The first time was a 1-0 decision April 26, and the second was a 2-1 win for the Redhawks on Wednesday in Naperville in DuPage Valley Conference action. “We are getting good pitching, we are playing good defense and — I’m not going to complain — a win is a win,” Naperville Central coach Andy Nussbaum said. “Whether it be by one or three or five. We are just glad to get a win.” The Blackhawks (4-16, 0-8), who began their second round of DVC action against the Redhawks, have lost four conference games by one run. “We had base runners on, but couldn’t get that one clutch hit to push a run through,” West Aurora coach Sara Nagy said. “That’s pretty typical of our season. We get them on, but we can’t get them in. We have some seniors, but we are young. They’ve learned a lot this year, and I’m very proud of them.” “They are going to beat someone the second time around,” Nussbaum added on the Blackhawks. “I’m glad we don’t have to play them in the regular season again. They are a good team.” The Blackhawks scored first in the first when leadoff batter Alyssa Reimers reached base on an error. She moved to second on a Christina Hunger sacrifice bunt and scored on Franny Evischi’s RBI single. The Redhawks (15-4, 6-1) remained scoreless until the fourth, when Maddi Doane hit a one-out double. Katie Walker’s RBI double tied the game, and pinch runner Kayla Skinner moved to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Nussbaum called in pinch-hitter Laura Dierking. She then rewarded his decision with an RBI single that allowed Skinner to score. This was Dierking’s first game-winning hit of the season. “Laura hits well against this kind of pitcher’s speed,” Nussbaum said. “I was just hoping it would go through. Two-out hits are huge. That was a big, big hit for us at a good time. She didn’t play Monday, she didn’t play Tuesday, and she had no idea she was going to bat.” “I had no idea the opportunity was going to come, but I’m glad it did,” Dierking added. “We are just glad to beat them again.” Against West Aurora the first time, Naperville Central pitcher Alyssa Wunderlich (8-3) allowed just a single hit. The second time, she allowed two, along with seven strikeouts and two walks. Evischi, West Aurora’s pitcher, gave up seven hits, six strikeouts and three walks. “She was fantastic today,” Nagy said. “To keep a high-quality batting team (like Naperville Central) to just two runs was fantastic.”

View Gallery Prior to their DuPage Valley Conference game on Friday, host West Aurora gave flowers to Naperville North players in honor of Mother’s Day.
The Huskies returned the nice gesture by committing five costly errors early in the game that led to a 5-2 Blackhawks victory — their first in league play this season.
North (8-9, 3-6) committed four errors in the first inning that led to two unearned runs and West Aurora was able to hold on.
“We didn’t come out to play the way we needed to today. When you get down in an early hole, the offense can’t do the things that they need to do,” Huskies coach Jerry Kedziora said. “They took advantage of our errors and that’s what teams in our conference do. They take advantage of mistakes.”
After LaRi Mitchell got on via an error by the shortstop, Alyssa Reiners came up and hit a grounder to third. The third baseman threw the ball wide and it hit the fence.
The first baseman tried to gun down Mitchell sprinting for third after retrieving the overthrow but it was high and it bounced off the third baseman’s glove, allowing the run to score and Reiners went to third.
Christina Hunger executed a perfect squeeze bunt to score Reiners but the throw to first was wide, allowing Hunger to reach base.
“We came over the hump today, so to of speak, and we finally put a complete game together,” Blackhawks coach Sarah Nagy said. “After the first inning the momentum was on our side and that kept us going.”
West Aurora tacked on runs in the third, fifth, and sixth innings. Mitchell led off the sixth with a triple down the left-field line and Reiners followed with an RBI groundout.
Pitcher Franny Evischi had one of her best outings of the season for West Aurora (5-16, 1-8). Evischi went the distance, giving up two runs on eight hits while striking out two. She also ended North shortstop Sammy Marshall’s 48-game hitting streak. Marshall went 0-for-4 with two flyouts and two groundouts.
“This season we have had so many close games and it feels good to finally finish one off with a win,” Evischi said. “We played them before and we lost pretty bad so winning today gives us a lot of confidence.”
On April 20, the Huskies downed the Blackhawks 6-0 in Naperville.
North finally got on the board in the sixth thanks to a single by Tara Degl’Innocenti and two wild pitches. They added their final run in the seventh as Caitlyn Warren hit a solo blast over the left-center field fence.
Warren went 3-for-3 on the day with the home run and two singles.
Both teams wore special pink shirts as the game marked the first annual DuPage Valley Conference Women’s Awareness game. Teams across the DVC will support a local charity agency this month by donating their time. All the teams in the DVC will be wearing the special jerseys for at least one game.

Ryndak, Downers North roll by Oak Park BY PATRICK Z. MCGAVIN
May 6, 2011 Dale Ryndak is like an eraser. Every time she gets into trouble, she blots it out as if it never existed.
The gifted Downers Grove North freshman overcame a rough start to scatter seven hits and drilled a momentum-changing three-run home run in leading the visiting No. 3 Trojans past Oak Park-River Forest 9-1 Friday afternoon.
Ryndak pitched a complete game, striking out three and surrendering two walks in running her record to 10-1.
The Huskies seized the early lead after catcher Annie Ford drilled a double into right field that scored first baseman Maureen Puccetti in the bottom of the first inning. “That’s been a problem for me this year, where I almost let up on girls once I get ahead of them in the count, and I have to come back and get them out,” Ryndak said.
Ryndak got a strikeout to avoid further damage. Then she took control from the plate.
Designated hitter Sam Yaeger locked the score up in the Trojans’ second inning with a sharp single into left field. With two outs and two runners on, Ryndak smashed a first-pitch fastball over the left-field fence against Huskies starter Sarafina Andreoli.
The blast was Ryndak’s third home run of the season.
“I’m usually pretty aggressive going after the first pitch,” she said. “I was a little surprised it went over because I didn’t swing all the way through, but I hit it perfect, so that was probably the difference.”
The lead also settled Ryndak on the mound. Oak Park-River Forest was able to string together some hits. Ryndak continually pitched herself out of the big inning. in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Huskies collected three hits and loaded the bases. Ryndak coaxed two pop outs and a line drive to end the inning.
“That’s what she’s done the whole year,” Downers North coach Mark Margo said. “She’s a great competitor, and I thought her changeup was really working today.”
Downers North (19-2, 6-1 West Suburban Silver) put the game out of reach with a four-run fifth inning extended by two Huskies’ errors and separate runs scored on a wild pitch and passed ball.
Kendall Ryndak (2-for-4), Dale’s older sister, smashed a double down the third-base line that scored centerfielder Rachel Bradley, who led off the inning with a single. The Trojans sent nine batters to the plate in the fifth. Dale Ryndak punctuated her all-around performance with a run-scoring single in the seventh inning.
The Huskies (6-16, 3-4), Class 4A supersectional finalists a year ago, remained snake-bitten. “We’ve never had a losing record in the years I’ve been coaching here, and right now, we don’t have enough games left to get back to .500,” OPRF coach Mel Kolbusz said.
“Sarafina didn’t pitch that badly. We’re just not doing the little things out there, leaving runners on, the walks, the errors and it’s showing out there in the result.”

Softball | No. 3 Downers Grove North sweeps Lincoln-Way Central ShareNew(0) By James Nokes Special to the Tribune 7:58 p.m. CDT, May 7, 2011 ct-spt-0508-prep-soft-dg-north-lw-cen20110507 Kendall Ryndak does not include backing off of the plate in her hitting approach.
Even though a second-inning pitch hit the Downers Grove North senior in the chest, she dug in close to the plate in the third and promptly launched a three-run homer over the left-field fence to highlight a 12-0, five-inning Game 1 win against Lincoln-Way Central (11-9).
The No. 3 Trojans won the second game 14-2 in five innings using the same approach.
"I just have to keep my confidence up," Ryndak said. "It doesn't matter if I get hit by a pitch. I've got to believe I am going to get a hit every time. I've got to stay tough, and not let up."

Ryndak (10-1) picked up the Game 1 win, striking out 10 in a three-hitter. Her sister, Dale Ryndak (11-1), won Game 2.
Sam Yeager (3 hits, 4 runs, 2 HR, 5 RBIs), Kendall Ryndak (4 hits, HR, 5 RBIs) and Katie Hunzinger (5 hits, 4 runs, 5 RBIs) led the offensive charge.
"We didn't get cheated at the plate today," Trojans coach Mark Margo said. "Once we started hitting we didn't stop. Hitting is contagious."
The Trojans (21-2) sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored five runs in the first inning of the first game.
They sent 13 to the plate in a seven-run, eight-hit fourth inning in Game 2. Even though they are loaded up to swing away, Downers Grove North coaxed three walks to further set the table for its aggressive hitters. Trojans leadoff hitter Rachel Bradley and No. 2 hitter Carolyn Nojiri scored 11 runs combined.
"We always plan on getting on so the other girls can knock us in," Nojiri said. "Our job is to put our pitch in play and not swing at pitches outside the strike zone."

It is safe to say Naperville Central pitcher Alyssa Wunderlich is on a roll.
The SIU-bound senior, who is coming off a no-hitter against Glenbard East, held yet another opponent scoreless. Wunderlich’s seven-strikeout, three-hit and one-walk performance led the Redhawks to a 3-0 rivalry win over host Naperville North on Wednesday in DuPage Valley Conference action.
Wunderlich (11-3) has allowed just four runs in 68 innings.
“As long as they don’t score, I’m happy,” said Wunderlich, who threw 117 pitches.
“Alyssa threw great,” Naperville North coach Jerry Kedziora added. “She’s a dominant pitcher. There’s another level there when it comes time to her pitching. It’s hard to get something going against her.”
The win keeps Naperville Central (18-6) tied for first with West Chicago in the DVC standings at 9-2. Naperville North is now 10-10, 4-7.
“It makes every game that much more interesting,” Naperville Central shortstop Kelsey Gonzalez said of being at the top of the DVC. “But beating Naperville North was huge for us. Every game is huge for us right now.”
“Pretty much every conference game is like the championship game,” Wunderlich added. “We just have to play every game like it’s our last one. We just have to take it game-by-game.”
The Redhawks scored twice in the third and once in the fifth. Jill Andreoni led the third off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Nicole Kappelman then singled, got to second on a Naperville North error that also pushed Andreoni to third. She ended up scoring on the only RBI single of the game from Kelsey Gonzalez. Kappelman got home on a Meghan Griffin ground out RBI.
Kappelman also scored the third Naperville Central run when she led the off the fifth getting to second on an error. She advanced to second on Juliet Tassi’s sacrifice bunt and scored on the Huskies’ third error of the game.
“They’ve been doing great,” Naperville Central coach Andy Nussbaum said of the offense. “It just puts a lot of pressure on the defense when you have to deal with (players who) have a great eye, speed and can put the ball in play ... we are confident Meghan or Kelsey can get runners in.”
The closest Naperville North came to scoring was when Tara Degl’Innocenti led off the second with a double. Emily Dieckmann also drew a leadoff walk in the fifth, but the closest her pinch-runner, Amy Thayer, could get was second base.
“(Naperville Central) didn’t make any errors; they played awesome,” Kedziora said. “If they keep playing defense like that, they are going to go a long way. We just made a few mistakes, and they got the hits when they needed to.”
