THE NIGHT BEFORE NATIONALS by Coach Lisa
'Twas the night before Nationals, when all through the team, Not a player was talking, not even Colleen; The bats were hung by the dugout with care, In hopes that Coach Dave and the umpires soon would be there; Taylor and Brie were nestled, knowing the hard work was worthwhile, While visions of winning nationals made Lora smile; And coach Lisa in her 'kerchief, and Dan with his new hat and tee, Had just settled down for a long island iced tea, When out on the field there arose such a clatter, Abby sprang from the concession to see what was the matter. Away to the backstop Katy and Chelsea flew like a flash, Kicked over the balls, the bucket landed with a crash. The sun on the horizon of the Texas plains, Shown brightly as the Hawks continued to win all their games! When, what to Kristina and Katie's wondering eyes should appear, But a face painted loud man, and eight FATHERS with beers, With a big Southern drawl driver, pulling his pork and his beans, It was Hawk Webmaster Jeff, trying to look lean. More rapid than Hawks his entourage came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name; "Now, Brian! now, Dave! now, Mike and Mel! On, Jeff! on Paul! on, Chris and Coach Kel! To the top of the dugout! to the top of the foul pole! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" As the dry leaves fell from the Hawks lucky tree, Cindy fired her wiffles, and shouted with glee. So up to the centerfield fence the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of Catalysts, and our Webmaster too. And then, in a twinkling, Josie heard on the intercom, Clean up your room or your not going to prom. As Tierney drew in her hand, and was turning around, Down the backstop Webmaster Jeffie came with a bound. He was dressed all in purple, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with baby powder and bbq soot; A bundle of gloves he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack. His eyes - how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a plum cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, As his long teal beard hung down to his toes. The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old self, Rebecca and Panks laughed when they saw him, in spite of themselves; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Let Bridget know, she had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the bat bags; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the backstop he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. Danielle heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, "Happy Nationals to all, win the tourney tonight."
