I just received word that the 14U Homer Hawks Teal team went undefeated today to win the Rockton tournament. I am hoping that Jim Doane posts the specifics on the day.
Congratulations. Coach Craig

The Hawks 14U Teal traveled north to take part in the Duel in the Dome 3 in the indoor facility on the campus of Hononegah High School. The newest Hawks did what they do best....hit the ball, averaging 13 runs per game while only allowing 2 total runs for the 4 games. Special thanks to Bridget S., who went with the team and played 3 strong games at short as well as throwing game #3, a complete game 1-hitter against host Triple Play USA. Hawks pitchers were all throwing the ball extremely well, striking out 34 opposing batters over the course of the 4 games.
game 1 v. Illinois Thunder 9-1 game 2 v. Carol Stream Storm 16-0 game 3 v. Triple Play USA 18-1 Championship v. Illinois Thunder 9-0

to all Hawks fans - enjoy the game summaries from this past Sunday's action in Rockton.
Looking to bounce back from their recent early exit from 2009’s first tourney 2 weeks ago in Indianapolis, the repackaged 14U Homer Hawks Teal soared onto the scene in high fashion, swooping into the dome at Hononegah and, more or less, devouring the competition. The first opponent for the newest Hawks was the Illinois Thunder. Before the Thunder knew what hit them they were reeling from a seven run first inning onslaught that included home runs by Maddi Doane, Dominique Roa and Sarah Thompson. For Roa it was the first of two round-trippers for the game to go with a single in her other plate appearance as she racked up 4 RBI’s. Miranda Cavin (2-3) and Elaine Heflin (2-2) also had multiple hits. Newest team member Alyssa Koziol took the ball in the circle and threw a complete-game, 3-hitter. Koziol had total command from the start, walking no one while striking out four. Defense was solid behind Koziol, playing 5 innings of error-free ball.
Game 2 of Sunday’s four game slate was against the Carol Stream Storm, a team that the Hawks had played last fall. As was the case in the previous contest, the Storm found themselves on the losing end of a shutout. Elaine Heflin started game 2 and quickly calmed the Storm, pitching 5 strong innings and facing just one batter over the minimum. Along the way she struck out 9 Carol Stream girls while walking just one. She also had a nice game at the plate, enjoying her 2nd game in a row with multiple hits. Maddi Doane, Alyssa Koziol, Miranda Cavin, Dominique Roa, Bridget Stroh and Madison Widhalm each also had at least two hits apiece with Widhalm going a perfect 3 for 3 and scoring twice. Cavin led in the runs scored department, crossing the dish three times. Emily Hastings, Sarah Thompson, Doane, Stroh and Widhalm each scored two runs. Heflin, Stroh and Roa made the most of their seven total hits as they drove in three runs each. Homer continued their strong play in the field handling every ball hit at them without a bobble.
Game 3 had the Hawks soaring even higher, belting out 16 hits. Noteworthy on offense were Ali Michalik (3-4, 2 Runs, 4 RBI’s), Maddi Doane (2-3, 1 Run, 1 BB), Miranda Cavin (3-3, 3 Runs), Bridget Stroh (3 Runs), Sarah Thompson (3 RBI’s) and Elaine Heflin (2-3) although every girl had a hand in the victory including multi-run or multi-RBI efforts by Alyssa Koziol, Emily Hastings, Dominique Roa, and Madison Widhalm. Stroh got the call in the circle for the final round robin game and pitched just three innings in the run-rule shortened contest. Even with such limited action she was able to strike out 7 Triple Play girls with just one ball leaving the infield, a third inning solo homerun that accounted for all the hits and runs tallied against the Hawks. The win sent the Hawks into the championship game to face the Illinois Thunder who, up to that point, had gone 2-1 on the day.
Elaine Heflin took the ball in the circle for the championship of the Honoegah Duel in the Dome and promptly took charge of the game. She struck out the side in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th innings, at one point striking out 7 Thunder batters in a row. She eventually tallied 14 K’s, walked none and gave up just one hit en route to her second victory of the day. Heflin also continued her strong performance at the plate, driving in 2 more runs for a total of 9 RBI’s over the course of 4 games. Miranda Cavin added 3 more RBI’s to her day’s total on a single and a homerun and Sarah Thompson also had 3 RBI’s. The win capped off a perfect day for the Hawks with Homer scoring 52 runs while giving up just 2. The hit parade was just as lopsided, with the Hawks garnering 54 while giving up just 5. Elaine Heflin (.800), Miranda Cavin (.750), Dominique Roa (.636), Madison Widhalm (.559), Sarah Thompson (.559) and Maddi Doane (.500) each batted at least .500. Heflin and Cavin found themselves at the top of most other offensive categories (Runs, RBI’s, hits). Dominique Roa led all Hawks in slugging thanks to her 5 extra base hits (2HR’s, 3 doubles). The girls played almost every facet of the game perfectly, committing just one fielding errors in 24 chances; a hurried throw that skipped under the first baseman’s glove. Great job, Hawks!!
The girls will continue to practice indoors until their next winter contest when they travel to Fort Wayne and conclude their winter games in a weekend tournament, March 6-8.
Special thanks to Bridget Stroh for making the trip north with the Teal team. She fit in nicely with the other girls and contributed greatly to the team's success. Thanks Bridget!
