Patience no virtue for Portage April 2nd, 2007 It seemed like a stroke of coaching genius, but Jeff Smith insisted he had nothing to do with it. After his Portage softball team managed only three hits through the first five innings, the Times No. 7 Indians (1-0) broke out for four runs in the sixth to win their season opener 4-2 on Monday against No. 3 Lowell. In the early going, Portage practiced patience (only one batter took a first-pitch swing during her first at-bat.) In the sixth, the Indians got aggressive. Of their four RBIs, three came on the first-pitch swings of Sam Griffith, Olivia Leggett and Kristen Helmick — an approach Smith said he did not order. “I have faith in our kids,” he said. “If it’s there and you can be aggressive and drive it, drive it.”
