Frosh escorts coach to 600
April 24, 2007 BY MATT LE CREN A career day by freshman shortstop Olivia Roback highlighted a 17-hit attack that gave Elk Grove a 13-2 softball victory in six innings Monday over host Buffalo Grove and Grenadiers coach Ken Grams his 600th victory. Grams, 600-283 in 27 seasons, is the sixth softball coach in IHSA history to win 600. His daughter, Laurie, son Deron and four-year-old grandson Wilson watched as Roback ripped a double to start a six-run first inning for Elk Grove (15-3, 4-2 Mid-Suburban East).
Roback finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and her first career home run, a three-run shot in the third that made it 10-1.
''This is probably my best day so far,'' Roback said. ''It was good timing that it was Coach Grams' 600th. I'm glad to be a part of it. It's a good experience.''
Roback's home run epitomized the day.
''Olivia came running around third with the biggest smile I think I've ever seen in a softball game, saying 'I've never done that,' '' Grams said. ''That just made for a good, upbeat feeling about things.''
Buffalo Grove's Katie Lee made the best catch Grams said he has ever witnessed to rob Kayla Mahoney of a home run, but Mahoney doubled and scored twice and drove in three. She was one of six Grenadiers with at least two hits. Stephanie Dolce had three hits and winning pitcher Stephanie Maday (10-2) added a two-run double.
Stephanie Rudolfi went 3-for-3 for Buffalo Grove (9-6, 3-3) and Jessica Martin was 2-for-2.
• • Brittnie Boerema scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth as No. 3 Lincoln-Way Central rallied past visiting Lincoln-Way East 5-4 in the Southwest Suburban Red.
Tied 4-4, Boerema led off the sixth by slicing a double down the right-field line. She scored when Sarah Shizas' sacrifice bunt was thrown away.
Lincoln-Way East (10-5, 4-2) scored three unearned runs in the first to take a 3-0 lead.
The Knights (13-2, 6-0) tied it 3-3 in the second on Gabe Gavoni's two-run homer and an error.
Sophomore Jackie Dugan (5-1) got the victory with four innings of scoreless relief. She allowed two hits, walked one and struck out four.
Ashley Linhart was 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Griffins.
Randy Whalen
• • Lockport upset No. 8 Oak Forest 4-0 behind the bat of Megan Jones.
Jones went 2-for-3 with four RBI for the visiting Porters (10-4).

Bolingbrook homers KO Joliet
April 24, 2007 from staff reports JOLIET -- A few big hits during a softball game can make all the difference.
Bolingbrook High School's Carolyn Rupsis and Camille Ramsey provided those big blasts on Monday during a SouthWest Suburban crossover game against Joliet Township.
Rupsis smacked a solo home run in the top of the seventh to break a 5-5 tie and give Bolingbrook a 6-5 win over the Steelmen. Ramsey belted a grand slam an inning earlier to tie the game at 5.
Kelsey Obzera tripled for the Raiders (8-7, 2-4). Alyssa Ronald, Jessy Bush and Katie Lepper also had big hits.
