Game Summaries for Outburst Classic. Enjoy! (and don't hesitate to pm or email me with corrections)
The Hawks opened pool play in the 8th Annual Outburst classic against the Norridge Reckless and recorded a 4-0 victory. The Reckless faced Alyssa Koziol in the circle and were able to get just one hit, a seventh inning lead off single. That and a 4th inning walk were the only Norridge girls to reach base against Koziol as she cruised to the complete game victory striking out ten along the way. She ended up facing just one batter over the minimum(21) as the Reckless girl who reached on the free pass was promptly picked off by Hawks catcher, Emily Hastings, to end the inning. Offensively the Hawks had eight hits with Dominique Roa and Hastings each picking up two. Madison Widhalm and pitcher Koziol were the games only run producers, as both girls drove in a pair. The defense was solid with 11 chances and no errors.
Game two on Saturday morning was a run rule shortened contest as the Hawks took all the sparkle out of the Oak Lawn Diamonds with a 13-0 pasting. Elaine Heflin was back in action in the circle to open Saturday’s schedule and delivered a no-hit performance for four innings of work to get the win. The defense again played without a miscue behind Heflin’s seven strikeout effort. Four different Hawks had multiple hits for the game; Maddi Doane (3H (2B), 3R, 1RBI), Miranda Cavin (2H, 2R, 1RBI), Emily Hastings (2H, 2R, 3RBI) and Dominique Roa (2H, 2RBI). Ali Michalik reached base all three plate appearances scoring twice. Also crossing the dish were Madison Widhalm (2), Sarah Thompson and Ashley Parenti.
Elaine Heflin, still fresh after her shortened outing, opened in the circle against the Hawks 3rd pool game opponent, the Lisle Slammers. She again went the distance in a six inning win, allowing no hits for the second straight game. Fourteen Slammers were the victim of strikeouts with the defense handling the other four outs without incident. The (6) hit parade was more of a small town variety rather than the spectacular Macy’s type. It was led by Emily Hastings (3 (2B)) and Miranda Cavin (2 (2B)) with the only other hit being a two run single by Madison Widhalm to close out the scoring for Homer in the 6th inning, settling on a final of 4-0.
The Bolingbrook Fury was the next opponent for the Hawks. Teal quickly turned the Rage into nothing more than a slight tantrum, dispatching them 6-1 for their 4th pool play victory. Emily Hastings provided all the offense Hawk’s pitcher, Alyssa Koziol, would need, driving in Sarah Thompson and Miranda Cavin with a double in the first inning. Besides the usual suspects, Maddi Doane, Cavin and Hastings, Ali Michalik and Ashley Parenti contributed hits in the Hawks two run 4th inning. Koziol allowed just two hits, striking out nine and issuing four free passes. Homer closed out pool play without committing a single error in the four games while allowing just three hits and 1 run! The win gave the Hawks a number one seed for bracket play on Sunday.
Bracket play opened with the Hawks facing the Fury for the second straight game and this time there wasn’t even a whimper as Elaine Heflin threw her third consecutive no hitter in the tournament. Eleven of the twelve outs in the run rule shortened game were by the strikeout with Dominique Roa making a nice play on the only ball put in play by the fury, a sharply hit line drive off the bat of the Fury number five hitter. The one through five positions in the lineup (Thompson (2), Doane (3), Cavin (2), Hastings (2) and Roa (2)) accounted for 11 of the 13 runs scored with the “mighty mites” (Michalik and Parenti) each scoring once. Sarah Thompson, Miranda Cavin, Dominique Roa and Alyssa Koziol each belted out two hits with Cavin and Hastings each picking up a triple.
On to the semifinals with Teal doing battle against a team they had yet to face, the Chicago Rockets. Alyssa Koziol got the nod in the circle and pitched the complete game win, her third of the tournament, going seven strong innings. The final of 6-2 was good enough to send the Hawks into their 5th consecutive championship game. They got there by limiting the Rockets to three hits and delivering their 4th error free game of the tournament. Koziol also was notable on offense, going 3 for 3 with two singles and a triple. But it was Miranda Cavin who supplied most of the fireworks, belting out two home runs , a three run blast in the first frame and a solo shot to open the fourth. Elaine Heflin and Maddi Doane also had two hits with Heflin picking up two RBI’s for her efforts. The Hawks, for the first time in seventeen games, came to bat trailing in the runs column as the Rockets were able to plate a run in the top half of the first inning which was quickly erased by Cavin’s shot in the home half of the inning.
The Hawks made the most of just three hits in the championship game against the Schaumburg Sluggers. Two of the hits came in Homer’s half of second as Emily Hastings led off with a solid single to left. Dominique Roa was up next and was just as quickly ushered down to first after getting hit by a pitch. A wild pitch had the runners move up 60 feet before Madison Widhalm executed a perfect safety squeeze, scoring Hastings from third with the games only run. Teal tried to add an insurance run in the sixth, but a one out single by Miranda Cavin followed by a walk to Hastings were all for naught as the runners were stranded there as the inning ended. But one run proved to be just enough for Teal ace, Elaine Heflin, who threw her fourth (!) consecutive no hitter of the tournament!!!!! She faced just one batter over the minimum, a seventh inning, one out walk. She ended up with 10 K’s for the game and 42 for the four games (21 innings), averaging 2 strikeouts per inning! She was helped greatly by her battery mate, Emily Hastings, who made a couple of nice plays on bunt attempts by the Sluggers to keep them off the bases and off the scoreboard. The win crowned Homer champions of their third 16U tournament of the Spring. The girls will be taking a weekend off from tournament play as they ready themselves for a tough field of teams at the NSA State Championships, June 19-21, in Orland Hills.
