The Hawks traveled to Carol Stream this past weekend to take part in the 2nd annual DuPage Ultimate Softball Tournament. Rain shortened the format to two pool games on Saturday followed by the single elimination round on Sunday. 16 Black continued its winning ways going a perfect 5-0 on the weekend, outscoring their opponents 52-5.
Game 1 was against the LT Blazers and the Hawks came away with a decisive 11-1 victory behind the 2 hit pitching performance of Tessa Kroll (1R, 2H, 5K, 2BB) in the 4 inning run-rule shortened game. Offensively, the Hawks came to hit, with four girls having a multi-hit game (Bri Cavin (2), Aubrey DeGroot (2), Kroll (2) and Kim Moreland (2)). Miranda Cavin and Kroll each scored twice and B. Cavin and Moreland racked up 3 RBI's each. Rachel O'Malley and Haley Henriksen also knocked in a pair each. With the Hawks trailing 1-0 after a half inning, Bri Cavin knotted the score on the first pitch she saw leading off the bottom of the first, driving a home run over the center fielder's head. The Hawks took the lead the next inning on a walk and two hits and never looked back as they cruised to an opening game "W".
Pool game 2 was also a run-rule shortened game, this time by a 14-0 margin over the Bartlett Hawks. Tessa Kroll again got the call in the circle and was credited with the win. Bri Cavin got her first work of the day, coming in to close out the last two innings. The Hawks bats were alive again, belting out 16 hits. Ashley Parenti, called up for the day from 14 Black, led the way with a perfect 3-3 performance at the dish, scoring once and driving in three runs. Marissa DeGroot also came up big with 3 singles, scoring all three times she reached base. Other girls with multiple hits included Aubrey DeGroot and Miranda Cavin (3B). M. Cavin, Kroll, Haley Henriksen and Maddi Doane eached crossed the dish twice in the win.
Sunday’s bracket play began on schedule with Black picking up right where they left off on Saturday…..hitting the ball and playing solid defense. Tessa Kroll (2R, 1H, 4K, 2BB) started her third consecutive game for the Hawks and earned the win going three strong innings before giving way to Bri Cavin in a non-save situation. For the Hawks, it was their third run-rule shortened contest of the tournament, averaging twelve runs per contest. The Hawks took the early lead in the 1st inning on another Cavin home run, this one by Hawks number three hitter, Miranda Cavin. Crystal Lake tied the game in the second on a walk, sacrifice bunt and base hit but the Hawks blew the game wide open in their half of the 2nd, batting around and then some. With the Waves playing short handed, the girls took advantage of the holes in the outfield defense, garnering seven hits and scoring six times to put the game out of reach. The Hawks threatened every inning, adding four more runs in the 3rd, making that 6 of the last 12 innings that the girls scored 4 or more runs. Bri Cavin continued her strong hitting with a triple and a single, scoring once and driving in two runs. Her “little” sister (henceforth known as “cavin”) also had a multi hit game. The bottom half of the order showed up big with four of the five girls having at least two hits (degroot (2), Henriksen (3), O’Malley (2) and Doane (2)).
The semi-finals pitted the Hawks against their pool opponent, the LT Blazers, with the Hawks prevailing in the seven inning affair by a margin of 3-1. Tessa Kroll started game and pitched two strong innings giving up one run on two 1st inning hits. She was able to get 5 of her 6 outs by the strikeout before being lifted at the start of the 3rd inning. Her relief, Bri Cavin, was credited with the win as she pitched five innings of shutout ball (2H, 6K) and sent the team into the Championship game almost single-handedly. Down by an identical 1-0 score as the day before, Cavin led off the bottom of the first and waited three pitches this time before tying the game with her second home run of the tournament. In the fifth she scored the go-ahead (and eventual winning) run after singling with two outs. Consecutive base hits from Aubrey DeGroot and Miranda Cavin were enough to push the run across, giving the Hawks their first lead of the game. The Hawks added an insurance run in the 6th on a walk and stolen base by Ashley London followed by an RBI single by Haley Henriksen. The defense was solid again, committing no errors in the field. The Hawks catching corps (Moreland, DeGroot and cavin) continued their strong play behind the dish with cavin throwing out one would be base stealer and picking off a wayward runner at first.
The Hawks found their groove again, unfortunately for their championship game opponent, the Kane County Xplosion and racked up thirteen runs. It only took four innings to settle the contest as the Hawks had multiple scoring innings in the 1st (2 runs), 2nd (3 runs)and 4th (8 runs) and left the bases loaded in their only non-scoring frame of the contest. In the circle, Bri Cavin pitched the complete game, earning the "W" as she allowed just two hits, struck out six and walked one Xplosion batter. Offensive highlight included every batter for 16 Black having at least one hit with Aubrey DeGroot (4), Miranda Cavin (3), Kim Moreland and Rachel O’Malley having at least two hits each. The Hawks played long ball (Cavin, cavin, Moreland – triple, DeGroot, cavin, O’Malley, Maddi Doane - double) and small ball (bunt singles by DeGroot, Ashley London, O’Malley) and everything in between en route to their second consecutive championship of the fall season. Congratulations ladies on your victories, they are well deserved as you continue to gel as a team. Your solid hitting and strong defense will prove handy as you face off against some very tough opponents in the Hawks, Sparks and St. Louis exposure events coming up this month.
