Sandburg softball coach Jim Fabianski said getting one run early for ace Sara Olson ''is nice.'' But getting four ... that just hasn't happened.
Olson tossed a four-hitter and struck out 10 as the top-rated Eagles blanked reigning Class AA state champion Moline 4-0 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday in Orland Park.

In the second game, Moline (20-6), which lost at Beecher on Friday, won 6-5 in nine innings.

In last year's state final, Moline won and Sandburg, which never got to play the Maroons, finished third.

''It is very fortunate when we get a run early because it gives us a little cushion,'' Olson said. ''But four? This actually hasn't happened in a long time. The whole team came out ready to play, and everyone was hitting.''

In the bottom of the first, Ashley Conrad walked and scored from second on a two-out single by Andrea Colosimo to give the Eagles (23-3) a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, Brittany Wolski (2-for-3) had an RBI single and the No. 9 hitter, Katie Pistello (2-for-3), had a two-run single.

That was more than enough for Indiana recruit Olson, who improved to 16-2.

''That is our No. 7 and our No.9 hitters,'' Fabianski said. ''Brittany is our hottest hitter. She's been on fire lately.''

The key is lately. For the first part of the season, Sandburg was using a DH for Wolski.

''The first half of the season, I couldn't hit,'' Wolski said. ''I got my chance and things kind of worked out. Even at the beginning, we all have been working together.''

In the second game, Sandburg couldn't overcome four errors.

Moline scored five unearned runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead. The Eagles fought back and tied the game with three runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single by Olson, who was 3-for-5.

Moline scored in the ninth when Lindsay Fromi (3-for-5, two RBI), Meg Schroeder (2-for-5) and Rolanda Jacobs (2-for-5, two RBI) strung together three singles with two outs.

Laura Christensen and Wolski added two hits for Sandburg, which had 10 hits, but stranded 11 runners.

Lockport 3, Plainfield Central 2: Pitchers Dana Bowler and Kim Malacina held No. 8 Plainfield Central to three hits as the host Porters won a nonconference game.

Lockport (16-10) has taken its last three games after losing four in a row.

''We had a fire under our butts,'' Malacina said. ''We needed a spark.''

Bowler (6-5) and Malacina combined for 10 strikeouts and allowed no earned runs. The Porters took a 2-0 lead as Brittany Wilson had a leadoff double in the third and scored on a wild pitch, and Katelyn Braget belted a one-out homer in the fourth.

Malacina, who struck out four in the final 2 2/3 innings, added a one-out RBI single in the fifth for a 3-1 lead.

Stephanie Kirkpatrick and Samantha Corban drove in runs for Plainfield Central (21-7).

Oak Park 2, Downers Grove South 1: Kim Grimes doubled in the bottom of the eighth inning, bringing home Mattie Prodanovic (1-for-2, RBI) for the winning run as No. 6 Oak Park prevailed in extra innings in Winnetka. Sara Hutchinson (10-1) went all eight, striking out 11, walking none and allowing one run on five hits.

Oak Forest 10, Bradley 0: Diana Pickrum went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and struck out eight while allowing two hits to get the win for No. 9 Oak Forest (22-3).

Carly Norton was 2-for-2 with two RBI, Lisa Consorti was 2-for-3 with a run, and Cassie Rice had two RBI and two runs.

Lemont 3-15, Plainfield North 0-0: Suzie Rzegocki threw two no-hitters to lead host Lemont (20-6).

Rzegocki, who has thrown 12 no-hitters this season, was aided by Monica Strubl and Kirsten Luevano, each of whom had two RBI.

Marist 10-10, Fenwick 0-5: The No. 10 RedHawks swept a home doubleheader in the East Suburban Catholic. Colleen Biebel struck out eight in the Game 1 victory, and pitcher Kellie Snooks improved to 9-1 in Game 2.

West Aurora 1, Geneva 0: Sam Arenkill went the distance, scattering seven hits and striking out six in a nonconference road win for the Blackhawks (18-9). Arenkill was 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and an RBI.
