bracket game 1 Hawks 9 Central Indiana Catz 3 bracket game 2 Hawks 13 Indiana Shockwaves 0 championship Hawks 2 Summit City Thunder 1 (ITB)
Noteworthy performances in the championship game were turned in by Miranda Cavin with an 8th inning, 2 run homer over the right-center field fence to break a scoreless tie and a sixteen strikeout effort by Hawks ace Elaine "L Train" Heflin.

I want to congratulate our girls on a great tournament and an exciting win in Fort Wayne. Hawks did show some power with three home runs coming from Dominique R., Emily H. and Miranda C. Hawks pitching once again was very strong. Thanks to a strong showing from Dale R. and an impressive performance from the " El Train ". I also want to thank Marisa W. for her great defensive performance at shortstop and behind home plate. Remember this Hawks.......... Teams can have the best players in the world playing for their organization, but if those players can't perform well together than that team isn't worth a dime. I am honored to coach a great group of girls.

Looking for game summaries? Well, here they are from this past weekend's games in the 2nd Annual Hoosier Open at the Fort Wayne (IN) Dome.
The 14U Teal Hawks closed out their winter tournament schedule with a trip to the Fort Wayne Dome and came away with their 7th championship (out of 8 tournaments) for the 2008/2009 season. The Hawks opened pool play against the Indiana Heartbreakers. Homer came away with a 3-0 victory behind the solid pitching of Dale Ryndak. Indiana was limited to just three hits by Ryndak, who also had 4 strikeouts while allowing just one free pass. Ryndak helped herself at the plate also, driving in the games first run on a solid hit to left in the second inning. Miranda Cavin and Maddi Doane accounted for the remaining RBI production with back-to-back doubles in the final frame with Cavin’s hit sending Madison Widhalm across the plate with the first of 2 insurance runs in the inning.
The Indiana Rebels were next for the Hawks. Both sides knew it was to be a good game and the girls did not disappoint. The Rebels scored the game’s only run, making the most of their two hits, both first inning singles. Sandwich a stolen base on an attempted pick off at second between the two hits and you have a recipe for a 1-0 deficit. The Hawks also had both of their hits (Emily Hastings/Sarah Thompson) in the same inning but were unable to push the run across. Elaine Heflin pitched a gem, but came out the loser, striking out 12 Rebels in 4 2/3 innings. She also came close to being the offensive hero as she came to bat in the second inning with the bases packed. She rocketed the first pitch she saw right back up the middle but had the misfortune to have the ball hit the Rebel pitcher and carom right to the second baseman who easily made the play at first to end the inning.
The Hawk’s bats finally came alive against the Central Indiana Catz as Homer entered double digit territory in team hits (11) for the first time in the tournament. Three Hawk girls had a multi-hit game. Miranda Cavin (3/3, 2 Runs, 1 RBI), Sarah Thompson (2/3, 1 Run) and Dale Ryndak (2/3, 1 Run, 1 RBI) accounted for 7 of the 11 Hawk’s hits. Other offensive firepower of note was a bases clearing, three run double in the fifth inning by Dominique Roa. Ryndak threw her second complete game victory of the day, striking out eight Catz’ girls while allowing just one hit.
Game four (semifinals) had the Hawks facing the Indiana Shockwaves. The Hawks pitching duo of Ryndak and Heflin combined to throw a one-hitter. Between the pair they ended up recording 12 of the 15 outs by the “K”, striking out the side in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd innings. The offense continued to pour it on, garnering a total of 17 hits, including two first inning homeruns. Miranda Cavin (2/3, 1 Run), Emily Hastings (2/3 (HR, 1B), 2 Runs, 3 RBI’s), Sarah Thompson (3/3 (2-2B, 1B), 2 Runs, 3 RBI’s), Dominique Roa (3/3 (HR, 2B, 1B), 2 Runs, 3 RBI’s) and Madison Widhalm (2/2, BB, 2 RBI’s) led the charge although the attack was nicely rounded out by each of the other batters getting at least one hit with Maddi Doane and Marisa Wakely reaching base in 2 of their 3 plate appearances. Ali Michalik made the defensive play of the game on the only ball hit out of the infield; a tailing, sinking line drive hit toward the right field line that she caught on the run.
Saving the best game for last, the Hawks met up with the Summit City (IN) Thunder in the championship game and the pitchers from each team took over. After seven innings, the Thunder hurler had allowed just one hit, a third inning single by Madison Widhalm. Up to that point, the Thunder pitcher had recorded 12 strikeouts, and would add three more in the 1st International Tie Breaker (ITB) inning. The Hawk’s ace, Elaine Heflin, was equal to the task, giving up just two hits while striking out 15 Thunder girls in regulation and tacking on one more “K” in the ITB inning. Just your typical pitching duel with both teams trying to get a lead for their ace to protect. The Thunder had their best chance in the fourth inning, with Heflin walking a batter and hitting another. She was able to get out of the jam, inducing the Thunder’s cleanup hitter to ground into a force out at third for the inning's second out and then striking out the next batter to end the threat. The only runner to reach second for the Hawks was Widhalm. After her single she stole second but was out trying to steal third, thus ending the threat (and the inning). The next runner to find themselves at second base for the Hawks was Ali Michalik at the start of the ITB inning. The plan was to sac bunt her to third and let our #3 and #4 hitters take a shot at driving her in from there. Maddi Doane took the first part of the plan and 3 fouled bunt attempts later was heading back to the bench with Michalik still on second. Miranda Cavin was up next and brilliantly embraced her role in the plan as she drove the first pitch she saw over the right center field fence to give the Hawks a 2 run cushion. The Thunder was able to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the eighth, but the Hawks gladly traded outs for the run with all the confidence that Heflin would shut the door on them, and she did, retiring the Thunder's leadoff batter on a sharply hit ball right at the Hawks 1st baseman, Sarah Thompson, to end the game. Congratulations girls on an outstanding fall/winter schedule, entering eight tournaments and winning seven of them (one at 16U), compiling a 39-4-1 record along the way.
Especially, a big 14U Teal shout out of thanks to Dale and Marisa for your valuable contributions to the teams weekend success. We couldn’t have done it without you!!
