Despite the rotten softball weather we've been having, other members of the 16U Purple team are also doing well:
Lea LaSota is 1 -1 and pitching quite well for the Stagg freshman team!
Mandi Phelan has a HR against Bremen and is a key contributor for the Lincoln-Way Central sophomore team!
Alyssa Popp has found the hitting groove, getting a HR and other key hits for the Andrew sophomore squad!
Keep up the great work girls!

Softball: Sophomores Toth, Jankowski live up to expectations April 24, 2008BY STEVE T. GORCHES Post-Tribune staff writer
Font Size Print Email En Espanol Black Text White TextBefore transferring to the Hanover Central school system a couple years back, Jessica Toth didn't know much about the high school's softball tradition. Before moving to Cedar Lake from Crete, Ill., Kelsey Jankowski wasn't quite sure what it meant to wear the Wildcats' softball uniform.
After a full season and 10 games this year, the sophomore standouts know plenty.
"The Wendlingers are what everyone talks about," Toth said. "I've been asked, 'Are you better than (Amanda) Wendlinger?' It adds a little pressure, but that's OK."
They also have the pressure of living up to the aura of the 2004 Class 2A state title squad with Wendlinger tossing a perfect game in the championship game.
That kind of pressure doesn't bother the sophomore pitchers who also provide plenty of punch at the plate.
"It gives us that extra oomph to do well," said Jankowski, who chuckled at her use of vocabulary. "It gives us a lot to live up to and a goal to strive for."
So far, so good.
Toth drove in the winning run on Tuesday in a 2-1 triumph over Class 2A sectional rival Wheeler in the eighth inning. Toth also got the pitching victory with Wheeler's only run unearned.
Toth says pitching is her favorite part of the game despite her hitting prowess.
Jankowski had a double in Tuesday's victory. She's had some pitching gems of her own in leading Hanover to an 8-2 record (before Wednesday's game against Hebron) and the No. 2 ranking in the Class 2A coaches poll.
Jankowski says hitting is her favorite aspect of softball.
As for that pressure both sophomores seem to relish, it's not being placed on them by coach Larry McMillen, who seems to be smiling a little more than he has in the last three years.
"You're not going to replace an Amanda Wendlinger," he said. "Whether these two can be all-staters, that remains to be seen. They both have the talent, play other positions and they both hit well."
And unlike that memorable 2004 squad, they're not the only offense. Back then it was Wendlinger in the circle, and Wendlinger at the plate with one or two other hitters chipping in. The end results was usually a 1-0 or 2-1 victory.
Offense isn't an issue this season.
"They're not the only offense on the team, but they're right in the middle and it's hard to pitch around them with the other hitters in the lineup," McMillen said, sounding like a proud father when talking about a potent offense.
"We go seven or eight deep hitting-wise."
That includes freshman outfielder Tiffany Gibson. She's hitting close to .500 and was the star in Hanover's impressive 3-2 victory over Lowell earlier this season with two hits and the game-winning RBI in the ninth inning.
"She puts the bat on the ball and she doesn't get cheated," McMillen said of his No. 5 hitter behind Jankowski and Toth. "She only has one strikeout on the season, and she'll make you say 'Wow!' out there with some of the plays she makes."
So what is McMillen's answer to the question, "Is this team as good or better than the 2004 squad?" He tries to remain down the middle on the subject despite fond memories of that year.
"The jury's still out ... and that happens June 7," he said, referring to the state final and the hope that his team would still be playing that day.
"Through the lineup we're probably a little better and we're definitely a lot deeper. Defensively we're about equivalent on that end. We're still relatively young and (the 2004) team was pretty senior-laden."
Toth and Jankowski may still be learning about Hanover's softball history before last season, but this week's Wheeler victory was sweet because of what the sophomores do remember -- a 2-1 loss to the Bearcats in last year's sectional final.
"That game was tough to take," Jankowski said. "We definitely want to get that memory out of our heads."
And maybe give longtime Hanover fans better memories to add to the 2004 squad.

This just in off the news wire ....
(PPI) Palos Park, IL - The best kept secret in suburban Chicago softball may very well be in the circle these days for the Stagg HS freshman team. Lea LaSota is quietly asserting herself as a dominant force for her school's youngest squad. Thus far, she has compiled a 6 -2 record that includes 2 no-hitters.
She is not ignoring the offensive end of the game by any means. Occasionally called upon to be the leadoff hitter, Lea is getting it done there as well. Her batting average is above .600 and her OBP over .700.
Way to go Lea! Keep up the great work!
