Lake Park rips three homers in rout of Oak Park

Oak Park pitcher Seana Stillson rarely gives up home runs, and that makes Lake Park's performance Saturday more impressive.
The host Lancers slugged three homers off Stillson en route to a 10-4 victory in a battle of 2006 state softball quarterfinalists in Roselle.

Third baseman Nicole Dimiceli started the barrage in the first with a two-run blast, her third of the season. A solo shot by Shannon Starr made it 4-0 in the third, and a two-run homer by Alexis Munaco with Dimiceli aboard began a six-run sixth, which included a two-run double off the fence by winning pitcher Missy Mazur.

''I'm just trying to make contact, but the home runs are really great,'' said Dimiceli, who hit five homers last season. ''I'm surprised that we got that many off of her because she's really good. But we're doing a lot of hitting, and it's paying off.''

Five Lake Park players have combined for 10 home runs. The Lancers (4-2) had nine hits against Stillson (2-2), including two each by Dimiceli, Starr and Carly Willert.

''In my three years here, I've really tried to focus on hitting,'' Lake Park coach Cray Allen said. ''Thank God it looks like it's starting to pay off. I had a meeting with my seniors, and I challenged them ... to start hitting right out of the gate, and they've taken it to heart.''

Oak Park (4-2) couldn't get a clutch hit, despite drawing nine walks off Mazur (2-1), who gave up three hits and struck out eight.

The Huskies scored three unearned runs in the fifth after Mary Zinni's leadoff double to cut the deficit to 4-3. But a diving catch by left fielder Vicky Tomaka prevented the tying run from scoring.

''They hit the ball very well,'' Oak Park coach Mel Kolbusz said. ''They just beat our brains in. [Stillson] rarely gives up runs, period. Good thing it's March, not June.''

OAK FOREST 3, LINCOLN-WAY EAST 2: Amanda Sheppard drove in two runs and Ryan Boss the other as the visiting Bengals (4-2) beat the No. 10 Griffins.

Jennifer Burns (2-1) allowed five hits and struck out 11 in a complete game for Lincoln-Way East.

Alisa Goler and Ashley Linhart each had an RBI for the Griffins (3-2).

LINCOLN-WAY CENTRAL 2, JOLIET CATHOLIC 1: Gabe Gavoni homered, and Alicia Abbott went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the host No. 20 Knights (4-0). Winning pitcher Carly DeMarco threw a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out eight.

GLENBARD NORTH 8-2, YORK 0-1: Hannah Santora tossed a complete-game shutout for the No. 6 Panthers (6-0) in the opener. Santora allowed just one hit and struck out 18. Sarah McGown and Bri DiGioia each homered. In Game 2, Stephanie Lori struck out 11 in a complete game. DiGioia added two doubles.

ANDREW 7, EVERGREEN PARK 1: Julie Love homered, and Sarah Benak scored two runs for the host Thunderbolts (5-1).

FEFENWICK 5, LANE 0: Erin Kelly (5-0) struck out 12 in the complete-game shutout. Bridget Lally was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI for the host Friars (5-0).

PLAINFIELD CENTRAL 1, YORKVILLE 0: Brittney Adcox pitched a complete game, allowing three hits and striking out 11. Sarah Hurley homered for the host No. 9 Wildcats.

AT BARRINGTON: The Fillies (9-1) edged Mundelein 1-0 in nine innings in their second game of the Barrington Quad. Claire Voris (9-1) pitched a complete game and struck out nine.

Michal Jane Maropis had the game-winning single in the top of the ninth inning.

Earlier, Barrington defeated Stevenson 3-2 behind the arm and bat of Voris. The senior pitcher, who was 3-for-4, struck out eight and didn't allow an earned run in 6 2/3 innings.
