanec, was attending a family wedding in Tennessee, missed a crazy game that saw the Porters jump out to an 8-0 lead in the fourth and then hang on for dear life as Sandburg scored five runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.
"It feels good," Bowler said. "It was crazy, you could hear all the fans yelling and I don't think I've ever been in a game like this."
Bowler started the game but left with one out in the fifth after giving up five runs on five hits. Fellow junior right hander Amanda Oberic then got out of the inning. But with one out in the sixth, Nicole Richards (2-for-4) ripped a solo home run to right and Kelly Sheridan (2-for-3) doubled to deep left off Lockport sophomore lefty Taylor Weissenhofer.
Bowler (8-3) reentered and, after a sacrifice, gave up an RBI double to left center by Emma Jarrell (2-for-3, two RBI). Bowler walked slugger Lexi Bryant intentionally and Jessica Perkins (2-for-4) followed with an infield single to load the bases. Then Morgan Biel blooped a ball to right. But Biel's bid for the go-ahead hit was robbed when Porter senior right fielder Sara Daley made a tumbling catch right before the ball hit the ground.
"I was so worried about missing it and I pretty much caught it with my bare hand," said Daley of the catch. "It hit my glove, but I really sandwiched it with my hand. Right before that, all us outfielders said that we were going to get any ball hit because it was do-or-die time. As a senior it's the best thing to beat Sandburg."
In the bottom of the seventh, Bowler threw 10 pitches. She got a three-pitch strikeout, an 0-2 tapper back to her and the game-ending strikeout on a 1-2 pitch.
"They scored late runs off me the last time," said Bowler, who gave up four runs in the 10th to Sandburg in a 5-1 10 inning loss on April 16. "I knew what I had to do and wasn't going to let it happen again."
Lockport scored three runs in the top of the third on a two-out, two run double by Jessica Rourke and an RBI single by Daley (2-for-3) chased Sandburg starter Brittany Gardner.
The Porters added five runs in the fourth off junior righty Lora Olson before an out was made. Amanda Stanton had an RBI fielders choice grounder, Audrey Mintari (2-for-3) mashed a two-run triple off the right field fence, Lia Romeo ripped an RBI double to left center and Rourke (2-for-3) riffled and RBI double to left center.
Gardner (11-2), a senior lefty, then came back in and kept the Porters at bay by allowing one hit and striking out eight in the final four innings.
"Brittany came back in and did a great job," Sandburg coach Jim Fabianski said. "Her and Lexi (Bryant) made adjustments on the batters.
Still Lockport did a great job hitting the ball. We had been giving up an average of 1.3 runs per game, so it's a bit of a wakeup call and kind of humbling.
"Still I knew we had the intestinal fortitude to come back."
The Eagles, who finished with 12 hits, nearly did with five in the fifth. Amanda Grigsby had an RBI single, Jarrell and RBI single, Bryant bashed a two-run double off the left field fence and Biel got a two out single to make it 8-5.
Sam DeMasi added two hits for Lockport, which finished with 13 hits.
"This was a really exciting game," Rourke said. "The whole game we were cheering our heads off and I won't have a voice later. But we were making plays when we needed to and got the win."
