Game summaries:
For the second weekend in a row the Hawks came out ahead in every category when compared with all opponents faced for the tournament. They hit better, they fielded better, they pitched better and they took advantage of their opponents’ mistakes more often than the other way around. The result was 1) winning their fourth consecutive Spring tourney 2) extending their winning streak to 27 games and 3) for the second tournament in a row, they have given their pitchers the luxury of pitching with a lead every inning of every game.
It all started with a 13-1 pool game victory over the Elgin Heat. The run-rule shortened game (3 innings) was a true hit fest for Homer with three girls having multiple hits; Maddi Doane (single, double), Miranda Cavin (single, double) and Ali Michalik (single (2)) each had two base-hits. Cavin, Michalik, Sarah Thompson, Alyssa Koziol and Madison Widhalm had a 1.000 OBP, reaching base a total of 16 times between them. Thompson, Doane, Koziol, Widhalm and Michalik scored two runs each in the winning effort. In the circle, Koziol was the pitcher of record, going all three innings, striking out four and giving up just one hit.
Pool game two was much more of the same with Teal snuffing out any chance the Lombard Flames may have had with a 19 hit performance. The Hawks flexed their muscle as they belted out a home run (Miranda Cavin (pinch-hit!)),a triple, three doubles and fourteen singles. Four different girls had three hits each (and scored three times each); Sarah Thompson in her new role as lead-off hitter had a double and two singles, driving in four runs. Maddi Doane had 7 total bases for her four plate appearances adding a double, single and walk to her 2nd inning triple. Bri Cavin saw her first action of the day and came through with three singles and Alyssa Koziol closed out the 3-hit list with a double and 2 singles getting two of her hits in Homer’s six-run second inning. The Hawks added 3 runs in the 3rd and 8 more in the fourth to end the game. Elaine Heflin took the pill for Homer and tossed a no-hitter for the Hawks. Along the way Heflin struck out nine and walked three not allowing a ball out of the infield.
With game 1 going 3 innings, game 2 lasting 4, it was no surprise to see the Hawks third pool game finish after five. The final, a 15-0 shutout against Naperville Diamonds Bat Rats, was more of the same: hard hitting, solid defense and strong pitching. Continuing their offensive barrage, Teal totaled fifteen hits for the contest. Emily Hastings led all hitters going 4 for 4 with three singles and a three-run home run. Maddi Doane continued her hot hitting, getting 3 hits (double, 2 singles), driving in three and scoring three times herself. Dominique Roa also had three hits with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. Ashley Parenti had 2 RBI’s on a base hit in the second, driving in Alyssa Koziol (triple, BB, 3R) and Madison Widhalm (single, HBPB, 1R, 1RBI). Elaine Heflin rounded out the extra-base hit parade with a triple and eventually scored the first of the Hawk’s seven tallies for the frame. For the third game in a row, Hawks pitching dominated with Bri Cavin throwing a near perfect game, giving up just one hit while striking out 11 of the 15 batters she faced. The Naperville runner that did reach to lead off the fifth was just as quickly erased from the base paths by the strong arm of Hawks catcher, Miranda Cavin, who was battery mates with her sister for the first time since 10U ball.
Earning a #1 seed, Homer faced off against the Illinois Xplosion, hoping to have an easy time in their first bracket game, their fourth game overall on the day. But the Xplosion had other ideas, coming out swinging against Hawk’s starter, Alyssa Koziol. Sarah Thompson was instrumental in keeping the game scoreless in each of the first two innings. In both cases she started the play on balls hit past her by throwing a strike to SS Miranda Cavin who then caught runners trying to stretch their hits. In the first, with one out, the Xplosion’s #2 batter belted a triple but rounded third a little too much, not knowing the cannon she was facing. A strike to Dominique Roa from Cavin had the runner caught in a pickle and it was easy work recording the out 8-6-5-2. Cavin again showed her arm in the second, gunning down the Xplosion cleanup hitter trying to stretch a double into a triple…she was out by 15 feet. With the game scoreless through three, Coach Cavin changed things up the second time through the opposing lineup, bringing Bri Cavin out of the bullpen for the final three frames. Together, the tandem of Koziol and Cavin gave up five hits and struck out eight. Homer’s bats came alive in the fourth, loading the bases, but were unable to break the 0-0 deadlock. Teal finally got on the board in the fifth with Maddi Doane driving in Ali Michalik, Dominique Roa driving in Sarah Thompson and Emily Hastings driving in Doane. For Doane it was her fourth game of the tournament with multiple hits as she collected her 9th and 10th hits of the day, driving in a pair and scoring twice. Thompson (3-4, 2R), Hastings (single, triple, 1R, 2RBI) and Madison Widhalm (2-4, 1RBI) also had at least two hits each in the contest. Homer was able to put the game out of reach scoring 5 times after the first two batters of the inning recorded outs. Five consecutive singles by Michalik, Thompson, Doane, Cavin and Hastings followed by two infield errors on Roa and Koziol and a single by Widhalm was enough to end the game in the bottom of the fifth by the mercy rule.
The Streamwood Magic was the Hawks next challenge and the Magic made a game of it throughout. The Hawks, batting as the home team, scored once in the 1st on two hits by Sarah Thompson (single) and Miranda Cavin (triple), once in the 3rd on a Maddi Doane solo home run and once in 5th on a Doane double and Cavin single. That was enough to hold off the Magic who scored twice in the late innings. In the sixth the Hawks were able to squelch a rally by yet again catching a base runner unawares. Alyssa Koziol got the win, going six strong innings, giving up just 3 hits and walking one. Bri Cavin came in to close the game and ran into trouble early giving up two hits and allowing Streamwood to pull within one but she battled through it and retired the next three batters in order leaving the Magic runner, and their hopes, stranded at third.
The semi-finals had Homer facing off against the Crystal Lake Tidal Waves. Although the Waves were not at full strength, they hung with the Hawks. The edge had to go to the Hawks in hitting and pitching with Teal getting 10 hits to 6 for Crystal Lake and Bri Cavin more than doubling their hurlers strikeout total, 10 to 4. Miranda Cavin was a one-person hitting machine, going four for four and scoring twice. Emily Hastings also had multiple hits, a 5th inning single and a 6th inning triple, both driving in runs. M. Cavin was key to keeping Crystal Lake off the board in the 3rd, throwing out a would-be base stealer and keeping the Waves top hitter in the on deck circle as the inning ended. After the Hawks had taken a 4 run lead in the top of the 5th, the Waves threatened to get back in the game but quick work in the outfield by Ali Michalik started a series of throws that caught another base runner unawares of Homers hustle and precision on defense. B. Cavin, as she had done all game, didn’t allow a hit to the Waves number five through nine batters to close out the contest.
Homer scored three times in the first inning against the Wheaton Wildcats and then coasted to the shutout victory (and the tournament championship!) behind the pitching of Elaine Heflin. Her 10 strikeout performance gave the Hawks staff a total of 57 K’s for 39 innings pitched on the weekend. Sarah Thompson, Emily Hastings and Dominique Roa each scored in the first frame as RBI singles by Hastings, Heflin and Miranda Cavin were enough to allow Heflin and Co. on defense to do their thing. After a shaky first inning the Hawks infield settled down and handled every chance afforded them. Another straying runner at second found herself on the wrong end of a catcher (Hastings) to 2nd (Michalik) to 3rd (Roa) putout to erase one of only two Wheaton hits. MVP honors for the championship game went to Hawks pitcher, Elaine "'L' Train" Heflin. The victory was Homers 2nd 16U tournament Championship to go with four others at 14U since joining the Hawks organization. Way to go girls. Teal is in Northlake this upcoming weekend (6/5 through 6/7) playing in the 16U Outburst Classic before taking a weekend (6/13 & 6/14) off from tournament play as they get ready for the NSA State Championships starting 6/19.
