HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Saint Joseph's College softball team is now 5-4 in away games this season after splitting Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference double header at Northern Kentucky University.
The Pumas came through with some clutch hitting late in the first game to win, 4-3, then lost the second contest, 4-0.
SJC (13-19, 5-8 GLVC) jumped on top in the very first inning of the day, as Nicole Costello (Fr., Oak Lawn, IL/Richards) doubled to bring home Kara Kristoff (So., Crown Point, IN/Andrean), who had reached on a double of her own. Costello later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Reed (Sr., Kokomo, IN/Western) to give the visitors an early 2-0 advantage.
Costello's double was her 13th of the season, tying the SJC single-season record set by teammate Cheryl Zakowski (Jr., Worth, IL/Mt. Assisi) last season.
The Norse (14-20, 5-9 GLVC) halved their deficit with a run in the bottom of the first, though SJC came back to score on a two-out infield single by Jessica Lynch (So., Berwyn, IL/Morton West) in the second inning. NKU, once again, scored in the bottom of the inning and trailed, 3-2, heading into the third.
A home run by Northern Kentucky's Cara Parker tied the score, 3-3, in the fifth, and the score remained deadlocked until the seventh inning. Jessie Privett (Sr., Fortville, IN/Mt. Vernon) drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a single by Stephanie Kickels (Jr., Lemont, IL) with two outs.
Costello and Kickels each went 2 for 3 in the game. Sara Somogyi (Jr., Chicago, IL/Resurrection) got the win (9-11), pitching three innings of relief. She allowed one run on two hits, striking out seven and issuing no walks.
The Pumas were never able to break the ice offensively in the nightcap, as NKU scored three times in the first two innings and never allowed a baserunner to advance to third base.
Stephenie Hash (Fr., Brookston, IN/Frontier) went 2 for 3 at the plate for SJC. Privett pitched the first three innings and got the loss (4-6), allowing three runs on three hits.
SJC travels to Bellarmine University (16-30, 4-10) on Sunday. The first of the two games is scheduled to begin at noon local time.
