He savored every minute of it. Nussbaum’s Naperville Central Redhawks beat Stagg 4-0 in the second game of a doubleheader in Naperville, giving the 28th-year coach his 500th career victory. Advertisement Minutes after taking photos with players and his own children, Nussbaum was still basking in the glow. “I love this job,” said Nussbaum, laughing afterward that “with respect to Mayor Daley, I have the best job.” Nussbaum is the fifth softball coach from DuPage County to reach 500 wins, joining Bill Voves (Glenbard South), Brenda Whitesell (Hinsdale South), Tom Babyar (York) and Ron Havelka (Downers Grove South). Nussbaum has two state tournament appearances on his resume and one DuPage Valley Conference championship. He can clinch at least a share of a second DVC title with a win Monday at West Chicago. Nussbaum was all of 25 his first season as Redhawks coach — “before I even met my wife.” His wife, Wendy, and six of their seven children were on hand Saturday for the celebration. “You think of all the teams and games, all the things that went into it,” Nussbaum said. “This is pretty satisfying. I love the game, I love the kids. I hope they’ve enjoyed it as much as I have.” Kelsey Gonzalez singled in the Redhawks’ first two runs and played a sparkling shortstop. She knew how significant this win was to her coach, and for that matter the Naperville Central players. “It’s a huge accomplishment for him,” Gonzalez said. “He’s been working at this for a long time. He reminded us Friday that this is a big day for him. It’s awesome to be a part of it.” Kristina Vizza (8-3), starting for the first time in a week, threw one of her best outings of the year. The junior lefty struck out eight in 2-hitting Stagg (24-5) for her second shutout. “I felt like everything was working, especially my dropball,” Vizza said. No. 7 Naperville Central (20-7) lost the first game 2-1, two errors in the bottom of the sixth leading to Stagg’s go-ahead run. The Redhawks played a crisp Game 2, though. Gonzalez alone made 9 putouts. In the fourth she made a leaping grab of a sinking liner in short left field, and one out later she ranged deep into the hole at shortstop to gun the runner at first. “We had a lot to prove after that first game,” Gonzalez said. “Good to get that second one in.” Stagg pitcher Leah LaSota (19-3) started both ends of the doubleheader, and the Redhawks solved her with a second crack. Nicole Kappelman singled and scored on a Gonzalez single in the first inning, and successive singles by Kappelman, Keegan Hayes and Gonzalez in the third made it 2-0. Hayes singled in Dierking in the fourth and Dierking’s sacrifice fly scored Maddi Doane in the fifth. Kappelman was 3-for-3 and reached base 4 times, with Hayes and Gonzalez both singling twice. “That was one of Vizza’s better games, if not her best game of the year,” Nussbaum said. “It was a pretty satisfying win against a very good team. We bounced back well.” Read more: www.dailyherald.com/article/20110514/sports/705149888/#ixzz1MQmyEUoK

That’s when Barb Bostian’s Conant softball team won the first Mid-Suburban League championship game. Advertisement But 37 years later, Smith and the retired Hall of Fame coach Bostian have something in common. They are the coaches of the school’s only championship softball teams. Conant junior Briana Cavin threw a 2-hitter with 11 strikeouts while her sophomore sister and catcher Miranda (2-for-3) had the game-winning RBI triple as the Cougars blanked visiting Fremd 2-0 on a chilly and wet Saturday afternoon in Hoffman Estates. “It took every little piece coming together,” said Smith, who was 2 years old when the Cougars defeated Wheeling in the first MSL title game. “The chemistry between Briana and Miranda is something words can’t explain.” Conant (24-1, 13-2) clinched the MSL West crown, grabbing a two-game lead over 2010 champ Fremd (21-4-1, 11-4) and 2½ over Barrington (22-10, 10-4) with one game to play. The Cougars also set the single-season school record for wins on Saturday, surpassing Smith’s 2005 team that was 23-12. “We worked our hearts out to get this,” said Miranda Cavin, whose big one-out triple in the bottom of the sixth inning scored senior shortstop Allie Bauch, who had produced an infield single and stole second. “This was our goal.” Miranda Cavin’s triple was Conant’s fifth and final hit off Fremd junior Rachel Doering (11-3), who struck out six. Miranda Cavin scored the second run of the inning when junior Kim Jacobson reached on an error with one out. “Oh my God, that (triple) felt amazing,” added Miranda. “ Briana did really well at clipping the corners and she had really good defense behind her all the way.” Briana Cavin’s 19th win is also a single-season school record. “That was very exciting,” said Briana, who has already committed to Wisconsin-Green Bay. “It’s really great that we were able to accomplish something that hasn’t been done for such a long time at our school and now we can put a new banner up.” Conant’s other hits in the game were back-to-back singles by Sarah Thompson and Paige Ward to lead off the bottom of the fifth. However, Doering got out of the jam on a sacrifice bunt and 2 strikeouts. “Rachel pitched a great game,” said Fremd coach Jim Weaver. “We had a chance in the first inning (two runners on base and one out) but we couldn’t push across a run. “I think that would have made a difference in the game.” One of those runners on base in the first was sophomore Mandi Matsumoto, who singled to left. She had the Vikings’ only 2 hits in the game. “Offensively, I was happy, no complaints,” Weaver added. “I know it may sound strange saying that when we were shut out, but I thought we had good swings all day. “Defensively there were a couple of plays we should have made. We still have a little work to do. We’ve got to tighten up the defense.” Conant will visit Elk Grove (26-3, 14-1) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. to decide the 38th annual Mid-Suburban League softball championship. “We knew it would be tough playing Fremd — because of where they are and where they have been,” Smith said. “But our girls knew what they wanted do all season. This was their goal. This is a special group and I could not be more proud of them.” Read more: www.dailyherald.com/article/20110514/sports/705149848/#ixzz1MRG27vYN

By Tim Tierney May 17, 2011 View Gallery The SouthWest Suburban Blue softball game Tuesday between Joliet Central and host Lockport was a contrast in programs: one that has reached the top and the other starting to build a foundation. Two-time Class AA state champion Lockport ended its next-to-last home game with a solo dinger by Jessica Kubinski for a 10-0 six-inning victory. Joliet Central has two victories in its first varsity season since 1993, when Central and West were combined. “We’re building from the ground up,’’ Joliet Central coach Erin Douglas said. “I was happy with today. The score doesn’t show it, but the last time we played them the score was significantly different. That shows a lot of heart and desire by the girls to keep improving.’’ Douglas shouts encouragement from the third-base box or the dugout, using game situations to continue teaching. “Bases loaded, ball right to you, force at three’’ she pointed out after a miscue. “I told their coach from the first time we saw them in Joliet to now, there’s 100 percent improvement,’’ Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec said. “They’re doing a good job. It’s going to take time.’’ Brianna Carney sparked the Lockport offense, going 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Alyssa Visvardis had a two-run single in the second and Tierney Bottino contributed an RBI double in the fifth. “It was a slower pitcher, so I had to wait back a little bit,’’ Carney said. “I made my adjustments at the plate as best I could.’’ Carney opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first and added RBI singles in the second and fifth innings. “A couple of weeks ago we started putting her in the lineup,’’ Chovanec said. “She’s been a hot bat for us. I hope she keeps going the next couple weeks.’’ Lockport starter Kelly Bowler and Amanda Oberc both threw three innings with six strikeouts apiece. Oberc yielded the only hit, a single by Kiara Collins in the fourth, and then fanned six of the last seven batters. “I think my curveball was working really well today, I was hitting the corners,’’ Bowler said. Lockport (22-8-1, 9-4) completes its Blue season Thursday at Lincoln-Way East, with a victory giving the Porters at least a tie for second place. Lockport’s home finale is today against Stagg, the Porters’ Senior Night. “Stagg is always a good team, and I disagreeistant coach (Rachel Gensch) went to Stagg,’’ Chovanec said. “It’s a rivalry a little bit.’’ Joliet Central (2-21, 0-12) finishes its Blue season with a doubleheader Thursday against Bolingbrook. Central’s regular-season finale is Saturday at Plainfield North. © 2011 Sun-Times Media, LLC. All rights reserved. This material may not be copied or distributed without permission. But it was a sophomore who delivered. Ashley London went 2-for-3 with three RBI as the Porters toppled visiting Stagg 4-1 in a nonconference game between old SouthWest Suburban Conference rivals Wednesday afternoon. The win was the 10 in 11 games for Lockport (23-8-1), which had lost six of seven games in a midseason slump to fall off the radar. However, the Porters look to be back now, thanks to key contributions from people like London. “Ashley has done that all year for us big time,” Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec said. “She is our second highest RBI person on the team behind (senior catcher) Lia Romeo, and adjusts well at the plate.” London, a sophomore second baseman who stands 5-foot-1, did that in the bottom of the third inning. With the Porters trailing 1-0, she came up with no outs and the bases loaded. After falling behind 0-2 in the count, she knocked the fifth pitch of the at-bat up the middle, past the drawn in infield, for a 2-run single. “Before I went up to the plate, I was watching how she (Stagg senior pitcher Lea LaSota) was pitching to the other hitters,” London said. “I noticed she was going outside and the first time I was up, I had the chance and didn’t get it (striking out on a high outside pitch in the first). So the next time I was more determined and more confident.” After a bunt single by Jenn Bond, Tierney Bottino lined an RBI single to center to make it 3-0. London added to the lead in fourth, when she battled to a full-count before lashing a two-out RBI single to center. That scored Sam DeMasi (2-for-4), who had a bunt single to start the inning and was sacrificed to second by senior first baseman Allie Phad. Romeo went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles for the Porters. The pitching combo of Kelly Bowler, who improved to 7-4 by going the first four innings, and Amanda Oberc did the rest. The senior right-handers combined on a five-hitter, with four strikeouts and two walks. “We hit a little speed bump in the middle of the season,” Bowler said. “But it’s good to come out of it playing Porter ball again.” The loss prevented Stagg (26-6) from reaching 27 wins for the first time since 1999. The Chargers have lost five of 10, after opening 21-1. LaSota (21-6), took the loss. The senior righty went the distance, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits, with a hit batter, three walks and seven strikeouts. Stagg scored in the top of the third. Senior second baseman Victoria Dellorto (3-for-3, walk) led off with a bloop single to right, moved to second on a LaSota sacrifice, and scored on a one-out single to center by senior shortstop Faith Johnson. But the Chargers stranded eight runners in the game. “We didn’t feel like we played our best and you can’t beat a team like Lockport unless you play your best,” Stagg coach Missy Mason said. “But that’s why we play teams like Lockport, to get ready for the postseason. “This game wasn’t even a scheduled crossover, but we wanted to play them. Now we hope to be back here (at Lockport) for the sectional.” © 2011 Sun-Times Media, LLC. All rights reserved. This material may not be copied or distributed without permission. Moments after Glenbard North beat Naperville Central, 4-3, in eight innings in Naperville, word got around quickly that Naperville North beat West Chicago, 9-0. That means West Chicago is now 10-3 in the DVC with one more conference game left to play against Wheaton Warrenville South. Both Glenbard North and Naperville Central ended league play at 10-4. If the Wildcats — last year’s champs — beat the Tigers, they win the conference outright. If they lose, there will be a three-way tie for the title. “(The title race) is coming down right to the end, just like last year,” Glenbard North coach Josh Sanew said. “But it’s fun. It’s good for the conference.” This was Naperville Central’s second loss in as many games in extra innings. The Redhawks fell victim to West Chicago 1-0 in nine innings Monday. With the game tied at 3 in the bottom of the eighth, Glenbard North’s Sydney Benz hit a single and moved to second on another single from Alyssa Jasinski. Benz scored on a two-out RBI single from the hot-hitting bat of pitcher Lilly Fecho. The Redhawks had a great chance in the bottom of the inning when Keegan Hayes led off with a single. Her pinch-runner, Kayla Skinner, got to second on a Katie Walker sacrifice bunt. With one out, Alyssa Wunderlich hit the ball right at Fecho, who quickly turned around and threw the ball to second base, where Skinner was off the bag and was tagged out to end it. “It’s disappointing,” Naperville Central coach Andy Nussbaum said. “There were things we did really well and other things we didn’t do really well. Major mistakes and lack of execution.” Naperville Central (20-9, 10-4) tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Laura Dierking led off with a single and moved to second on a Nicole Kappelman single in the next at-bat. Dierking went to third and Kappelman second on a wild pitch. An out later, Glenbard North attempted to intentionally walk Kelsey Gonzalez, but one of the pitches in the process went wild and Dierking slapped home plate safely. Kappelman moved to third on the wild pitch, Gonzalez was eventually walked and the next batter, Meghan Griffin, was hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded with one out. As Maddi Doane struck out for the second out, Kappelman headed for home on what was first thought of as a dropped third strike. Glenbard North’s catcher, Alexis Simone, quickly recovered the ball and tagged Kappelman for the third out of the inning. Earlier, Glenbard North (18-4, 10-4) scored first in the first on Jasinski’s sacrifice fly. Naperville Central came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning, thanks to a Glenbard North error that allowed Gonzalez (who singled) and Griffin (who was hit by a pitch) to score. The Panthers got the lead in the fourth on Fecho’s two-run home run to right field. Both teams finished with seven hits. Wunderlich, the Redhawks’ pitcher, finished with 11 strikeouts. Fecho finished with three of the Panthers’ seven hits. “It’s exciting to come out here and face a good pitcher,” Fecho said.

Conant keeps Elk Grove in check, claim MSL BY DICK QUAGLIANO
May 19, 2011 Conant’s Bri Cavin kept No. 1 Elk Grove in check while her teammates went yard twice as the Cougars bounced the Grenediers 5-1 Thursday at the Mid-Suburban League championship game at Elk Grove.
Cavin fanned eight and kept Elk Grove (27-4) off balance allowing just four hits as Conant (26-2) avenged a 6-2 loss to Elk Grove back in April. It was Conant’s first MSL softball title since 1976.
“There was no pressure on us,” said Cavin, who is 21-2. “Especially with Hilary’s (O’Donnell) homer. With some runs it made it easier on me
O’Donnell’s homer was one of 12 hits off of Elk Grove ace Dani Goranson (24-4). Seven of those hits went for extra bases.
“Our hitting has been down the past few games,” Conant coach CathyAnn Smith said. “The girls said they needed to bring it today and they did.”
Cavin got all the hits and runs she needed in the Cougars first at bat when they strung together three consecutive hits.
O’Donnell had a 2-2 count on Goranson when she fouled off four consecutive pitches. She then delivered a 200-foot blast to center, the first of her career, to make it 1-0.
“It was amazing,” said O’Donnell, who was 3-for-4 and also had a double.
“I was just looking to stay in there and make contact. It was a solid hit.”
Allie Bauch followed O’Donnell with a double off the left-field fence. She then scored on a single by Miranda Cavin (2-for-4).
Elk Grove (26-4) had their chance to get back in the game in the fifth.
The Grenediers closed to 2-1 on Devan Parkison’s double and had runners on second and third with two outs. Instead of pitching around Goranson, who is hitting over .500, with a 3-0 count, Briana Cavin went after her and got her to pop to short on. 3-2 pitch to end the threat.
“I have been playing against her for a long time,” Bri Cavin said. “I knew what to throw to her to get her out.”
Conant put the game away in the 6th. Sarah Thompson reached on an infield single with two out. Paige Ward (2-for-3) then followed with a two-run blast to right. Consecutive doubles by Rachel O’Malley and Kailee Pasbrig made it 5-1.
“It is very exciting for the girls,” Smith said.

They have done everything for us.” O’Donnell (3-for-4) did plenty for the MSL West champs. She also had the Cougars’ final hit, a double to right-center to lead off the seventh. “It was like a lot of pressure was taken off when Hilary hit that first homer,” said Cougars ace Briana Cavin (21-2), who put the pressure on Elk Grove (27-4) all the way while tossing a 4-hitter with 8 strikeouts. “A lot of people told us we weren’t supposed to win, so the pressure wasn’t really on us in the first place. It was on them.” Paige Ward applied more pressure in the sixth when the Cougars’ senior first baseman belted a 2-out, 2-run homer to right, sparking a 3-run inning. Freshman Rachel O’Malley followed with a double down the left-field line and came home on pinch hitter Kailee Pasbrig’s double to right-center for a 5-1 lead. That was plenty for Cougars ace Briana Cavin, who gave up her only run in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Grens catcher Devan Parkison. First baseman Becca Walz had started the inning by reaching on an error. “The nerves got to everyone,” Walz said about the big game. “Now we’ve got to get ready for the postseason. Conant definitely showed it could hit.” Seven of the Cougars’ 10 hits were for extra bases. After O’Donnell’s blast in the first, Allie Bauch followed with a double to left-center and came home on an RBI single to center by catcher Miranda Cavin (2-for-4). Ward also had a double to lead off the second inning. “Our hitting hasn’t been all that great lately but the girls said they were going to bring their bats for this game,” Smith said. “They sure came alive and they did it against one of the best pitchers (junior Dani Goranson who is 24-4) in the state. So kudos to them.” In addition to Parkison’s RBI single, the Grens other hits were a single by Jessica Balzano (third inning), a single by Tori Liewergen (fifth inning) and a double to lead off the fourth by Goranson. Goranson defeated the Cougars 6-2 on April 11. “It was two teams who are having terrific seasons,” said Elk Grove Hall of Famer Ken Grams, who was coaching in his 17th title game. “Somebody had to win, somebody had to lose. “Hopefully we can play them again in the state tournament. Briana (Cavin) is terrific pitcher and she had an excellent day. It’s good to see pitchers who throw like her.” Cavin increased her single-season school record to 21 wins. “We were excited about this game as soon as we got on the bus coming here,” said Briana Cavin, whose sophomore catcher is her sister Miranda. “When Bri and Miranda are in tune, I don’t think anyone can stop them,” Smith said. “They are amazing to watch.” O’Donnell said it felt amazing to belt her first home run of the season. “I was just looking to make solid contact,” said O’Donnell, who fouled off four pitches after a 2-2 count. “We knew this was a battle of the best two teams in the conference and we both wanted to win. I’m so proud of my team.” So was Smith. “Hilary was our leader all day — in the dugout, on the field,” the coach said. “All day, the excitement was building for this game. We knew it would take every piece working together. The girls had it going from the beginning to the end. They have a special pride and I could not be prouder of them.” Read more: www.dailyherald.com/article/20110519/sports/705199737/#ixzz1MtlHtoYJ
