INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Junior Lauren McNulty slugged two home runs to help lift Butler to an 8-4 come-from-behind victory over Indiana State in the first game at the newly-renovated Butler Softball Field on Thursday (March 24). The non-league win boosted the Bulldogs to 12-8 on the season.
McNulty's first shot, a three-run blast, helped spark a six-run fifth inning that gave the Bulldogs the lead for good. Her second round-tripper an inning later closed out Butler's scoring. McNulty finished the home-opener with three hits in four trips to the plate, four runs batted in and two runs scored.
Indiana State (9-12) grabbed a 2-0 lead off of Butler starter Leah Bry in the third inning, but the Bulldogs cut the margin in half on a run-scoring single by Jessica Huey in the bottom of the inning. The Sycamores added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to go on top 3-1.
Senior Erin Jackson started Butler's fifth-inning rally with a single, and she scored the first of the six runs on a single by Meaghan Sullivan. Junior Erin Falkenberry walked, and, following a sacrifice bunt by Huey, McNulty then gave Butler the lead with her three-run blast. A single by Mallory Winters, a double by Kayla Gray and a walk to Lauren Ott loaded the bases for Jackson, who delivered a two-run double.
Junior Breanna Fisher, who relieved Bry in the fourth inning, picked up the victory with two innings of work. Senior Jennifer Chasteen blanked the Sycamores over the final two innings.
The Bulldogs, led by McNulty and Jackson, unleashed a 10-hit attack in their first home game. Jackson finished with three hits, two runs scored and two RBI's.
Butler is scheduled to begin Horizon League play with a three-game series at UIC on Saturday and Sunday, March 26-27.
