Fastpitch Teams Unite To Strike Out Cancer!
By Ashley Carlson at 3:48 p.m.
The Homer Hawks Fastpitch Softball Organization is dedicating this year’s College Exposure Event, October 8-10 in Elgin, to Cancer Awareness. Many of the members of the 86 participating teams, their coaches and parents have family members that have been affected by cancer and they are excited to work together to raise awareness and funds to help find a cure.
The Hawks organization has officially dedicated this College Exposure Tournament to raising money for the American Cancer Society to fight the many forms of cancer present today. They will be raising money through registration for the All-Star game, colored hair ribbons and through the purchase of $10 event t-shirts to be sold in advance of the event. Profits from all shirt sales will be donated to the American Cancer Society with a check presentation to be held at the All-Star Game.
The American Cancer Society saves lives and creates more birthdays by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back. Last year, more than 27,000 new patients and caregivers benefited from these services. This year, the Society hopes to assist 3,000 more people throughout Illinois.
The services provided by the American Cancer Society include transportation assistance to treatments; discounted lodging at hotels for patients who need to travel to receive care; insurance coverage assistance; resource matching and referrals; and cosmetic help such as a free wig or headwear for patients who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy.
Not only does the Society have free hands-on services to provide support to patients, they also provide a substantial amount of donor dollars to support cancer research. The American Cancer Society has $25 Million in active research grants In Illinois alone for 2010.
Donations to the American Cancer Society can be made directly via the Hawk’s website. To make a donation or for more information on how to support the Homer Hawks’ 2010 College Exposure Extravaganza Cancer Awareness weekend, please go to the Homer Hawks website at exposure.homerhawks.com/ or email Dave Betcher at dbetcher@marmonkeystone.com.
