Softball Roundup Lockport has answer for Richards' LeBeau
April 22, 2007 By Tony Baranek Staff writer Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec can rest easy knowing her Porters not only listen to what she says, they also follow her instructions.
Softball First baseman Jenny Festin sure does.
Prior to Saturday's 6-2 nonconference victory over host Richards, Festin said Chovanec gave some tips on how to bat against Bulldogs ace Brittany LeBeau.
"She has a really good curveball," Festin said of LeBeau. "Coach told us to move up (in the batter's box) and catch it before it drops.''
Festin wound up with three hits, and the Porters as a team had 10.
"She was still throwing them great," Festin said of LeBeau. "But we adjusted to it."
Kim Malacina was the winning pitcher for the No. 7 Porters (9-4), allowing no runs on two hits in five innings. Dana Bowler went the final two innings, giving up a pair of runs in the seventh.
No. 10 Richards fell to 9-5.
Festin had company at the top of the hit leaderboard for Lockport. Teammate Brittany Wilson went 3-for-3 with a walk. Wilson drove in the first Porters run in the top of the third with a two-out double that scored Melissa Kamba (walk).
Lockport threatened again in the fourth, but LeBeau pitched masterfully out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam. She hurt herself, though, in the fourth, when after a Bulldogs error gave the Porters a baserunner, she walked four batters to force in two runs.
After that, LeBeau regained her control, but Lockport started swinging again. Singles by Kayleigh Bertram and Wilson and a double by Samantha Stanicek keyed a two-run sixth. An RBI double by Katelyn Braget made it 6-0 in the seventh.
Richards battled to the end, a double by Cristen Fadden highlighting a two-run outburst, but it was too little, too late.
Malacina struck out five Bulldogs during her five shutout innings. The right-hander was on the ropes just once, when Ashley Tenerelli smacked a two-out double in the fifth. Malacina ended the threat by getting Nicki Barrett on a tap back to the mound.
"I felt good. As soon as I started warming up, I felt good," Malacina said. "The first inning went well, but they were kind of getting their bats around and hitting some fly balls, so we made adjustments. We went from there.''
It was a definite change in fortune for Richards, which had scored a total of 28 runs in its previous two games.
"Well, we're still growing as a team," Bulldogs coach Julie Folliard said. "Every day we've been getting better. There were a couple of situations (Saturday) where we still need to grow, but we've been playing pretty well lately.
"That's a good team. Lockport is a good team. They put a lot of pressure on, and that was good. It's good for us to play good teams like that."
No. 1 Sandburg 12-13, Morris 0-0
Sara Olson (9-1) pitched a no-hitter and struck out seven as visiting Sandburg (14-1) won the first game of the nonconference doubleheader in five innings. Olson kept up the attack in Game 2, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Andrea Colosimo (5-0) pitched a three-hitter and fanned seven for the Eagles in the six-inning contest.

Convincing Game 2 win salvages split By Jason Rossi Downers Grove Reporter Tue Apr 24, 2007, 03:17 PM CDT Story Tools: Email This | Print This Downers Grove, IL - Finally, a softball game between Downers Grove North and Glenbard South that didn’t come down to the last at-bat. When the two schools met for a doubleheader Saturday in Glen Ellyn, the Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 lead en route to a 5-2 win in Game 2 that salvaged a split with the Raiders. When the Trojans and Raiders met last season, Downers North scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5 win. Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader was far tamer. “We played real good in the second game,” said Downers North head coach Mark Magro, whose team was coming off a huge 3-1 win Friday over 2006 state quarterfinalist Oak Park. “We played good defense, got great pitching and had timely hitting.”
After one turn through the lineup in Game 2 the Trojans (9-8 overall and 2-0 in the West Suburban Silver) started to figure out Glenbard South pitcher Jill Trzaska. Lauren McNulty, who tied Game 1 at 4-4 with a home run in the top of the seventh before Glenbard South (12-4) eked out a 5-4 win in its half of the frame, led off the fourth inning with an infield single and moved to second on Ellen Jagielo’s groundout to the right side. After Amanda Tran reached on an error, both she and McNulty moved up a base on a wild pitch before scoring on Melissa Weiss’ single. Downers North tacked on another run in the top of the fifth when Maddie Honn plated Katie Iser, who singled to lead off the frame. That was all the support pitcher Jules Burton needed. She yielded just two hits through four innings. Two Raider hits in the fifth and seventh led to one run in each stanza, but Glenbard South never seriously threatened. When Trzaska led off the fifth with single and scored on Therese O’Shea’s single up the middle to trim the Trojans’ lead to 3-1, they answered with two insurance runs in the sixth. Tran lifted a double into the gap in left center field and trotted to third when Weiss singled. When Iser grounded to second base with one out, Weiss moved to third and Tran beat the throw home for a 4-1 lead. Weiss came home when Bonnie Hansen grounded out. Glenbard South managed a run in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t jump-start a two-out rally as the Trojans held on for the 5-2 win. In Glenbard South head coach Julie Fonda’s eyes, it was atypical errors in the field (two in Game 2) and on the base paths (one runner caught stealing, one gunned down going from first to third on a sacrifice bunt and one that failed to reach home from second on a single) that cost her team. “We made some goofy plays in the field and on base that are uncharacteristic of us,” Fonda said. “Against a team like Downers Grove North that comes back to bite you.”
