Motherpalooza game summaries:
Game 1: W vs. Wasco Diamonds ('95), 11-2
Game 2: W vs. Oak Park Huskies, 12-0 (3 innings)
Game 3: W vs. Homer Hawks Purple, 7-2
Championship: W vs. Elmwood Park Lady Tigers, 2-0
Teal opened Motherpalooza with a solid performance, defeating the Wasco Diamonds (‘95) by a score of 11-2. Bridget Stroh started the one day tournament in the circle and earned the complete game win. She gave up three hits, all in the Diamonds 2-run second inning, as she averaged nearly a strikeout an inning, fanning five Wasco batters in the six inning game while walking just one. The Hawks scored all the runs they would need when they crossed the dish four times in the first frame on three hits, a walk and an error. The big blow was a 2-run home run by Miranda Cavin (3R, 2H (HR,1B), 2RBI) that had Wasco on their heels only two batters into the game. RBI doubles by Stroh (2R, 2H (3B,2B), 2RBI) and Madison Widhalm capped off the inning. The Hawks continued their offensive barrage with Emily Hastings and Elaine Heflin taking the Diamonds hurler long for home runs in Teal’s 3-run third. Hastings’s was a solo shot and Heflin’s drove in Stroh, who had reached on an error ahead of her. Other notables on offense were Dominique Roa, who had a single and a 2-run homer; Sarah Thompson with 3 RBI’s on two doubles and Maddi Doane going 2-3 with a walk in the leadoff spot.
Homer’s next opponent, the Oak Park Huskies, proved no match for an energized Teal team. The Hawks run-ruled the Huskies in 3 innings, scoring six, four and two runs respectively. Elaine Heflin was as perfect as you could get for three innings, striking out every batter she faced! The Huskies did not go quietly though with not one of the K’s by a called third strike. Maddi Doane and Miranda Cavin started the game practically the same way as the previous contest, with Doane singling ahead of Cavin’s second home run of the day. Cavin was perfect for the game, scoring twice on her three hits (HR,2B,1B) as was Ali Michalik (2-2, 2RBI) and Heflin (2-2 (3B,2B), 2R, 2RBI). The win sent the Hawks into the semifinals against Craig Walker’s 14 Purple team.
Hawks Teal needed one time through the lineup to adjust to Purple’s hard throwing pitcher, but adjust they did, eventually garnering eleven hits and scoring seven times. Three Hawks had a multi-hit game: Maddi Doane (2-4 (2B,1B), 1R, 1RBI), Sarah Thompson (2-3 (2B,1B), 2R, 2RBI) and Ali Michalik (2-3 (2B, 1B), 2R). Elaine Heflin took the ball in the circle for the second straight game and for the second straight game pitched impressively, striking out 14 over seven innings while scattering four hits. The victory earned Teal a spot in the championship game, facing off against the Elmwood Park Lady Tigers.
Homer took the tandem approach to pitching the championship game as Bridget Stroh started and was credited with the win. Her four inning line was: 5 K’s, 2 Hits - a 3rd inning double stranded at 2nd and a 4th inning single that didn’t advance past first base. Elaine Heflin came on to earn the save, pitching three scoreless innings of relief, striking out six, hitting a batter and walking another. For the twenty three innings pitched by Heflin and Stroh in the tournament they totaled 39 K’s, gave up four earned runs and only seven hits. And a shutout pitching performance is exactly what the Hawks needed as they struggled to find their timing against the EP pitcher. And when they did hit the ball hard it was, more often than not, right at someone. They were able to scratch out single runs in the 2nd and the 6th innings to win by a narrow 2-0 margin. Three singles in a row by Emily Hastings, Stroh and Madison Widhalm to open the 2nd frame looked promising but the Hawks were able to tally just once on a sac fly by Heflin. The score stayed 1-0 until Teal’s half of the sixth when they were able to plate an insurance run. After one was out, Thompson stroked her second single of the game to center and advanced to second on a free pass to Hastings. Stroh, returning the favor of the RBI provided by Heflin in the second, drove a single to left, scoring Thompson and giving the Hawks a two run cushion going into the last inning. After a leadoff walk by the Lady Tiger’s number ten hitter Heflin settled down, retiring the next three batters in order and securing the championship for Teal.
Congratulations girls on a fine team effort with everyone producing and contributing. The Hawk’s defense was solid for the four games, committing just one error that allowed a Hawk’s Purple runner to take an extra base on a single. Homer’s bats were alive, belting out 43 total hits, including 5 home runs (Cavin (2), Roa, Hastings, Heflin). Thompson led all hitters, going 7 for 12 (.583) followed closely by Stroh (.546), Heflin (.500), Doane (.462), Cavin (.429) and Michalik (.364). Great job girls….keep it up!!
