Ladies, just want to say a great tournament win by a great team....... You ladies did everything you could to win this tournament....... Great fielding and pitching, to go along with timely hitting and small ball....... In the championship game I think people saw what you girls can do when this team is running on cylinders......... WE ARE TOUGH TO BEAT WHEN WE PLAY GREAT DEFENSE AND HIT THE BALL......... 'L Train', 'Ice' and Alyssa great performances in the circle yesterday.......... Alyssa great to have you back kid............. Mad Dog, one more biscuit for breakfast and that ball would have left the yard.......... I also want to say that I will definately miss Bridget and Justine on this team...... You two ladies made a great addition this team needed in the spring....... I know this won't be the last time I'll see you ladies...... Justine you improved big time on your fielding and your throws got a lot stronger....... Birdge 'Ice', keep up with the Glare and have Ice in those viens when you pitch against your opponents..... Great job kid...... To Coach Doane, I like the new word for Dominique..... Game Summaries:
Homer Hawks Teal took the field in their first 16U tournament and continued right where they left off last weekend, playing solid defense behind strong pitching and timely hitting. The Hawks first opponent in pool play was the Downers Grove Outlaws and the result was a first game shutout victory, 4-0. Recently (re-)acquired freshman standout, Alyssa Koziol (LTHS) started the game in the circle and threw seven strong innings in the complete game win. Along the way she faced two batters over the minimum, striking out twelve, walking one and surrendering just one hit, a 7th inning, one-out single. Koziol also was instrumental on offense, getting on base all three plate appearances, rapping out two singles and driving in a run. Miranda Cavin started the scoring in the 1st inning, driving in Justine McClendon and Madison Widhalm. McClendon led off the game with a bunt single and Widhalm was safe on a fielder’s choice, sending McClendon to second ahead of Cavin’s RBI base hit. Emily Hastings plated the fourth Teal run, beating out an infield chopper and scoring Dominique Roa. Other Hawks tallying hits were Ali Michalik, Sarah Thompson and Maddi Doane.
The Hawks second game of the day was against another group of Outlaws, these from Oswego. The result was much the same, a decisive shutout victory, this one a 12-0 run-rule shortened game. Teal scored all the runs they needed in the 1st inning, crossing the dish 12 times before any were out. Justine McClendon and Maddi Doane had the distinction of getting two hits each in the same inning. After McClendon led off with a single, she was followed in quick succession by every other Hawk in the lineup reaching base and scoring. The Outlaws did not give up easily, getting two hits in the first and another in the second before going quietly in the third to end the game off starter Bridget Stroh. Stroh had a total of 7 strikeouts in her short stint as the Hawks sailed to their second win of the day.
Looking to earn a bye in the first round of bracket with a win in their 3rd pool game of the day, Teal battled the Lemont Rockers (RC) and came out on top with a 5-1 win and the morning off on Sunday (but in a good way!). Elaine Heflin took the ball and survived four hits, five walks and a couple of errors to earn the “W”. She had 9 strikeouts for her six innings of work, managing to get out of bases loaded situations in the 2nd and 6th innings. Miranda Cavin was instrumental in squelching another Rocker’s chance in the 3rd frame, nailing a runner who had strayed too far from the bag at third. Maddi Doane (2 singles, 1R, 2RBI) and Bridget Stroh (single, BB, 1R) were perfect at the plate. Ali Michalik, Alyssa Koziol and Emily Hastings accounted for the rest of Teal’s run scoring, each crossing the plate after getting on with a base hit. Madison Widhalm returned to the lineup and came through, going 1-2 and driving in a run in the 2nd inning.
Up next for Homer were the Downers Grove Rebels, the one thing standing between the Hawks and their 5th consecutive Championship game appearance. The bats continued to be hot for Teal, swatting a total of 10 hits for the game. Miranda Cavin, Sarah Thompson and Bridget Stroh each had two hits in the winning effort. Ashley Parenti (1-3, 1R) started the scoring in the third. She led off the inning with a single to left and scored on Alyssa Koziol’s double. Koziol was promptly pushed around the bases by a RBI single by Cavin to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. Teal stretched the lead out to 3-0 in the next inning on a leadoff single by Dominique Roa and a RBI single by Sarah Thompson. The Hawks were able to load the bases later in the inning but stranded the runners, unable to cushion their lead any more. Starting pitcher Elaine Heflin was on both ends of the spectrum in her two innings pitched, walking 3 Rebel’s batters and striking out the other six she faced. Through it all she kept Downers Grove off the scoreboard but was lifted in the third for reliever Alyssa Koziol. The defense came up with another big play after the Rebels leadoff batter opened the frame with a double. Madison Widhalm, continuing her solid play at second, threw out the DG runner at third after taking the throw on the sacrifice bunt. Her throw caught the running Rebel with nowhere to go but back to the dugout. Koziol finished the game, giving up just two hits over her 5 innings pitched, striking out seven. She also walked one that eventually came around to tally the only run of the contest for Rebels.
The Downers Grove Outlaws faced off against the Hawks in the championship game of the Lisle Slammers tournament having faced Homer on Saturday (and lost 4-0) to open the tournament. The final margin of victory was the same (4) with the Hawks prevailing with a 5-1 win on another combined pitching performance by Elaine Heflin and Alyssa Koziol. This time is was Koziol who started, going five innings. Her line, 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 5 SO, 1 BB, was solid, earning her the victory. Heflin, in a non-save situation, came on to face the Outlaws the third time through their order and made quick work of her 2 innings pitched, striking out the last 5 girls she faced. Offensively, the Hawks scored all the runs they would need in the first inning when they tallied five times on hits by Justine McClendon, Maddi Doane (3B), Miranda Cavin, Dominique Roa, Emily Hastings and Madison Widhalm. Hasting’s hit was the first of three for the game, raising her tournament average to a whopping .539 to lead all Hawks. Miranda Cavin and Maddi Doane also had multiple hits, each driving in one and scoring once. The teams hefty .389 tournament average was aided by the additional individual performances of Alyssa Koziol - .500 (6-12), Maddi Doane - .500 (7-14), Sarah Thompson - .500 (6-12), Miranda Cavin - .462 (6-13) and Dominique “The Dominator” Roa - .417 (5-12). Ali Michalik made the most of her plate appearances, going 3-8 with 2 runs scored. On the pitching/defensive side of the coin the Hawks trio of hurlers never threw a pitch when they were trailing. They struck out a total of 51 batters (Koziol -24, Heflin-20, Stroh-7) over 30 innings giving up just 3 earned runs and the defense was solid, with at least five base runners picked off or caught stealing. Congratulations girls on a fine spring season. After a slow 1-1-1 start in a rained out Northlake tourney to open the year, the Hawks have reeled off 20 straight wins. WOW!!!! Special thanks to our departing teammates, Justine McClendon and Bridget Stroh. You both bring valuable assets to the game and we couldn’t have done it without you. Best of luck on 14 Black. The Hawks are in action next weekend in the 16U Bluesfest in Elgin, hoping to continue their strong performance in a full field of 16 teams.
