Somethign I saw posted on another site that I missed somehow ...
Sandburg's the One in girls softball April 1, 2007 By Dennis Bowling, The Star The Southland has always been regarded as the state's premiere region for high school softball talent.
And that distinction should remain firmly intact with the amount of talent residing in our softball-rich region.

Sandburg High School softball players Ashley Conrad (from left), Andrea Colosimo, Jami Duncan and Sara Olson -- all seniors -- with head coach Jim Fabianski and assistant coach Theresa Zambuto. (Art VassyStar Newspapers) When it came to selecting The Star's Preseason No. 1 team, Sandburg had the most returning talent of all and garnered the honor.
As a matter of fact, this marks the second consecutive season the Eagles have landed on top in The Star.
However, Sandburg, boasting the one-two pitching punch of Sara Olson and Andrea Colosimo, will have its work cut out to remain on top the entire season.
The usual cast of prime-time characters-- Beecher, Lincoln-Way East, Lockport and Lincoln-Way Central-- are all gunning for Sandburg.
And in the end, Lemont, Marist, Stagg, Richards and Oak Forest may have something to say about who slips into the No. 1 spot as well.
And, remember, ladies. It's not where you start in our poll, but where you finish in June.
The last team standing will finish on top and, hopefully, with the state championship in tow.
Here's a closer look at The Star's Top 10:
1.SANDBURG
Having an established No. 1 starter is a luxury many teams do not have. Sandburg not only has one ace, it has two.
The Eagles feature two of the best arms in the Southland in seniors Sara Olson and Andrea Colosimo.
Colosimo was lights out last year with an ERA of 0.83, while Olson contributed on the mound (21 wins) as well as in the batter's box (.435 batting average).
But that just begins to tap into the depth of the Eagles, who feature all-conference returnees in catcher Ashley Conrad and outfielder Jami Duncan.
With the right balance of pitching and offense, Sandburg head coach Jim Fabianski is confident his team will come out strong this season.
The Eagles have made the trip down to the state finals 10 of the last 15 year and three years in a row. With players like Olson and Colosimo leading the way, Sandburg is looking to extend its streak to four.
2. LOCKPORT
Although Porter coach Marissa Chovanec has the tough job of replacing four-year starter and two-time all-stater Angela Findlay, in addition to all-conference players like Kelly Dyer, Breanne Kronberg and Stephanie Noel, there's still plenty of talent on hand from a squad that went 27-11 and advanced to the sectional championship game a year ago.
Senior pitchers Sarah Porzel (St. Ambrose) and Kim Malacina (St. Francis) will be joined on the mound by promising sophomore Dana Bowler.
Junior Katelyn Braget hasn't played on the varsity prior to this season, but the center fielder is already committed to DePaul. She'll be joined in the outfield by senior Hannah Carter. Other talented youngsters on the squad include sophomores such as catcher Sam Stanicek, second baseman Kayleigh Bertram and freshman shortstop Amanda Stanton.
3. LINCOLN-WAY EAST
Head coach Aimee Lonigro has outstanding mound support in seniors Jennifer Burns (7-3, 60 strikeouts) and Brittany McElmury (7-3, 70 strikeouts). That luxury, combined with seven returning players from last year's team that finished 23-9-1, should enable the Griffins to have a strong season. Burns is headed to Robert Morris and McElmury to Illinois State University.
The Griffins are led by University of Georgia-bound senior shortstop Alisa Goler (.400, 18 doubles), second baseman Christina Signore (.300, SIU-Edwardsville), left fielder Lisa Gryczewski (St. Xavier), right fielder Kelly Laas (St. Cloud State), third baseman Caitlin Dolan (St. Francis), catcher Brianna Lizen (13 of 16 thrown out), first baseman Maggie Kerrigan and center fielder Ashley Linhart.
4. MARIST
The Redhawks are coming off a 2006 season which saw the ESCC powerhouse finish 20-8 with a 16-2 conference record.
With 10 seniors returning from that squad, including ESCC MVP Colleen Biebel, Marist is poised for another postseason run. Biebel, along with senior Kellie Snooks, will head up a deep pitching rotation which should benefit from a defense that returns almost all position players from a year ago.
Senior Heather Sundin (.367) was an all-conference selection a year ago and will lead the Redhawks, who also feature players like catcher Nikki Marinec, first baseman Cassie Cappetto, outfielder Courtney Chigaros and infielder Stacy Harte.
With a roster full of college talent (nine of the 10 seniors have committed to play at the college level), Marist could make its first trip to Peoria.
5. BEECHER
Head coach Kevin Hayhurst has eight returning players from last year's team that finished 36-1.
Junior pitcher Alex Lagesse is stronger and more experienced. She was 16-0, with an 0.19 ERA and 152 strikeouts and just five walks last year. Senior twin sisters Jenna Grim (catcher) will be more of a take charge player, while Jacqueline Grim (first base) is as good as it gets defensively. Both are headed to Loyola University. Senior center fielder Jill Jacobson, who will attend Valparaiso University, has a great arm and covers plenty of ground.
Third baseman Jaci Amran, senior right fielder Courtney Wehling, junior pitcher Megan Willie and senior shortstop Rachel Krabbe are all key returning contributors.
6. LINCOLN-WAY CENTRAL
The Knights appear to have lost a lot from last year's 32-3 squad with the graduation of players like longtime pitcher Amy Solava and two other all-conference picks, Julie DePolo and Chaleen Rumpf. But coach Dick Mandella will be able to rely on the return of three other all-conference players who figure to help Central to another successful season.
Seniors Alicia Abbott and Carly DeMarco, who are both headed to the University of Illinois at Chicago, and junior Gabe Gavoni all played major roles on last year's squad. First baseman Abbott hit .515 with 54 hits and 41 RBI while pitcher/shortstop DeMarco batted .327 and also went 9-0 with 77 strikeouts and an 0.68 ERA on the mound. Second baseman Gavoni hit .390 with 23 RBI a year ago for Central.
Others to watch are senior shortstop Alex Weber, senior catcher Sarah Shizas, junior outfielders Cassie Redman and Rachel Larson, junior third baseman Brittnie Boerema and junior Courtney Dunker.
7. LEMONT
Suzie Rzegocki was selected as one of the top players in Illinois a year ago, and with good reason. The Purdue University-bound senior was a dominating force on the mound for the 29-7 Indians.
She posted a 24-5 record which featured 21 shutouts, 12 no-hitters and 11 one-hitters and owned an 0.17 ERA. In addition, she struck out a state-record 445 batters while allowing just 25 walks and 27 hits.
New coach Christine Traina hopes to compliment her outstanding pitcher with returnees such as second baseman Shannon Keefe, the team's top hitter in 2006, as well as shortstop Lauren Panek, catcher Torrie Mack and third baseman Ariana Challenger.
8. STAGG
While the Chargers were competitive last season in the rugged SouthWest Suburban Blue conference, head coach Missy Mason is hoping her team can make bigger gains this season.
Stagg finished 17-15 last season but have its entire infield back from that squad.
Senior all-conference shortstop Brittany Hannigan, all-conference junior catcher Jackie Roth, junior second baseman Julie Sherman and junior first baseman Carli Raisutis should produce a more powerful and consistent offense this spring. .
Stagg will look to junior Tricia Klutcharch to shut down the opposing offense. Klutcharch finished the season with a 1.56 ERA as a sophomore.
9. RICHARDS
The SICA North champs will look to continue their power over conference foes after finishing a perfect 11-0 last season in conference play.
Senior pitcher Brittany LeBeau posted a record of 24-5 with a 1.20 ERA last year. She will look to do more of the same this season with a mix of veterans and youth.
Third baseman Nicole Costello (.471), outfielder Nicki Barrett (.427), catcher Amanda Hankes and first baseman Brittany Arrington headline a strong senior class for the Bulldogs. Junior Megan O'Brien is a two-way threat at the plate (.303) and in the field as the team's center fielder.
Richards will also have three sophomores and two freshmen that should play key roles for head coach Julie Folliard.
10. OAK FOREST
The Bengals are heavy on experience and talent. First baseman Courtney Murphy is one of the area's most established hitters and pitcher Diana Pickrum recorded 16 wins a year ago. With this group, Pickrum should crack the 20-win plateau.
Catcher Carly Norton and outfielder Meghan Friel are all-conference returnees hoping to inflate their production at the plate. Third baseman Cassie Rice is a meddling presence with her slap-bunting skills. She should wreak havoc on opposing infields.
Oak Forest has all the pieces in place to match or exceed last year's 24-10
