White Text Jenny Gray read the play and went with complete abandon. The Lincoln-Way East junior left fielder scored from second on a Bolingbrook throwing error that enabled the No. 3 Griffins to escape the Raiders’ upset bid 6-5 in the teams’ SouthWest Suburban Blue opener Thursday in Frankfort. The dramatic conclusion capped a topsy-turvy affair that saw the Griffins in very strange, even alien territory. Star junior pitcher Kaycee Hart was roughed up during a difficult third inning. She lasted just 2 2/3 innings for the Griffins as the Raiders (3-6, 0-1) sent 10 hitters to the plate, scoring four runs on four hits. Bolingbrook also took advantage of two walks and a throwing error for the early lead. Ashley DeLuca’s run-scoring single pushed the Raiders’ lead to 3-0 and chased Hart. Freshman reliever Sarah Esposito promptly surrendered an RBI single to Becky Cronk. She enticed a comeback to the mound to escape any further damage. “We haven’t been down like that, by four runs, the whole year,” sophomore shortstop Jorgi Calombaris said. “We knew we couldn’t panic, that we had to get back into the game one run at a time.” After their sluggish start, the Griffins (10-0, 1-0) finally got untracked offensively in the bottom of the fifth inning. Down 4-1 to the start the frame, Lincoln-Way East culled together five hits and utilized a Bolingbrook error for a four-run uprising. Gray added a run-scoring single. Senior designated hitter Aubrey DeGroot (2-for-4) delivered the key blow by lacing a shot down the left field line for a run-scoring double that knotted the score. “I was just trying to get the ball down,” DeGroot said. “The wind and conditions made it very hard out there. The wind would blow the dust and your eyes would start to water up. Fortunately I was able to make contact,” she said. Senior centerfielder Jill Reid (3-for-4) smashed a single into right field that scored DeGroot for the 5-4 Griffins’ advantage. Bolingbrook sophomore Nikki Wood forged the final tie by drilling a run-scoring double into left center with two outs in the top of the sixth. Esposito ran her record to 2-0, striking out five and surrendering two runs on three hits in 4 1/3 innings. “The longer the game went, the more comfortable I got, and I think I got stronger as the game wore on,“ she said. Esposito ended the seventh inning with consecutive strikeouts after the Raiders put runners at first and second with one out. In the bottom of the seventh, Gray’s hustle avoided a potential double play when her sharply hit ball to short forced Calombaris out at second. Gray advanced to second on Kaley Jendraszak’s single into centerfield. A throwing error on DeGroot’s groundball ended the game. Bolingbrook coach Jean Ryan-Moak was disheartened by the manner her team lost though pleased by the Raiders’ resilience. “I was very happy with our hitting, because (Hart) is probably the fastest throwing pitcher we’ve faced the whole year,” Ryan-Moak said. “We’ve really struggled with our bats, and that’s one of the reasons we’re 3-6. I was not happy with our fielding, especially in the fourth inning. We lost the game on an error. Sometimes you can’t avoid that.”

Somehow, pitcher throws no-hitter but still loses game By Cameron Smith When is the pitcher of a no-hitter not the player of the game for the contest in which they pulled off the feat? Perhaps when they throw a no-no but still lose the game. As impossible as that may sound, that's precisely what happened on Sunday, when Audubon (N.J.) High knocked off Camden (N.J.) Catholic High, 1-0, in a Rancocas Valley Elite Softball Tournament quarterfinal. Incredibly, Audubon overcame nine innings of no-hit pitching from Laura Messina, who started the game and went the distance.
While Messina may have technically absorbed the loss, she was quite literally perfect on the afternoon. According to the Cherry Hill Courier-Post, Messina struck out 20 and didn't walk a single batter. In the end, it took a daring suicide squeeze to hand her a loss, with Audubon base runner Shannon Logan beating a tag from the Camden Catholic catcher after batter Alex Gravinese's pop up of a bunt gave Logan just enough time to score from third. "I thought they were going to catch it, because it was a pop fly for a bunt," Logan told the Courier-Post. "They came home. I was scared I was going to be called out, but I knew I was safe. My adrenaline was rushing." Logan's coach made it clear that the win was a significant one for the team, despite coming so early in the season. "It was a huge win for us," Audubon coach Erin Small told the Courier-Post. "We were struggling even getting a bunt down. You can't take anything away from Messina. She is a phenomenal pitcher. But, Alex Gravinese, who's one of our better bunters, she had attempted more than once to bunt. It just fell into place and we were able to push the run across. I'd told the girls the entire game, as long as we played good defense, we were in the game." Of course, Logan was only put on base because of softball's bizarre international tiebreaker rule, which stipulates that if a game is tied after seven innings, the batter who made the final out of the previous inning starts the following frame on second base. From there, she moved to third on another sacrifice bunt. So, it took more than an amazing suicide squeeze to beat Messina; it also took a forced runner starting the inning on second base. Despite leaving with an empty feeling from the loss, Messina and her teammates could only point to their own struggles against Audubon pitcher Hunter Urban, who allowed only two hits and one walk during her nine innings of work. "You've got to give credit to Audubon for sticking in there," Camden Catholic coach Mavreen Hering told the Courier-Post. "They came out and Laura was mowing everybody down." Perhaps equally amazingly, Audubon's miraculous Camden Catholic victory wasn't even the school's first of the weekend. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Audubon trailed St. Joseph (N.J.) High 2-0 entering the seventh inning of one of the tournament's first round matchups. That's when Audubon came through with a shocking offensive explosion. First, slugger Amanda Hauske delivered a two-run double to tie the game and was quickly replaced at second by -- you guessed it -- Logan. The pinch runner then advanced to third on a sacrifice and came around to score when a pitch during an intentional walk attempt went wide, allowing Logan to race home with ease. Two games made for a wild weekend in New Jersey softball, even if the purveyor of the most notable feat of all didn't finish with a win. "I was scared, I was nervous," Gravinese told the Courier-Post. "I'm pretty sure all of us were mentally down earlier because she [Messina] kept striking everyone out, but we needed to keep our heads up. We came back in the seventh inning in our first game, so we know what to do."

On the third offering from Vikings starter Ashlynne Schwantz, Cavin laced a line-drive over the left-center field fence for her first home run of the season in a 4-1 Mid-Suburban League victory.
The lefty hitter and right-handed thrower did the rest in the circle, striking out eight and allowing six hits. It was the second consecutive feather-in-the-cap victory for the Cougars (12-1, 3-1), who were a day removed from a big win over Barrington.
"It was a real good way to start the game," Cavin said. "I thought it was going to hit the fence. I didn't think it was going over."
Cavin wasn't done doing damage at the plate. Her RBI double in the second scored freshman second baseman Rachel O'Malley for a 2-0 lead. O'Malley made it 4-1 in the top of the sixth when she hit her first home run of the year, a two-run shot to left-center.
The No. 10 Vikings (12-1, 2-1) cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Kristine Herdegen that scored Michelle Mazur, who reached on a two-out double. Mazur was 2-for-3 with two doubles.
"My girls have heart and a lot of passion, and they know what to do to win games," Conant coach CathyAnn Smith said.
In the seventh, Cavin retired the side in order while striking out the last two. Hilary O'Donnell was 3-for-3 with a double for the Cougars.
"We missed with a pitch and we learned real quick we need to put the ball in better spots," Fremd coach Jim Weaver said. "We still have kids battling for spots. We are worried about getting better for the month of May. We focus on the state tournament."
Player of the game: Briana Cavin, Conant, 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBIs; 7 IP, 1 R, 8 SO, 4 BB.
Key performers: Fremd — Michelle Mazur, 2-for-3, 2 2B. Conant – Hilary O'Donnell, 3-for-3, 2B; Rachel O'Malley, 2-for-3, HR, 2 RBIs, 2 R.

Alyssa Wunderlich came thisclose to No. 2 Saturday. Advertisement The Southern Illinois-bound senior retired the first 19 batters she faced before a one-out single in the seventh inning, striking out 16 to beat York 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader in Naperville. “Once it gets late in the game you just think to yourself, ‘Oh, please just keep making your pitches,’” Wunderlich said, “but I try not to think about (the perfect game). I just take it one pitch at a time. Unfortunately, they got the hit in the seventh. Oh well.” Loyola recruit Kristina Vizza followed up Wunderlich’s gem with one of her own in Game 2, striking out 10 in a 4-1 one-hitter. Vizza walked four, York’s run unearned. “We challenged (Wunderlich) a little bit. Boy, I thought she was dominant,” Nussbaum said. “With the rain and the schedule packed the way it is, it’s nice to have two really good pitchers.” York has faced its share of aces this year, from St. Charles North’s Amanda Ciran to Lilly Fecho of Glenbard North. But the Dukes (6-9) went down feebly against Naperville Central’s hurlers. Kayla Madigan’s opposite-field slap single in the seventh inning accounted for York’s lone baserunner in Game 1. Danielle Morency beat out a nubber in front of home plate for the Dukes’ hit in Game 2. York did get strong pitching performances by ace Tessa Kroll (5-5), who allowed 2 hits with 3 strikeouts in Game 1, and Nikki Mordini in Game 2. “Their pitcher in the second game had us off stride the whole game,” York coach Tom Babyar said, “and we had some weak swings all day. Our approach has got to get better. Our swings are too long.” No. 13 Naperville Central (9-3) scored Game 1’s lone run in the fourth. Kroll, perfect through three innings, walked leadoff hitter Juliet Tassi. Tassi advanced all the way to third base on a Keegan Hayes sacrifice, and Kelsey Gonzalez lined Kroll’s first pitch to center for a run-scoring single. That was plenty for Wunderlich. With a devastating screwball boring in on righty batters, Wunderlich (4-2) threw her second one-hitter of the year. Wunderlich became the fourth Redhawks pitcher in the last 28 years to take a perfect game into the seventh inning. Maureen Morris has the lone perfect game, back in 1989. “I was trying to move my pitches around with my different offspeeds, which helped,” said Wunderlich, whose first 14 strikeouts came on swinging third strikes. “They definitely swang at a lot of pitches. That forces me to mix it up. With real aggressive hitters I think you have to change speeds more.” Lefty Vizza (5-1), a change of pace from Wunderlich, couldn’t command her good changeup as well as she’d like but consistently dotted the outside corner. “The umpire was giving me a ball outside,” Vizza said. “Whenever I get that big of a distance I’ll keep throwing it until the batters catch on.” Gonzalez tripled in Tassi in the first inning and scored on an error for a 2-0 Redhawks lead. Kayla Skinner singled in a run in the fourth and Maddi Doane singled and came around to score on a dropped third strike in the sixth. By James Nokes Special to the Tribune
4:45 p.m. CDT, April 23, 2011 ct-spt-0424-prep-soft-lockport-richar20110423 Richards coach Julie Folliard has a name for the aggressive approach pitcher Brianna LeBeau used to hold Lockport hitless in the final three innings of a 4-2 win Saturday in Oak Lawn.
"That's the LeBeau trait," Folliard said of the Bulldogs junior, who improved to 11-0 with the complete-game four-hitter. "I've coached all three LeBeau sisters — Amanda, Brittany and now Brianna — and they are as competitive as they come."
After struggling to adjust to the Illinois High School Association's change in pitching distance as a sophomore, LeBeau has found her confidence this spring. Her consistent use of a dazzling array of off-speed pitches kept the Porters off balance all game.
"It's very important to switch up pitch speed and work everything," LeBeau said. "My off-speed pitches work when my others do, too. I try to incorporate everything."

The Bulldogs (15-0) came to life in the bottom of the third inning. With Richards trailing 1-0, LeBeau helped her own cause with a 2-RBI double down the right-field line. Hannah Jenkins roped a double down the left-field line one hitter later to give Richards a 3-1 lead.
Lockport (13-4) added a run in the top of the fourth on Tierney Bottino's RBI single to cut Richards' lead to 3-2. But LeBeau closed out the Porters lineup with four strikeouts in the last three innings and didn't allow Lockport to hit the ball out of the infield.
"It makes it harder for any hitter to get their timing and hit the ball solid," Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec said of LeBeau's variety of pitches. "That's what having control of her changeup does for her."
Folliard said Richards needed the solid test Lockport provided.
"We were anxious to play a good team," Folliard said. "We've heard a lot of talk that we haven't played anyone. We've played who our schedule and rain will allow. We feel like we've played a lot of good teams. We've got a lot of improving to do but have done a good job so far."
Player of the game: Brianna LeBeau, Richards, 7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 8 SO; 1-for-3, 2B, 2 RBIs.
Key performers: Richards — Hannah Jenkins, 1-for-3, R, 2B, RBI. Lockport — Allie Phad, 1-for-3, 2B, R; Amanda Oberc, 1-for-2, SB, RBI.

Freshman Hayes leads Redhawks softball to victory By Rob Wollenzien For Sun-Times Media Apr 30, 2011 09:38PM
E-Mail Print Metea Valley's Emily Baker sprints home to score a run against Naperville Central on Saturday. | Terence Guider-Shaw~For Sun-Times Media Article Extras View Gallery One player stood out in Naperville Central’s 5-3 home win Saturday over Metea Valley.
Redhawks freshman third baseman Keegan Hayes went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk, also flawlessly handling two chances at third.
She roped a go-ahead, two-run single with two outs in the second inning and the bases loaded for a 2-0 Redhawks lead. Then, Hayes contributed defensively by snaring a line drive to start the top of the fifth and perfectly fielding a bunt for a 5-3 putout to end the sixth.
“Keegan’s only a freshman and she can do a lot of great things for us,” Redhawks assistant coach Jackelyn Diekemper said. “She pitches, she plays third, she plays outfield (and) she can hit the ball, so we’re excited about her future and she did a great job again today.”
The underclassman takes a very mature approach up to the plate, explaining, “You just try to shorten the swing and not pull the ball when it’s outside — just go to right. And when it’s inside, pull the ball to left.”
Hayes delivered her big hit four batters after the Redhawks (13-3) had knocked out Mustangs freshman starter Jenna Hall (3-3), who did not allow a run while in the game in an inning-plus of work despite allowing hits to five of the seven batters she faced.
Metea Valley left fielder Antoinette Senese helped Hall escape the first unscathed with an outfield assist to cut down Hayes at the plate. In the second, Senese overran Hayes’ run-scoring single for an error that allowed Hayes to reach second as the ball rolled all the way to the wall.
The Mustangs made some of the tougher plays but committed two errors on relatively routine balls.
“We have some inconsistencies, and that happens with youth,” Mustangs coach Kris Kalivas said of her juniors-and-younger team. “We have some things that we’re going to clean up.”
Juniors Stephanie Bova and Alexa Caputo combined to finish the game in relief of Hall.
The Redhawks built a 5-1 lead with help from RBI by Meghan Griffin and Maddi Doane in the fourth, but Metea Valley scored twice in the seventh on an RBI double by catcher Jenn Faassen and an error.
Naperville Central left-handed pitcher Kristina Vizza got the win with a complete game. She struck out six and walked two.
Vizza said her fastball-changeup combination keyed the victory. In terms of run support, she appreciated Hayes’ clutch hit.
“That felt really comfortable after she hit that and it was nice that we had runs on the board,” Vizza said. “And it made it more comfortable for me pitching out there.”
Added Diekemper: “She got ahead, way ahead, and stayed ahead.”

Lisle opponents are used to it. Advertisement Houda and Early fired three straight shutouts, Houda’s second a no-hitter to beat Geneva in the Byron Invite championship game. “Mel was great in the first game, and Bekka pitched phenomenal,” Lisle coach Jen Pomatto said. “Three shutouts that day; you don’t need to say anything more.” Counting a conference sweep of Westmont, Houda and Early have thrown five straight shutouts, six on the season for 13-1 Lisle. Houda is 9-0 with a 0.97 ERA with 87 strikeouts and 34 hits allowed in 58 innings. Early, also hitting .581 with 12 RBI, is 4-1 with a 0.22 ERA, with 37 strikeouts and 16 hits in 32 innings. “I don’t remember the last time I had a team ERA of 0.70. Pretty impressive,” Pomatto said. “I definitely think it’s the mental game. They know they have their defense behind them, and I’ve seen that fire in Bekka. If somebody gets on, she gets mad. Grace (Riley) is calling a great game, and they are hitting their spots and keeping batters off-balance.” Not to be outdone, Lisle’s offense is scoring more than 6 runs a game. Valparaiso-bound shortstop Mackenzie Buchelt is hitting .458 with 20 RBI. Pomatto said the girls didn’t get caught up in beating a good Class 4A opponent. “We know we have a job to do, no matter who we’re playing,” she said. “We can’t control what other teams do and who they are.” Nice turnaround for Hilltoppers: Glenbard West coach Mary McGrane has preached since Day One that Hilltoppers bring a fresh attitude this spring. She was preaching to the choir with Emily Rooney. Rooney, who stole 16 bases last year as primarily a courtesy runner, is hitting a team-high .536 from her No. 9 position. Glenbard West is 10-3 after 13 games, compared to 4-9 at the same point last year. “She showed up and was determined to start,” McGrane said of her senior right fielder. “I always tell the kids they have to earn their positions, and she showed up with the right attitude and busted her butt. I’m proud of her sticking with it.” Second on the team in batting average is Taylor Steinhilber at .484 with 9 RBI, also the staff ace with a no-hitter of West Chicago on her resume. Steinhilber is even better with runners in scoring position, hitting .692. “I’ll be honest, in all my years around softball I’ve never seen a kid like that who consistently hits the ball up the middle like Taylor,” McGrane said. “She makes the adjustment pitch to pitch. Nothing fazes her, which is great.” Measuring stick for Trojans: On the heels of winning a program-record 28 games last year, 13-0 Downers Grove North is poised to smash that mark. Now the Trojans get their toughest test to date. On Friday No. 3 Downers Grove North visits No. 1 Elk Grove, Class 4A semifinalist last year. Grens coach Ken Grams emailed some 40 schools this week looking for a game, and Downers Grove North’s Mark Magro jumped at the chance. “I wondered how the girls would react when I told them,” Magro said. “They were all excited. This is the kind of game that will only help us down the road.” No pitching combo in DuPage County has been better this season than Trojans senior Kendall Ryndak and her sister, freshman Dale. Kendall is 7-0 with a 0.71 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 49 innings and Dale 7-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 47 innings as Magro alternates their outings almost to a T. Backing them up is a lineup Magro calls his best in six years at Downers North. Kendall Ryndak is hitting .550 and Dale Ryndak, Sarah Anderson, Rachel Bradley and Brittany Nagy are all hitting over .400. “I’ve always said if we can just score a few runs,” Magro said, “our pitching is good enough that we’ll win.” Montini finally gets full deck: Mother Nature has made this a frustrating, strange spring season for every softball team in DuPage County. Montini takes the cake, though. Monday’s 10-2 win over Wheaton Academy was the Broncos’ first game with its full complement of 12 players. Seven of Montini coach Richie Costante’s dozen kids have missed time due to injuries, sickness, school retreats, vacations, etc. The absences have hurt an already green team with three freshmen and three sophomores. Montini, 21-16 Suburban Christian Blue co-champion with St. Francis last year, is 4-8 and three games back of St. Francis. The Broncos had the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh but couldn’t score in a 2-0 loss to St. Edward, and second and third in the last inning of a 9-8 loss to Immaculate Conception. “Inexperience bit us in the butt in some games we should have won,” Costante said. Costante sees a light at the end of the tunnel, though. Emily Barg, a nice surprise hitting, has carried Montini’s pitching, and the Broncos finally scored for her Monday after going 28 innings without a run. Freshman Christina Barrett, who missed the first week and a half with a concussion, was batting .400 and leading the team in RBI before hitting her head in gym and missing games to get her wisdom teeth pulled. “I’m gonna put a bubble around her,” Costante joked. All kidding aside, Montini hosts St. Francis in a big one next Wednesday, and Costante knows they also need some help to get back in the conference race. “I think we’re going to be a tough team to beat the rest of the season and come playoff time,” Costante said. “All we can worry about is us. Let the chips fall where they may.” Read more: www.dailyherald.com/article/20110427/sports/704279799/#ixzz1Kukxr3ra

Wrapped in blankets in the bleachers and along the left-field fence, Lockport fans looked like they were ready for a Bears game Tuesday instead of softball. “This is football weather,’’ an umpire remarked as he hurried off the field after the game. It was football weather with a football score as Lockport rolled to a 14-0 Southwest Suburban Blue victory over host Joliet West. Amanda Oberc pitched a complete game for Lockport (14-7-1, 3-3) with seven strikeouts. “It was a very on day for me today,’’ Oberc said. “I was really working the inside corners, jamming them, throwing them off balance with my changeups.’’ Oberc faced only three batters in six of her seven innings and issued no walks. “She had command of her pitches, she was getting ahead,’’ Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec said. “That’s one thing we had been talking to them about--putting runners on base without them earning it. No walks. She did a good job of that.’’ “That’s a really key component,’’ Oberc said. “You have to have control. And your defense has to back you up. They did a great job.’’ The offense wasn’t bad either. Designated hitter Brianna Carney led the 16-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs, three RBIs and a solo homer for a 2-0 lead in the fourth. “I was going up there with a clear mind, just finding my pitch,’’ Carney said. “We got some runs and it was contagious.’’ Lia Romeo was 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs, Britni Vrba had three hits, Ashley London two doubles and Tierney Bottino two singles and two runs scored. Kayla Sorensen pitched the first four innings for Joliet West (9-12, 2-4) and left with only a 3-0 deficit. ‘’We have a younger pitching staff, we have a younger defense,’’ Joliet West coach Heather Suca said. “They really started getting hits off Katie McKay. We really don’t have another pitcher to put in after that.’’ Lockport put the game out of reach with a seven-run seventh inning. “It was a good learning experience for her,’’ Suca said of McKay. “Hopefully next time that happens she can work through it a little bit better.’’ Suca said her team was hitting in the previous five games, but Oberc limited West to two hits, including a double off the centerfield fence by Julia Liceaga. “Her curveball and her changeup definitely kept us off balance,’’ Suca said. “Hopefully the next time we see a pitcher of that caliber we’ll be better.’’ Tuesday’s softball roundup May 3, 2011 St. Charles North 11, Larkin 1: Taylor Russell went 3-for-3 with a double and RBI for No. 4 St. Charles North (17-1, 11-0 Upstate Eight River).
