May 20, 2011 Cary-Grove 3, Grayslake North 0: Emma Gaulke went 2-for-3 with a double and Winning pitcher Lindsay Efflandt (23-1) struck out five for No. 8 Cary-Grove (26-1).


Andrew 10, Kankakee 0: Winning pitcher Brooke Hofer (16-9) fanned eight and allowed just three hits in the win for Andrew (25-9). Gabby D’Oronzo had one double and two RBI while Katie Burke and Kelly Christner had two RBI each.


Carmel 9, Nazareth 3: Sally Snarski went 2-for-4 with five RBI to power Carmel. Kelly Dodge went 3-for-4 with two runs.


Crystal Lake Central 5, Prairie Ridge 3: Taylor Ward tossed a complete game, striking out 10 to notch the victory for Crystal Lake Central (23-7). Brittany York went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI and Sara McConnell went 1-for-3 with an RBI.


Curie 12, Longwood 2: Julia Negrete 2-for-4 with a triple, double, two RBI and one run to lead Curie (16-5) in the win. Ana Zapata went 1-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and run. Winning pitcher Mia Melendez struck out four.


Downers South 3, Glenbard West 2: Marissa Mersch went 3-for-4 with a double, run and stolen base for Downers South (24-6). Jenny Nichols went 2-for-4 with a double and Katy LaCivita went 2-for-3 with a game-winning RBI. Aleisha Bozek (10-3) was the winning pitcher.


Elk Grove 3, Marengo 2: Winning pitcher Dani Goranson fanned 14 in the win for Elk Grove (28-4).

Beecher 6, Peotone 4: Mallory Ivers fanned four in the complete-game win for No. 5 Beecher (30-1).


Sandburg 4, Bartlett 0: Winning pitcher Laura Olson (15-4) went the distance and fanned 10 for No. 6 Sandburg (24-6) at the Stone City tournament. Olson also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Amanda Barna hit three doubles.


St, Charles North 5, Lockport 0: Amanda Ciran struck out five in a complete-game win for No. 9 St. Charles North (26-2, 18-1) at Stone City. Sydney Russell added a triple and two RBI.

Providence 8-0, Neuqua Valley 2-11 — After the Wildcats dropped the opener, Marisa Donnelly (5-0) helped Neuqua bounce back in game two by pitching a one-hit shutout, striking out six and allowing one walk in the shortened five-inning game. Leigh Nebendahl was 3-for-3, including a home run, and four RBI, while Kat Widup went 2-for-3 with three RBI for Neuqua (18-9). Jena Boudrea (10-9) was the game one loser.

Metea Valley 2-17, Oswego East 3-7 — Anna Petersen ended the game with a grand slam and had five RBI total for the Mustangs (15-13). Jenn Faassen drove in three for Metea in the second game.

Naperville North 1-1, Glenbard West 0-2 — The Huskies won the opener by scoring the lone run of the game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Caitlyn Warren. Emily Dieckmann (14-7) pitched the three-hit shutout for North. Warren homered in the nightcap for the lone run.

There is no doubt the Naperville Central softball team is ready for the playoffs.
The Redhawks used 12 hits to beat West Aurora 9-1, in the Class 4A West Aurora regional semifinal Tuesday.
“I think we are in it to win it and very motivated,” Naperville Central’s Maddi Doane said. “We had a great game today, and we want to keep it going.”
The win moved Naperville Central to 23-10 and they will play either No. 6 Lyons or No. 11 Oswego East (who meet Wednesday) in the regional final Saturday at 11 a.m.
“I’ve coached basketball for 23 years and softball for 28 years, and I don’t believe I’ve ever coached against Lyons Township or Oswego East, so it should be interesting,” Naperville Central coach Andy Nussbaum said.
Naperville Central upped the lead from 5-1 to 9-1 in the sixth, when the Redhawks scored four runs on five hits from Jill Andreoni, Kelsey Gonzalez, Doane, Katie Walker and Keegan Hayes.
Doane also hit a first-pitch two-run home run (her third of the year) over the right field fence with one out in the fifth that put the Redhawks up 5-1. Naperville Central also scored twice in the third, highlighted by an RBI double from Griffin. The Redhawks also scored a run in the third on a West Aurora error.
Nicole Kappelman reached base four times and Gonzalez, Griffin, Doane, Walker and Hayes each posted a pair of hits.
“It was nice to see everyone step up, even once we got a good lead,” pitcher Alyssa Wunderlich said. “We never gave up and kept fighting every inning.”
West Aurora scored its run in the fifth, when Franny Evischi led off with a walk. Her pinch runner, Gianna Drager, moved to second on Ally Wazer’s single and scored on pinch hitter Alexis Harkless’ RBI single. It was the only walk Central pitcher Wunderlich gave up, and two of the three singles allowed. She was throwing a perfect game in the first four innings and ended up with seven strikeouts.
“I feel better with a lead, and I know (Wunderlich) pitches better with a lead,” Nussbaum said.
The Blackhawks ended the season 6-26 overall. They lost to DuPage Valley Conference opponent Naperville Central three times this year.
“I’m very proud of my players,” West Aurora coach Sara Nagy said. “They were pumped to play (Naperville Central)...we never gave up. You would think with the record we have there would be negativity, but this team hung tight the whole season. I’m proud of every single girl on the team.”

Richards’ Tobin no-hits Hyde Park

For its first 28 games, Richards beat every team that crossed its path.
Either stars or role players, they did whatever was necessary. The team’s power trinity of Brianna LeBeau, Hannah Jenkins and Kailie Tobin answered the call. “We’ve had great team chemistry the whole year,” LeBeau said.
Then for two games every bounce or flare that previously went their way suddenly didn’t and the Bulldogs lost two consecutive games. It was not the direction they wanted to be heading in with the state tournament looming.
“Sometimes after you lose, you can learn things about yourself and what you need to do to get better,” Tobin said. “When you start the playoffs, to go in undefeated, that would put a lot more pressure and expectations on you.”
The top seed in the Class 4A Morton Sectional, the Bulldogs pounded out 21 hits and rode Tobin’s no-hitter to a 20-0 shutout of Hyde Park in a Class 4A De La Salle Regional semifinal at Maria Tuesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs advance to play the winner of Wednesday’s De La Salle-Morton game for the regional championship Saturday.
Antioch pitcher Olivia Duehr ended the Bulldogs’ magical run in a 3-1, eight-inning victory in the Steel City Shootout Saturday. “We just didn’t hit that game,” Jenkins said. On Monday, the Bulldogs committed seven errors and lost 8-1 to Lincoln-Way West in a makeup game.
“We didn’t have any fire that game,” Richards coach Julie Folliard said. “Today I saw the energy, the commitment that we had most of the year.”
Tobin put on a stunning all-around display. She struck out 12 and allowed just one base runner, a walk to open the third, of the 16 batters she faced. She ran her record to 7-0. She was also spectacular at the plate, going 4-of-5 with two doubles, a triple and a home run and three RBI.
Jenkins complemented her by driving in six runs on a perfect 3-for-3. Her grand slam highlighted a seven-run, seven-hit third inning. The Bulldogs (29-2) scored 16 runs in the second and third innings combined. LeBeau, who’s 22-2 on the year in the circle, added two hits and two runs.
Junior Chelsea Williams took the loss for the Thunderbirds (14-2).

Lockport edges Providence

Lockport beat Providence 2-1 in 11 innings Wednesday in a Class 4A Providence Regional semifinal that had a very unspectacular ending.
Porters senior Jenn Bond drew a bases-loaded, walk-off walk.
Sounds undramatic, anyway. But there was plenty of drama going on in Bond’s head.
With the count 2-and-1, she had no more than a split second to gauge an ever-so-slightly high fastball delivered by Providence left-hander Amanda Wilson.
The battler in her wanted to swing.
The smart hitter in her knew better.
“Usually high pitches are my weakness,” Bond said. “I was really just happy that I laid off of it. I wouldn’t have gotten the hit I wanted.”
Plus, she got the call, for ball three. The next pitch was low, and Bond was sky-high trotting to first base as teammate Sam DeMasi was touching home plate.
It brought to an end a 2011 adventure between Lockport and Providence that saw the two teams battle to a darkness-ended 2-2 tie April 2 at the Providence Invitational, then go 11 more innings Wednesday before a winner finally emerged.
Lockport (25-10-1) is to play No. 5 Marian Catholic (29-5) on 11 a.m. Saturday for the regional title.
The Porters had to rally from a 1-0 deficit after Providence’s Kelly Engwall cracked a solo home run in the top of the second against starter Amanda Oberc. Oberc (3 hits, 9 strikeouts) blanked the Celtics over the next six innings before Kelly Bowler came on in relief to eventually record the win.
The Porters tied the game in the sixth when DeMasi led off with a slap-bunt single, was sacrificed to second by Allie Phad and scored on a ground single into right by Brianna Carney.
Porters catcher Lia Romeo, who sparkled on snagging two foul pops behind the plate, made a huge play in the top of the 10th, picking a Providence runner off third with one out.
DeMasi led off the bottom of the 11th with an infield single, went to second on a sac bunt by Phad and beat a throw to third on a chop in front of the plate by Romeo. Carney was intentionally walked.
The game-ending pass to Bond was Wilson’s first non-intentional walk during a brilliant performance in which she allowed just six hits and struck out eight. In the sixth, she made a nice play on a squeeze bunt attempt and threw a runner out at the plate. Her last strikeout came in the 11th, a three-pitch effort with one out and the bases loaded.
“This is definitely the game we wanted all year,” Wilson said. “This was it for our seniors, so I just tried to do everything I could.”

May 28, 2011 View Gallery Beating Marian Catholic 7-0 on Saturday at Providence was all about winning a Class 4A regional title for everyone in a Lockport uniform.

For Porters junior Taylor Weissenhofer, it also was about taking care of unfinished business.

On April 28, Weissenhofer threw six shutout innings against Marian Catholic only to be pulled before the seventh inning started. Marian rallied for two runs in the seventh to prevail 2-1.

Saturday, Weissenhofer was given the ball again and this time she was able to seal the deal. She blanked the Spartans on just four hits, striking out 11 while walking none.

On offense, Allie Phad (3-for-4, 3 RBI) and Tierney Bottino (2-for-4) led the way for the Porters (26-10-1), who advance to Wednesday’s Class 4A Lockport Sectional semifinal against Sandburg (26-6).

Weissenhofer’s exit the first time Lockport and Marian played had nothing to do with how she was pitching.

“Those were those six games of seven that we lost,” Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec said. “We were trying to do something to help us get out of it. We had said that we were going to make a change (in pitchers before the end) no matter what.”

Weissenhofer was told shortly before Saturday’s game that she was going to get the start.

“I was a little bit nervous,” she said, “but I did what I needed to do.”

And then some.

After surrendering a leadoff single to Rebecca Gray in the bottom of the first, Weissenhofer struck out the next five batters. The Spartans didn’t produce another hit until Rachel Glenn led off the bottom of the fifth with a single.

The Porters, meanwhile, produced at least one baserunner in every inning. They scored one run in the first when Sam DeMasi singled and eventually came in on an overthrow as she was trying to steal third.

The hardest-hit ball of the day came off the bat of Porters senior Phad, who after a single by Melissa Stoch lined an RBI double to dead-center field. Ashley London also contributed an RBI single during the two-run fifth that made it 3-0. Phad added a two-run single in a three-run sixth, while Bottino skied an RBI triple to the fence in left field in the seventh.

“I just tried to relax and not think up there,” Phad said of her big day. “The last time we played them we were having bad times and in a slump and it was bad weather, but we were definitely ready to come out and play today.”
