Even with monsoon downpours both Friday and Saturday night - we were able to complete the winners bracket of both the 10 and 12 under ASA National Qualifier due to the extraordinary efforts of Joe Caliendo and his Melrose Park staff and park district - thank you Joe and your team!!!!
At the 10's - the Downers Grove Outlaws defeated the White Sox.
At 12 U - the Northern Ice defeated the Naperville Diamonds.
At 14 U - Hawks Spring Team defeated Sparks Spring Team.
All were terrific games - great ball played all weekend!!!
At the 14 Northern National - where there is likely still water on the fields - the final two teams in the winners bracket will battle this Thursday to claim the prize - with the Sparks taking on the Homer Hawks Spring team.
By they way, what a surprise for the 10's when they got to play the semis on the HRP Astroturf field!
And I would be remiss if we didn't applaud Craig Walker - tourney site director for the 14's - his cunning guile and leadership took on a bad situation Saturday morning with field delays, got the teams coordinated and shuffled to appropriate fields - then added two games at night to stay ahead of the rain! Craig, I hope those Rocker guys the Mayor and Judge learned something from your leadership Saturday!

Mr. Walker spent Saturday afternoon sitting on a lounge chair in front of the concession stand.

Mr. Walker may just be the most genius Site Director I have ever encountered - even better than the Wiz. As others thought he was crazy with notes pinned to his shirt like a young Ray Rayner, Walker, as he has become known (ala Cher, Michael, Pele), was strategically beating the weather man with his cunning adjustments and moving Sunday morning games into Saturday night. Without the man they call Walker, where would HRP be? Post script - I just learned last night that the NBA has offered Walker a job as their playoff scheduling guru, to try to take the playoffs from 2 months to 4 weeks. Congrats Walker - you've earned the big time!
