Naperville Central still has Benet's number Naperville Central's Alyssa Wunderlich is greeted by teammates after she blasted a homer against Benet. (Terence Guider-Shaw/For Sun-Times Media)
April 7, 2011 BY CHRISTINE BOLIN -- FOR SUN-TIMES MEDIA
Font Size Print Email En Espanol Bookmark Black Text White TextDating back to the 2009 season, the Naperville Central softball team has beaten local rival Benet every time the two have faced off.
The Redhawks made it five in a row after their10-2 nonconference win against the Redwings in Lisle Thursday.
"It's a pretty good rivalry, and our kids like to win rivalry games," Naperville Central coach Andy Nussbaum said. "This year, we have a chance to be pretty good. This is the kind of effort we expect all the time. I thought we were very good today, but we should be very good."
Not only was the rivalry win good for Naperville Central (2-1), but so was the offense. The Redhawks produced 10 runs on 11 hits, including back-to-back solo home runs from Alyssa Wunderlich and Maddi Doane, a freshman center fielder.
"That was nice to see," Nussbaum said. "(Doane) is a pretty capable hitter. She's going to be a pretty good player for us for a long time."
Doane followed her first varsity hit with a two-run double in the fifth, when the Redhawks scored four runs on four hits. They followed in the sixth with three runs on three hits, led by Kelsey Gonzalez' RBI double. She also hit an RBI single the previous inning. Leadoff hitter Nicole Kappelman also scored three runs and produced three singles.
"It was really nice to see us keep coming back offensively," Wunderlich said.
Wunderlich, the SIU-bound pitcher, earned her first win of the year after she struck out six, allowed five hits and walked two batters.
"Overall, Alyssa was very, very good," Nussbaum said. "Both of Benet's runs were unearned, and (her performance) was sharp."
Despite Naperville Central's powerful offense, Benet did itself in by producing seven errors. That is more than the Redwings have had all season. In the first 11 games of the year, it combined for only five. They are now 9-3 overall.
"This shows you can be one of the best teams in the area and still have bad games," Benet coach Jerry Schilf said. "This is by far one of the worst games we have played in a long, long time. We didn't pitch well, we didn't hit well and we played terrible defense."

Ryndaks pace Downers North past rival April 7, 2011 BY PATRICK Z. McGAVIN -- FOR SUN-TIMES MEDIA
Font Size Print Email En Espanol Bookmark Black Text White TextSisters Kendall and Dale Ryndak have a special bond on the softball field, evident by the competitive though playful gestures and private asides the two share during the course of a game.
They also clearly bring out the best in each other’s game.
The Downers Grove North pitchers combined for a one-hitter and freshman Dale Ryndak blasted a home run that powered the visiting No. 10 Trojans past No. 12 Downers South 5-0 Thursday afternoon.
Senior Kendall Ryndak ran her record to 4-0 in throwing five nearly flawless innings. Dale Ryndak earned her second save of the year, getting three strikeouts and not allowing a ball out of the infield.
“I was nervous, I had butterflies on the bus on the way over to the game, because I was so (pumped) about playing South,“ Dale Ryndak said. “It’s just such a thrill for me to be able to play with my sister.“
The sisters faced the minimum 21 batters, allowing just two base runners. Kendall Ryndak walked the first batter she faced, South centerfielder Marissa Mersch, who was thrown out attempting to steal second.
Downers South (4-2) managed only one hit, a single by Katy LaCivita in the bottom of the fifth. North senior shortstop Katie Hunzinger, spectacular in the field, made a brilliant diving catch and finished the superb double play by doubling the pinch runner off first by throwing from her knees. “I don’t like to let any ball get past me, especially any ball hit between second and third,” Hunzinger said.
Kendall Ryndak recorded a lone strikeout, but she masterfully kept Downers South‘s hitters off balance with excellent location and movement on her fast ball. “South is a very talented team with a lot of big bats, and for us to give up just one hit and allow two runners is a great compliment, not just to me, but the whole team,” Kendall Ryndak said.
Brittany Nagy put the Trojans (7-0) up 1-0 in the top of the second with a single that drove in Hunzinger. Dale Ryndak extended the lead to 2-0 with a solo home run with two outs in the top of the fifth.
“The pitch was low, and I just kind of golfed it,” Dale Ryndak said. It was her second home run of the year. Downers North broke the game open in the sixth by collecting four extra-base hits. Nagy’s double drove in Sam Yeager, who also doubled. First baseman Jenna Butler punctuated the impressive victory with a two-run home run to center field.
“It was a total team victory,” Downers North coach Mark Margo said.

Bishop McNamara
Last year's record: 24-10
Coach: Laura Harms (1st season)
Key returners: Erika Tatum, Sr.; Aly Hana, Sr.; Belinda Schaafsma, Sr.; Josie Dexter Jr; Jaelen Hull, So.
Analysis: Through a number of coaching changes, the Fightin' Irish continue to churn out successful seasons. Harms enters as the team's fourth coach in five years, but Mac has adjusted well to each previous change, winning at least 19 victories in each of the past three seasons. There's no reason to think the Irish won't have another solid season, with most of last year's 24-win team returning. Pitchers Hull and Schaafsma give Mac arguably the best combination of returning starters in the area. Meanwhile, Tatum, Hana and Dexter give the Irish one of the area's most dangerous lineups as well. The trio combined to hit .493 with 31 home runs, 139 RBIs and 110 runs scored.

WHAT TO WATCH With virtually the entire line-up back, St. Francis appears destined to improve on its 22-win output from a year ago. Leading the charge is junior third baseman Bri Pasquale, who batted an outstanding .564 in 2010 with 45 RBIs and 53 runs scored. Paige Davis is a three-year starter at shortstop while Laura Behnke, Emily Karpinski and Blaine Carragher also will be important cogs in the line-up. In the pitching circle, senior Taylor Ronchetto returns for her fourth varsity campaign. “We have an experienced team with a good offense and a solid defense,” said coach Ralph Remus. The Spartans will be looking to once again win the Suburban Christian Conference Blue title after tying for first place with Montini in 2010. Another goal is a deeper run in the playoffs after falling in a regional semifinal last spring.

She isn’t complaining about it, either. Naperville Central backed its junior lefty with a 14-hit attack on Monday in Naperville, beating Waubonsie Valley 11-2. Advertisement The Redhawks (5-1), not particularly an offensive juggernaut in recent years, have scored 35 runs in Vizza’s three starts, and 55 total in a five-game winning streak. “It’s definitely comfortable when I’m out there and I know that if I screw up for some reason that they got my back,” Vizza said. “Last year and two years ago the scores were more like 1-0, 2-0. It feels good.” Every spot in the Naperville Central lineup managed at least one hit. Nicole Kappelman, moved to leadoff in the Redhawks’ third game, was 3-for-5 with a double, 2 runs scored and run batted in. Juliet Tassi was 2-for-4, and just missed a homer to center, Katie Walker was 2-for-3 and Kelsey Gonzalez and Keegan Hayes both had RBI triples. Gonzalez, hitting .611 coming in, also hit a blistering one-hopper to short that was fielded nicely by Warriors freshman Amanda Lack. “I’d single out kids for individual performances, but when you’re scoring every inning that’s hard to do,” Redhawks coach Andy Nussbaum said. “Even the outs we’re making are pretty loud outs.” Waubonsie Valley (4-6) was missing two starters, shortstop Amanda Minihan missing her second game with a concussion and second baseman Haylie Wensel out sick. The Warriors, scoring over 7 runs per game over their last eight, didn’t manage a baserunner off Vizza until one out in the fourth. Waubonsie did nick Vizza for 2 runs in the fifth with the help of 2 Redhawks errors. Carly Sass, who was 2-for-3, singled in the first run. But the Warriors left the bases loaded trailing 5-2. “We hit the ball well, but our offense just didn’t show up today. That’s something I’m not used to,” Waubonsie coach Aly Kelley said. “I think maybe the morale of our team is just down a little bit right now, missing a couple of our players. I told them ‘you need to keep your heads up and play through this.’” Loyola recruit Vizza (3-0) allowed four hits while striking out five, utilizing a good breaking pitch. “That’s my favorite pitch,” Vizza said. “I can throw that when the count’s 3-2. That’s the pitch I’m most comfortable with and it’s been working so far this season.” Naperville Central’s schedule picks up the rest of the week with games against Lockport and Downers Grove South and a doubleheader with Neuqua Valley. “Historically the last 25 years Lockport and Downers South are two of the programs you measure yourself by. There’s a reason we play both of them in the same week,” Nussbaum said. “There are things we still need to work on but right now I feel pretty good with the way we’re playing.” Read more: www.dailyherald.com/article/20110411/sports/704119794/#ixzz1JJLgAdAV

Naperville Central softball team pounds Waubonsie Valley By Christine Bolin For Sun-Times Media Apr 11, 2011 10:22PM
E-Mail Print Naperville Central's Nicole Kappelman slides safely into second past Waubonsie Valley's Amanda Lack. | Corey R. Minkanic~For Sun-Times Media Article Extras View Gallery Apparently, the theme of the Naperville Central softball team so far is offense.
In the Redhawks’ five wins this year, they have a combined total of 55 runs. They produced their fourth consecutive double-digit outing Monday in an 11-2 win over Waubonsie Valley.
“In 2009, we may have scored double-digit runs maybe four times the whole year, and that may be stretching it,” said Naperville Central coach Andy Nussbaum, referring to the Redhawk team that won 31 games and went fourth at state in Class 4A two seasons ago. “I don’t know (what has changed). We have a really nice mix of girls who can get on base and girls who can hit the ball hard.”
The Redhawks (5-1 overall with the only loss to Hinsdale South) scored at least one run in every inning. They were up 5-0 by the bottom of the fourth. Waubonsie Valley (4-6) got as close as 5-2 in the fifth inning thanks to Amanda Lack and Courtney Hicks getting around the bases combining a timely hit, walk and a series of errors from Naperville Central.
The Redhawks, however, made up for it quickly in the bottom of the inning with three runs, led by RBI from pinch-hitter Alyssa Wunderlich and a huge two-run double from leadoff hitter Nicole Kappelman. She finished with three hits and scored twice.
Three more runs were produced in the sixth for Naperville Central, led by a two-run single from No. 9 hitter Dana Dolehide. Juliet Tassi finished with a pair of hits, as did Meghan Griffin and Katie Walker. Laura Dierking also scored three times.
“I told the girls I would single out people’s specific good performances, but when you score every inning, (you can’t),” Nussbaum said.
“We’ve hit the ball well, but our offense just didn’t show up today,” added Waubonsie Valley coach Aly Kelley, whose team was playing without two starting infielders, shortstop Amanda Minihan (recovering from a concussion) and second baseman Hayley Wensel (ill). “That’s something I’m not used to. We struggled in our very first game, and then after that, our bats showed up every time.”
Naperville Central pitcher Kristina Vizza improved to 3-0 after she struck out five, allowed five hits (all singles) and walked two batters. She was flawless in the first three innings before Sarah Gosciniak hit a single in the fourth inning with one out.
“(The run support) made it comfortable out there,” Vizza said. “I know (my teammates) always have my back with scoring a lot of runs...I felt good today. When I was warming up, I knew I’d do good. I didn’t feel it was going to be a bad day.”
“I thought Kristina was sharp,” Nussbaum added.

Naperville North bounces back for win April 13, 2011 BY CHRISTINE BOLIN -- FOR SUN-TIMES MEDIA
Font Size Print Email En Espanol Bookmark Black Text White TextNaperville North quickly forgot about its loss against Downers South Tuesday and produced a 1-0 win against nonconference Benet Wednesday.
"We had a rough game (Tuesday), but we definitely bounced back," Naperville North pitcher Emily Dieckmann said. "I think mentally, we just got it together. We did not have a great game (Tuesday). We knew we were better than that."
Dieckmann and Benet's Allyson Staats were in a pitcher's duel. Both hurlers did well. Dieckmann improved to 5-1 after she allowed four hits, two strikeouts and two walks.
"I felt really good today, and the defense, everyone was just awesome," said Dieckmann, whose Huskies recorded no errors.
"Emily was on her game," Naperville North coach Jerry Kedziora added. "That's what we needed our No. 1 to do today -- to stop a team like Benet."
Staats (9-4) took the tough loss after she struck out seven batters, walked one and allowed three hits. She didn't allow any hits after the third inning. She also recorded the only extra-base hit of the game -- a double in the fourth.
"Allyson pitched great," Benet coach Jerry Schilf said. "If we pitch, hit and play defense the way we are capable of, we can beat anyone, anywhere, anytime. We pitched today, that's all we did. We did not play defense like we are capable of (Benet made three errors) and we did not hit."
"Staats was on," Kedziora added. "We haven't struck out that many times (in one game) all season. That's a tough loss for her, but our girls battled."
One of those three hits for the Huskies (5-3) was a RBI single from Caitlyn Warren in the third that turned out to be the game-winner. With one out in that inning, Bella Masini reached first on a Benet error that was originally called an out until the decision was overturned by the umpire. Masini got to second on a passed ball and scored on Warren's hit.
"They took advantage of the mistakes we made in one inning, Caitlyn Warren came up with a hit and that was the ball game," Schilf said.
Benet's (10-4) best chance to score arrived in the sixth after Maeve McGuire and Kendall Duffy connected on back-to-back singles -- half of its total hits -- with one out. The Huskies, however, were able to get the next two outs and got out of the inning with no harm done.

White Text Sunset brought an end to the activities Saturday evening at the first Providence Softball Invitational, with the host Celtics and Lockport locked in a 2-2 battle. Afterward, Lockport was awarded the tournament championship plaque for winning its previous two games. RELATED STORIES Photos: Lockport vs. Providence In other news, the tournament might not be over. “You hate to have a game like that end in a tie,” Providence coach Jay Biesterfeld said. “So we’re going to both try to find an open date where we can complete the contest.” Earlier, it was no contest in the games No. 16 Lockport (4-0-1) played against No. 9 Andrew and Glenbard West. The Porters simply exploded offensively, blasting Andrew 15-4 and Glenbard West 14-1. In the Andrew contest, Western Illinois-bound catcher Lia Romeo was hit by a pitch in her first at-bat, then hit back by blasting three consecutive home runs. Romeo finished with seven RBI in that game, then added three more hits to her resume in the next two games. “That was crazy,” Romeo said of her trio of roundtrippers. “Last year I don’t even think I hit three in a season, let alone in a game. I’ve never hit that well, ever, in a game. “The first one I didn’t even know was over (the fence). I was still going to second and (assistant coach Rachel) Gensch told me it was out. I didn’t think the second one was over either. But the third one I hit and was like, ‘OK, I felt it.'” Romeo had plenty of company in the heavy hitters parade. Junior Taylor Weissenhofer hit two bombs, while Brianna Carney, Tierney Bottino and Melissa Stoch had one each. Amanda Oberc and Weissenhofer were the winning pitchers in the first two games. Kelly Bowler then went to the circle against Providence and shone with 12 strikeouts. But her offensive support wasn’t quite as plentiful. The Porters took a 2-0 lead with a run in the second inning on a double by Jenn Bond and an RBI single by Katelyn Hair, and another in the fourth on a bloop single by Romeo and an RBI single by Allie Phad. Providence tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Caroline Casper reached on a dropped fly ball, Allie Strick walked, and both scored on a two-out single by Ellie Bartosz. Lockport threatened against Providence hurler Amanda Wilson in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Wilson shut the door both times. Downers North 4-7, Glenbard East 0-0: In Game 1 Dale Rendek fanned 11 for the complete-game win for No. 14 Downers North (5-0). In Game 2 Kendall Rendek struck out 12 and homered. By staff reports Suburban Life Publications Posted Mar 31, 2011 @ 01:31 PM Downers Grove, IL — Even a key injury can only slightly dampen Downers Grove North’s hopes. Elaine Heflin (back injury) will miss the season after a great freshman year as a pitcher and hitter last spring. But the Trojans still feature mound strength and six starters from its school-record 28-win season. “That’s a big blow,” coach Mark Magro said of Heflin. “We can’t replace her presence on the mound, but we hope she’ll come back stronger and healthier as a junior.” And the Trojans still have two excellent arms in four-year pitcher Kendall Ryndak and her talented freshman sister, Dale. “(Innings) will be split pretty evenly, similar to last year when we pitched Kendall and Heflin in the same game,” Magro said. “I’m more worried about catcher (with freshmen Kelsey Gockman and Ali Woitovich). Although I think they’re very good, it’s a big adjustment for them.” If either or both play anything like last year’s freshmen starters Heflin, Brittany Nagy and Carolyn Nojiri, there will be no cause for concern. “Our infield is set,” Magro said. “Carolyn is a great athlete and I think it’ll be a really good year for her. (Katie) Hunzinger is so solid at shortstop, Nagy fields everything at third base and Jenna Butler is back at first base.” Offensive catalyst Rachel Bradley returns in the outfield, where Sarah Anderson, Kendall Ryndak, Maddie Wojciak and freshman Rowan McGuire also figure into the mix. Sam Yeager’s move from badminton to softball provides another strong bat. “We’re solid pitching and defensively,” Magro said. “If we can just get a couple runs, I think we’ll be sitting pretty.” Copyright 2011 South DuPage County Preps. Some rights reserved *********************** April 4th Naperville North softball coach Jerry Kedziora missed a good one. Kedziora, who was absent from the Huskies’ nonconference game against Oswego due to a family commitment, missed Naperville North post 18 hits in the 18-10 win over the Panthers on the road Monday. “We have some big sticks,” Naperville North assistant coach Laurie Davidson said. “Our kids just go up there hacking. Fortunately the kids were able to put the bat on the ball. We haven’t practiced in over a week, so that’s a nice way to come back.” Oswego (1-4) led 4-1 in the bottom of the second after a three-run first inning. The Panthers also had two-run home runs by Brandi Reiss in the fourth and Shianne Williams in the fifth. They finished with 12 hits. “The offense was there; it has been the past couple of games. We just really have to pick up our defense,” Oswego coach Lindsay Hejtmanek said. “We gave up too many unearned runs. We just have to pick up our defense; our offense is definitely there.” Making the difference for the Huskies were consecutive five-run innings in the fourth and fifth. Huskies leadoff hitter Sammy Marshall scored four of the five times she was on base. She also had an RBI double and three of Naperville North’s seven stolen bases. “When she gets on, chances are, she’s scoring,” Davidson said. “She’s just a heads-up base runner.” For the Huskies, Kendall Vassar scored four runs, finishing with three hits. Kathleen Hahne had a four-hit outing, with three doubles and four RBIs. Caitlyn Warren finished with 4 for 5, 3 rbi, 2 SB, throw out at the plate!
