Right on, DeMarco

NEW LENOX -- In memory of The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, Lincoln-Way Central High School senior Carly DeMarco has shifted to the southpaw style, swinging down as The Slapper Formerly Known as a Right-Handed Hitter.

A prince of a batter in the second spot last spring with a .327 average and 11 RBIs, DeMarco's brand-new duty for the 2007 Knights became the demarcation point as their leadoff spark -- reaching base for red-hot lefty Cassie Redman and power punchers Alicia Abbott and Courtney Dunker.

Except for one little problem ...

"I've been hitting the ball, just not in the right places," DeMarco admitted. "I'm kind of working on placing the ball with the slap and everything, and this was a good day to come out here and practice it. It was good to hit the ball well and to get on base."

The getting was good Monday for DeMarco. In Prince parlance, it would be called a Red-and-Black Rain as the UIC-bound shortstop/pitcher went 3-for-4 with a double and scored twice, churning the Knights to a 10-2 SouthWest Suburban Conference crossover softball victory over Bolingbrook.

A slam dunk in the cleanup hole, junior DH Dunker finished 2-for-2 with an RBI single, a double and a walk for Lincoln-Way Central (9-1, 2-0). Abbott, the senior first baseman and UIC recruit, added a 2-for-4, 2-run effort, while junior third baseman Brittnie Boerema boomed an RBI double to left-center as the barometer of the Knights' lethal 4-run second inning.

Following the fuse of DeMarco's ground-smacking delivery, Redman singled, sacrificed and also scored twice to further ignite the Knights. Junior second baseman/pitcher Gabe Gavoni, junior outfielder Rachel Larson and junior pinch-hitter Aly Holzhauer all had RBI singles, but the vastly improved Raiders (3-5, 0-2) rallied on Carolyn Rupsis' 2-run homer.

Except for one tiny problem ...

"That has been the strength of our team," said Lincoln-Way Central coach Dick Mandella, who was celebrating his "25th" birthday. "In the six years I've been here, our strength always has been pitching and defense, and I think this year so far, our strength is hitting and our ability to play defense. We have a good hitting team, there's no question about it.

"If you look at Carly, she's doing something entirely different than she has ever done in slapping, and she stepped up with a good game. Courtney has been unbelievable, she's a great hitter, and Abbott has been consistent. Redman has been phenomenal. Larson's hitting. We're hitting."
