WACO, TEXAS – The Orange softball team opened the 2008 campaign with a pair of loses on Friday at the Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor. SU first game ended in dramatic fashion with Centenary (1-7) just sneaking by with a 4-3 win. During game two, No. 7/10 Baylor (1-0) got the best of the Orange, 8-0, in six innings.
"We just keep talking about that each day that we just have to get better and better," said head coach Leigh Ross. "Whatever happens in each game we just have to take it and process it. Instead of practicing and evaluating, now we've played two games and we can see our strong and weak areas."
Third baseman Hallie Gibbs began her career with a bang by going deep on her very first career at-bat, becoming the first SU freshman to accomplish the feat. Gibbs also made an impact defensively by handling two difficult groundballs during the second game. She fielded a hard-hit ball down the leftfield line on a backhand and threw to junior first baseman Nicole Miller – the throw ended the first inning and left one Baylor runner stranded.
Her second defensive beauty came in the second when she cut off a ball that was headed threw the left side. Gibbs then made a running throw just in time to get the runner.
"You can just see the potential in Hallie," said associate head coach Kyle Jamieson. "She hit the home run in the first game and then hit a foul ball even further in the second game – this is just her first day of collegiate ball."
Miller had a great showing at the plate in the first game by going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Junior second baseman Lindsay Wasek, senior right fielder Rachel Tilford and junior catcher Amy Kelley each registered their first hits of the season.
In that game with the score tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth and Kelley on third, Miller cranked a single to leftfield to give the Orange a 3-2 lead.
Kelley led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a groundout by junior designated player Jordan Rosen.
Miller also drove in the Orange's second run of the second inning with a two-out single to score Tilford.
Earlier in the inning, Gibbs hit the record-setting homerun over the leftfield fence to erase Centenary's 1-0 first-inning lead.
Sophomore pitcher Brittany Gardner was given the start on the mound and froze the first batter of the season. She finished with three strikeouts in three innings of work before senior utility player Chanel Roehner replaced her in the fourth.
Roehner, who started the game at centerfield, pitched 3.1 and was replaced in the seventh by freshman Angie Sagnelli.
Sagnelli entered the game with the score tied, 3-3, thanks to a leadoff homerun by Centenary freshman Caitlin Cavarra. The Ladies took the lead on a sacrifice fly to leftfield by sophomore Haley Bassett.
Roehner was credited with the loss, while Centenary sophomore Ryan Thacker earned the victory.
During game two, freshman designated player Tawni Irvine registered her first career hit when she singled in the fifth inning to spoil Baylor junior pitcher Jenny Isham's no-hitter.
"We got all four of our freshman into the game against Baylor, one of the best teams in the country," Jamieson said. "That experience can only help them and us in the future."
Sagnelli made her first career start and pitched 3.0 innings, allowed four earned runs and struck out one. Gardner supplied relief and pitched 2.0 innings, allowed three earned runs and struck out three.
Isham tallied the win for the Lady's Bears by pitching 5.0 innings, while junior Brittany Turner pitched 1.0 innings in relief.
The Orange is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 16 for day two of the classic. SU begins the day with a rematch against Centenary at 11 a.m. and then Purdue at 1:30 p.m.
