Sandburg outlasts Oak Lawn

The Oak Lawn Spartans gave the Sandburg Eagles all they could handle Tuesday in Orland Park.

But in the end, the Eagles eventually handled the Spartans 2-1 in nine innings.

The winning run occurred when Jess Roche led off the Sandburg ninth with a single and took second on Katie Pistello's sacrifice bunt.

Pinch-hitter Gina Gawron then singled, sending Roche to third.

Ashley Conrad followed with the game-winning single and 2-1 win.

"It is obvious we have a lot to work on, but we worked hard to pull this game out," said Sandburg coach Jim Fabianski. "This was a team effort. (Andrea) Colosimo hit as well as pitched. Roche's two hits and the drive to center were big as was Conrad's game-winning hit. We played good defense when we needed it. We will get better every week."

The Spartans (1-2) actually grabbed the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning.

Nicole Moser drew a one-out walk off Eagle hurler Andrea Colosimo and promptly stole second base.

A Jaci Showan single moved Moser to third and Jessica Noble came through with a base hit to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

The Spartans preserved their slim lead behind the pitching of Noble, who was masterful through five innings.

But the Eagles notched the game at one in the sixth inning.

Colosimo started the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second base on Nicole Guskas' sacrifice bunt.

After a fly out, Roche smacked a long drive that tipped off Moser's glove in center field, allowing Colosimo to score the tying run.

"It felt good to help the team on the bases as well as the mound," Colosimo said. "We struggled at times today but we picked ourselves up and won the game. It was a long game and we never gave up."

The Spartans had a golden chance to score in the eighth inning.

Showan notched a one-out single and Noble followed with a ground ball that had the Eagles attempting to force Showan at second base. But the throw sailed into right field.

Sandburg right fielder Laura Christensen eventually chased down the ball and fired a perfect strike to nail Showan with the potential lead run.

That set up the Eagles dramatic ninth inning.

"We gave it a good shot, but fell short," said Noble, who was celebrating her birthday. "It's easy being on the mound for nine innings when your team is playing good defense. We are confident this is going to be a good year. Us seniors have been together a long time and this is our year."

Noble's counterpart, Colosimo, racked up 12 strikeouts and allowed seven hits.

Showan and Noble smacked two hits each, while Moser, Kelly Small and Jessica Finnigan each registered a single for Oak Lawn.

"We didn't get the key hit we needed it," said Oak Lawn coach Pat Mayer. "We stayed with them for nine innings. Our defense has gained a lot of confidence and we will get better every game."

Despite the tough loss, which dropped the Spartans to 1-2, Showan is confident the team will regroup.

"This was a great game and I was glad to be a part of it," Showan said. "Us seniors are hyped and it has created great chemistry on the team. We are looking forward to conference and ready to have a great season."
