SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Joliet Catholic shocks Lincoln-Way C.
May 31, 2007 BY RANDY WHALEN Joliet Catholic advanced to its first sectional final since the merger with St. Francis in 1990 by stunning top-seeded Lincoln-Way Central 6-4 on Wednesday at the Bloom Sectional in Chicago Heights. Lincoln-Way Central (32-5) took a 3-2 lead in the first on a three-run homer by Alicia Abbott. The Angels (28-5) rallied back and took the lead for good at 4-3 on an RBI single by Gabby Smith in the top of the fifth.
Smith and Annemarie Hickey had two hits, and Ashley Barichello had a two-run double for Joliet Catholic.
''I hadn't been hitting the ball that well, so I took some extra batting practice yesterday,'' Smith said. ''It was so exciting, and I was so happy that we could battle back.''
Lincoln-Way Central had nine hits but stranded 12 -- including leaving the bases loaded three times.
• Also at Bloom, Ashley Linhart hit a game-winning double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as Lincoln-Way East edged Andrew 4-3 to advance to its fourth sectional-title game in six years.
Linhart's hit scored Alisa Goler, who was intentionally walked with two outs and nobody on base.
Goler had hit her seventh home run of the season to give the Griffins (29-7) a 1-0 lead in the first.
Andrew (20-12) had solo home runs by Amanda Bilina and Julie Love.
RESURRECTION: Nicki Nadrowski's fielder's choice to second in the ninth inning propelled Resurrection past Niles West 6-5.
The Bandits (28-4) extended their lead to 5-1 in the third with back-to-back home runs from pitcher Hana Somogyi and infielder Alex Athens.
Audrey Kolodziej and Jenny Di John each had an RBI in the fifth for Niles West to cut it to 5-4. Carli Peters tied it for the Wolves (13-21) with an RBI single in the seventh.
Somogyi allowed a season-high 11 hits but struck out seven in a complete-game effort.
Mike Lansu
ST. CHARLES EAST: Lake Park (33-4) handed Burlington Central pitcher Erica Maisto her first loss of the season as the Lancers advanced with a 5-1 win.
Lynsey Ciezki scored in the fourth on a bunt single to give Lake Park a 2-0 lead.
Burlington Central (33-5) scored in the top of the sixth on a Liz Gajewski double that scored Ashley Scheffler.
Winning pitcher Missy Mazur (26-3) had six strikeouts.
Brian Bown
SANDBURG: Sandburg pitcher Sara Olson defeated visiting Stagg 4-0 in Orland Park.
Olson had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning, but gave up a two-out single to Carli Raisutis.
Olson wasn't aware of the no-no.
''I wasn't worried about that,'' said Olson, who struck out six, walked two and went 2-for-3. ''I'd say my changeup was not working, but my riseball would keep them guessing. I wanted to keep them off base.''
Sandburg (31-3) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an error. The Eagles padded their lead with a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth.
Stagg finished 20-13.
Tina Akouris
NEUQUA VALLEY: Brittany Adcox fired a two-hit shutout, and top-seeded Plainfield Central played error-free defense to beat mistake-prone Downers Grove North 4-0.
Adcox (16-3) struck out six and allowed only one runner to reach second base.
''Our defense was amazing today,'' said Adcox, who was perfect through three innings. ''We just played solid defense and took advantage of their errors.''
Downers Grove North (22-15) made five errors that led to three unearned runs.
Julia Fink and Danielle Belobraydich each had two hits for Central (29-7), and Tricia Nelson and Kristina Maggio each had run-scoring doubles.
Anneliese Jagielo and Melissa Weiss had singles for the Trojans.
