Valencia Tops First USA Today/NFCA High School Poll of 2007 04/12/07 - NFCA Release
Valencia High School out of California claimed the top spot in the inaugural USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25 Poll of 2007 of 2007, the association announced Thursday.
Valencia, which is off to a 16-1 start to the season, leads a top five in which only one team finished in the 2006 final poll. Buena (Ariz.) claimed second after starting the season with a 21-3 year, and Naples (Fla.) took the third position following a 24-0 start to the year. Camarillo, who joins Valencia as one of four teams from the state in the poll, landed at No. 4.
Only three teams found their way into the poll after finishing 2006 ranked. Canyon del Oro (Ariz.) starts 2007 in the fifth spot after finishing 14th a year ago, while last season’s No. 2 team, Central Cabarrus (N.C.), immediately follows at No. 6.
Justin Northwest (Texas), Spruce Creek (Fla.), Jesuit (Ore.) and Kennedy (Calif.) round out the top 10.
Smithson Valley out of Texas landed in the poll at No. 11 after starting the season 21-1 in the state’s 5A classification. St. Amant (La.) begins the year in the 12th spot after finishing eighth a year ago.
Red Mountain (Ariz.) came in a No. 13, followed by Jacksonville Mandarin (Fla.), Brentwood (Tenn.) and Burleson (Texas). Sheldon (Calif.) debuted at No. 17, while Niceville (Fla.) followed at No. 18. North Canton Hoover from Ohio and Broad Run (Va.) landed at Nos. 19 and 20, respectively.
Carl Sandburg (Ill.), Shadle Park (Wash.), Butler (N.C.), Piedra Vista (N.M.) and Layton (Utah) round out the first poll, which runs weekly through June 21.
