Lady Irish Start Postseason Run Impressively Clifton Central ace Samantha Payne was overwhelmed by the Lady Irish, allowing 17 Runs and 18 Hits in her 4 innings of work. Although the Irish did not get a Home Run in the contest, they banged 4 balls off the fence against a stiff wind, ending up with 8 doubles for the day. Belinda Schaafsma pitched all 5 innings, giving up a meaningless 2 run Homer in the last inning, that accounted for the Lady Comets only runs. Belinda is now 14-4 on the season, and she added 4 strike outs to her season total. Offensively, Erika Tatum was 3-4, with 2 doubles and 5 RBI's. Josie Dexter was 2-4 with 3 RBI's, Aly Hana was 2-2 with a walk, sac., and 3 Runs scored. Belinda was 2-4, with 2 doubles, Katie Menard 2-2, and Emily Olszewski 2-2. Also, Melissa LaReau drove in 3 with her bases loaded double in the 1st inning. The Ladies now await the winner of the Momence/Watseka game.

Game Summary: KNIGHTS 5 Mt. Assisi 0 Knights Softball Shuts Out Mt. Assisi The Knights played solid defense on the field with Lindsey Norway on the mound today. Lindsey pitched a phenomenal game, walking none, allowing only 1 hit and striking out 5.
The most exciting part of the game occurred in the 3rd inning. Lindsey Norway started it off with a triple. Bianca Gutierrez hit a hard ground ball back at the pitcher who did a fake throw to first and caught Lindsey a little to far off the bag and got her out. Paige Engbers followed with a high bouncing ball up the middle. The short stop snagged the ball but was not able to get a sliding Bianca out at second base. Megan Glynn then proceeded to get a walk. Although she battled well, Ashley Quinlan was unable to advance the runners. Then Becky DeRuiter, with two outs and bases loaded, hit a home run to right center scoring all 3 runners. In the 6th inning, Paige Engbers was able to get Mary Kate Venhuizen in from 3rd base with a long sacrifice fly out to center.
Lindsey Norway pitched a great game with the help of some great defensive plays behind her. The Knights look to win again as they face Argo on Friday and Marian Central Catholic on Saturday.

Morris wins Strike Out Cancer game against Minooka By T.G. Smith - tsmith@morrisdailyherald.com Comments (No comments posted) The Morris softball team celebrates after defeating Minooka at home on Friday. (Scott Belt Photo) E-mail this story Print this story Comments ShareThe Morris softball team should invite the family of the late Mark Staehely and the Minooka Indians to town more often.
On a day at the Morris High School field which was filled with activities to benefit the Staehely Pediatric Cancer Foundation, the Redskins came out and used the spirit of the day to record an 8-0 victory over their neighboring rival.
"We've been planning on this game for months and since the game was finally here, the stress was over and we got to play," Morris winning pitcher Hillary Bunting said. "I think it also helped that we were playing against Minooka, who is a rival for us. The seniors on the team wanted it. We wanted to beat them going out."
While the silent auction was ongoing throughout the game, the Morris dominance on the softball field on the day was the same. The Redskins scored twice in the first inning when Bunting doubled and scored when Alex Granger reached on an error and one out later, Granger scored on an RBI double by Layney Miller.
"The girls were really into the game," Morris coach Amy Barr said. "They've been ready to play it since we first started planning for it in August."
The game stayed at 2-0 for the next three innings before Monica Belt smacked her third home run of the season off of relief pitcher Hayley Schneider to make it 3-0.
"It was an inside pitch," Belt said. "I've been working on hitting the inside pitch in practice."
And did she know it was gone from the time it left her bat?
"Oh yeah," she said.
In the sixth Morris nearly won the game by the run rule scoring four more times. Liz Dergo singled, Bunting singled and Granger walked to load the bases before Belt hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Miller followed by reaching on an error before Taylor Severson tripled in Granger and Miller. Tori Hanford got Severson home with a ground out to account for the final runs of the contest.
"This is definitely not the kind of game we're used to playing. We didn't show we have a great team today," Minooka coach Amy Saelens said. "It was just not our game. Not hitting, pitching or defense."
Offensively, Minooka managed just 4 hits off of Bunting. Lindsey Fenner had a hit in the first, Lauren Zembruski and Kassie Marsala singled in the fifth and Andrea Carlson doubled in the fourth. On the other side of the field, Morris had 14 hits against losing pitcher Kristi Lenz and relief pitcher Schneider. Bunting was 3-for-5, Severson was 3-for-3, Dergo was 3-for-4 and Miller 2-for-3 in the game.
"I was very impressed with the way the team came out and played today," Barr said.
Morris is now 8-15 on the season, Minooka is 18-9.

Font Size Print Email En Espanol Bookmark Black Text White TextHost Lockport beat the rain, and eventually Lincoln-Way East 8-7 on Thursday in a must-win SouthWest Suburban Blue contest.
The Porters (24-7, 11-1) didn’t beat Sandburg for the conference title. But they did what they could do — force a tie.
RELATED STORIES Photos: Lockport vs. Lincoln-Way East Sandburg and Lockport split two conference games this season, the only losses for either team in league play.
Lockport’s win Thursday was arduous, to be sure.
With a steady rain falling from start to finish, the Porters raced to a 5-1 early lead — the big blow, a three-run home run by Kacey Rogers — only to have Lincoln-Way East (21-7, 7-5) chip away and go in front 6-5 on a two-run blast by Griffins pitcher Kacyee Hart in the top of the fifth.
Back-to-back doubles by Rogers and Sara Daley off of Hart in the bottom of the fifth retied the game, but Lincoln-Way East went back on top 7-6 in the top of the sixth on a one-out RBI single by Aubrey DeGroot.
Hart (five-hitter, six strikeouts) pitched out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth but wasn’t as fortunate in the seventh.
Jessica Rourke singled to lead off the inning, and Rogers walked. After Daley sacrificed the runners to second and third, Amanda Reid tapped a grounder to shortstop Cheryl Sendzik. It was a close play at the plate, with a sliding Rourke being ruled safe.
“We were in a play where we were running no matter what,” Rourke said. “I was going on the hit. They (the coaches) said they thought I beat it, but I don’t know.”
The next batter, Jennifer Bond, hit a duplicate tapper to Sendzik. This time, it wasn’t close, as the throw home was wide right. The two runs made a winner of starting — and relief — pitcher Kelly Bowler, who came out in favor of lefty Taylor Weissenhofer with one out in the fourth only to go back in with two outs in the fifth.
It was, without question, a wild ride to a conference co-championship.
“Hey, that’s what makes it fun, battling back and forth,” Rourke said. “This is the kind of game you want to win. We handled it well, and it feels awesome.”

Naperville Central wins, but West Chicago takes title By Joshua Welge | Daily Herald StaffContact writerPublished: 5/20/2010 11:09 PMSend To:
E-mail: To: From:
Name: E-mail: Comments:
(0) | read | postBuzz up! A hit here or an out there and Andy Nussbaum figured his Naperville Central Redhawks are the ones playing for a conference championship Thursday.
Spoiling it for Glenbard North had to suffice.
The Redhawks scored 3 fourth-inning runs and Kristina Vizza struck out 11 in a 3-2 win over Glenbard North in Carol Stream.
The loss for Glenbard North (20-8, 9-5 DuPage Valley Conference) gives West Chicago (24-9, 10-4) its second outright DVC championship in three years.
"We were one game short of beating every team," said Nussbaum, whose team lost twice to West Chicago, "and if we had beaten every team we'd be conference champs. We played real well, we pitched real well and we finally scored some runs. That's a great win for us."
Glenbard North, which swept West Chicago in their two games, had two golden opportunities to share the conference go by the wayside. West Chicago lost to Wheaton Warrenville South last Friday and Naperville North on Wednesday. But Glenbard North dropped its last two conference games.
"It just seemed like something was missing," Glenbard North coach Josh Sanew said. "It's more or less a championship game today; I don't know how you can have anything missing.
"We gotta get them ready to go (for regionals) on Wednesday; hopefully we can get hot and make a run."
Naperville Central (19-15, 8-6) came in on a four-game losing streak, shut out in its last three. The Redhawks busted out in the fourth inning. Katie Walker and Megan Silke singled with one out, and both moved up on a pitch in the dirt. Alyssa Wunderlich then singled off the second baseman's glove into right, scoring both runners.
A wild pitch moved the runner to second and Jill Andreoni's grounder went under the second baseman's glove to score courtesy runner Abby Anaya for a 3-0 lead.
"When's the last time we got 3 hits in a row?" Nussbaum asked rhetorically. "Those were all huge hits. Our pitching is such that if we get 3 runs we should win."
Meanwhile, Vizza held Glenbard North's potent lineup scoreless until Alexis Simone's two-out RBI single in the fifth. An illegal pitch moved the runner to third, but Vizza struck out the next batter.
Vizza (5-6) got the first 2 of her strikeouts called on changeups and had the Panthers swinging through high heat.
"They're a really good hitting team and I came out knowing that," Vizza said. "I gave it my all. The changeup is my best pitch. I just go off of that."
Alyssa Jasinski's solo homer to center, her sixth of the year, pulled Glenbard North within a run with two out in the sixth. But Vizza set down the last four batters, three striking out.
Glenbard North was held to fewer than 4 runs for just the fifth time this season.
"We didn't put any pressure on them defensively by hitting the ball. They didn't really have to make any plays," Sanew said. "We had a lot of overswinging. We chased a lot of high pitches to help her out a little bit today. She threw a great game, but our approach at the plate just was not very good at all."

Glenbard South captures 30th victory By Joshua Welge | Daily Herald StaffContact writerPublished: 5/24/2010 10:48 PMSend To:

(0) | read | postBuzz up! Glenbard South's players never aspired to a 30-win regular season.
Watching them Monday, it's easy to see how they got there.
In their final tuneup to what they hope is a third straight trip to the state softball tournament, the No. 4 Raiders rocked No. 9 Lake Park 10-1 in Glen Ellyn.
Glenbard South (30-3) batted around in both the second and third innings, putting things out of reach early.
"It just shows that we can compete with a 4A team," said Glenbard South's Jenny Wittenberg, who went 3-for-3 and reached base four times. "Lake Park is a great team. We just hit the ball hard today."
Glenbard South's 30-win regular season is only the second time in school history it's been done, first since 2004.
"It's a huge milestone. It doesn't happen too often - that's for sure," said Raiders coach Julie Fonda. "It's a credit to the girls' perseverance. They just stick with it and continue to play."
The Raiders on Monday excelled at the "little things" that add up to big success. With Lake Park's infield corners playing up expecting a squeeze bunt with one out and a runner at third in the first, Wittenberg instead shot a single down the third-base line to score Brianna Meath. Lake Park tied it 1-1 in the second on an Alyssa Robison squeeze, but when Kelly Mieszala tried another bunt Raiders third baseman Amanda Fazzari faked a throw to first, wheeled around and threw to third to throw out the Lancers lead runner.
In the bottom of the second, Jenny Klich dropped down a perfect squeeze between the mound and first - on a full count - to score Tess DiIorio with the go-ahead run.
"It's softball IQ," Fonda said. "I'm blessed with great kids and great talent. We talk the talk, and they have to execute. They did today."
Klich admitted she thought there was only one strike prior to her bunt. It's all coming up gold in Glen Ellyn these days.
"Amanda told me when I got back in the dugout there were two strikes. I had no idea," Klich said. "Fonda does love to bunt, though."
Two more Glenbard South runs scored on a Lake Park throwing error. A recurring Lancers bugaboo - hitting with runners on base - plagued them Monday. Lake Park (25-9) left runners on second and third in the first inning and the bases loaded in the second.
Carly Willert and Samantha Becker did reach base twice for Lake Park, which opens Class 4A regional play today against Glenbard East.
"We're so close," Lake Park coach Tom Mazzie said, "we're just missing the knockout blow, which is what other teams are getting."
Meath reached base three times and scored 3 runs for Glenbard South. The Raiders' bottom two hitters Hannah Davey and Klich continued their torrid hitting, Davey going 2-for-3 with a double and 2 runs scored and Klich scoring 2 runs and driving in 2.
"I feel like they don't know any better," Fonda said. "Pitchers just lay it in there and they hit it. I'd love to keep them a secret. I guess they're not anymore."
