Elk Grove Heat (rain shortened) tournament write-ups:
The Homer Hawks 14 Teal team took to the field in their second tournament of the Spring season looking to improve upon their 1-1-1 start last weekend. Homer’s first opponent, the Lake Zurich Lightning, found themselves paired against a Hawks team looking to rip someone apart. The result, a run-rule shortened, three inning, 14-0 win by the Purple & Black to open pool play in the Elk Grove Heat Tournament. Every Hawk reached base in the contest with Dominique Roa (1B, 2BB, 1RBI, 3R), Sarah Thompson (3B, 1B, BB, 3RBI, 2R) and Bridget Stroh (1B (3), 1RBI, 2R) doing it three times each. Justine McClendon (BB, ROE, 2R) was credited with the game winning run , drawing a base on balls to open the game and scoring ahead of a Maddi Doane home run. Doane added a single later in the contest, scoring twice and driving in three runs. Miranda Cavin (2B, 1B, 1RBI, 2R) had a multi-hit game, going two for three and Emily Hastings had a productive day at the dish, driving in three runs. Madison Widhalm tallied the other Homer run, drawing a walk, moving to second on a wild pitch and scoring on Elaine Heflin’s single. In the field, the Hawks made quick work of the Lightning with Stroh having to face just nine batters to get the win. She finished the perfect game with six strikeouts.
14 Teal’s next opponent in pool play was the Schaumburg Sluggers and although the score was different, the scenario played out pretty much the same….Hawks score early and often, hold opponents hitless, take advantage of the other team’s mistakes and play solid defense. The end result … a 5-0 win behind a no-hit, complete game performance by Elaine Heflin. The Hawks pitcher came close to a second consecutive Homer perfect performance, surrendering a one out walk in the last inning. Schaumburg did try to negate Heflin’s power game by mixing in some bunting/slapping, but Teal’s defense was up to the challenge, handling all ten chances given them. The top of the order was the key offensively, with Maddi Doane, in the number two spot, reaching base all three times with two walks and a double, driving in one and scoring once. Justine McLendon, batting ahead of Doane, scored twice on a walk and a double. Number three hitter, Miranda Cavin, also reached base twice (2B, BB) and drove in two runs in Homer’s three run first inning. The middle of the order contributed nicely, with Emily Hastings reaching base in both plate appearances, driving in Homer’s final run of the game with a double in the fourth and plating Bridget Stroh, who had reached on a walk. Although Homer had only five hits (Ali Michalik had the fifth, a two-out single in the fourth), they were the recipients of five walks, one HBP and a Schaumburg infield error and made the most of them.
As was the case last weekend, the weather did not cooperate and more rains came and went, making the fields unplayable for Sunday’s scheduled contests. The Hawks play a couple of “friendlies” on Sunday (5/3) and are back in action on 5/9 in Motherpalooza and 5/16 & 5/17 in the Sparks tournament.
