Coach,
I’m emailing 18U coaches asking your help in looking for an 08 catcher and 08 speed kid who can be either a left- or right-handed batter to finish off our 2008 class of scholarship athletes for the Heartland Hawks softball team, currently ranked 6th nationally and the 2008 Region 24 Champions. (http://www.heartland.edu/athletics/softball/). I want to be very honest about the specific qualities these two players must possess:
Catcher must have a home-to-2nd pop time of 1.75 sec or less
Speed player must have a home-to-1st time of 1.65 sec or less
Must be able to hit!
Must have personal responsibility
Must have a passion for the game of softball and must want to play on after Heartland
How to measure:
Catcher Pop Time: Have a pitcher throw the ball to the catcher who is in gear and in the down position. Start the watch when the ball hits the catcher’s glove. Stop the watch as soon as it hits the second baseman’s glove. The second baseman should be straddling second base; make sure she does not reach for the ball when she catches it.
Home to 1st: Start with your left foot on home plate and your right foot behind home. Start the watch when your front foot comes off the home plate. Stop the watch when 1st base is contacted.
Why would a player consider Heartland College?
D1 schools say you’re too small; if you can do the above, we don’t care how big you are.
They are coming off an injury and D1 got scared off.
They want to keep the chance of playing at the D1 level alive.
They can’t afford to attend a larger school.
They want to start off at a smaller school.
They just got overlooked.
One thing at which we excel at Heartland is getting our players exposed and moved onto the next level of college ball, whether it is after one year or two years at Heartland. You can log onto the above web address to find out more about Heartland Hawks Softball. If you have or know of any uncommitted player with the essential qualities listed above who would be interested in looking at Heartland, please contact me at the email address or phone listed below.
Always play to win!
