KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Simpson College (IA) and Washington University (MO), a pair of strong NCAA Division III squads, handed University of St. Francis a pair of losses on the final day of its season-opening 12-game spring break trip to Florida.
USF took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of each contest, but could not score again in either game. Simpson defeated USF 6-1 and Washington claimed a 7-1 win over the Saints.
Junior second baseman Jamie Redman (Lincoln-Way Central H.S./New Lenox, IL) led off the first inning in each game for USF with a base hit. In each case, senior third baseman Jaci Warner (Plainfield Central H.S./Crest Hill, IL) followed two batters later with an RBI single.
The Saints managed just six hits in the opener as Simpson overtook USF with a run in the fourth and put the game away with a four-run fifth.
Washington caught the Saints with a single tally in its half of the first and scored the game-winning runs in a five-run fourth that featured a pair of home runs.
Washington pitcher Laurel Sagartz struck out 17 Saints in the seven-inning game. USF did manage to get six hits, including a double by freshman first baseman Lynley Louzensky (Tinley Park H.S./Oak Forest, IL) and a triple from freshman shortstop Beth Boezeman (Lincoln-Way East H.S,/Frankfort, IL).
USF completed its trip with a 7-5 record. The Saints dropped their last three games after starting the trip with a 7-2 mark. The three-game losing streak at the end of the trip marked the only time St. Francis lost consecutive games.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Senior right-hander Kerri Watt (Lincoln-Way Central H.S./New Lenox, IL) fired a four-hit, complete-game shutout in the first game of the day against the United States Merchant Marine Academy (NY) as University of St. Francis split a pair of games on day number five of its 12-game season-opening trip to Florida.
USF (7-3) blanked the Mariners, 4-0, in the 9 a.m. game, but fell to Westminster (PA), 6-4, in its second game.
Watt improved her record to 3-0 on the trip and recorded USF’s first shutout of the season. She scattered her four hits and allowed more than one base runner in only the first inning. She also struck out five, while walking two.

The Lady Saints dropped their second contest of the day, falling 8-0 to Greensboro College (NC).
Redman had two of the Saints’ six hits against Waynesburg (3-4) and scored the first and third runs. She led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and came around to score on a Waynesburg error. Her fifth-inning solo homer – her first of the young season – pushed the Saints’ lead to 3-1.
O’Shea scattered five hits over 5 1/3 innings and surrendered only one unearned run. She teamed with junior reliever and fellow Valparaiso Wheeler graduate Lisa Tharp (Valparaiso, IN) for the second straight time as Tharp earned her second save with 1 2/3 innings of hitless and scoreless relief.
USF ran into a talented Greensboro (17-2) team in the second game of the day. The Saints managed eight singles in the nightcap, with three of them coming from freshman center fielder Kendel Behrens (Morris H.S./Morris, IL). But the Saints had one runner thrown out at third when she slid past the bag and the next two hitters struck out.
In addition to Behrens’ three singles, USF got a multiple-hit game from another freshman as Beth Boezeman (Lincoln-Way East H.S./Frankfort, IL) knocked out a pair of singles. Boezeman also made her collegiate pitching debut, moving to the mound from shortstop in the third inning and working the final three frames.

USF snapped a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning by plating three runs. Jamie Redman's single to right field drove in the eventual winning run with a single to right field. Romeoville's Stacy Schultz followed with a two-run single up the middle to account for the three-run difference.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The University of St. Francis freshmen class enjoyed an outstanding day as the Saints split a pair of games against NAIA powerhouse Indiana Wesleyan on the second day of USF’s season-opening Florida trip Monday afternoon.
The Saints won the opener, 4-1, behind freshman pitcher Maggie O’Shea (Wheeler H.S./Valparaiso, IN) and dropped the nightcap, 9-4.
O’Shea fired six strong innings in her collegiate pitching debut, scattering seven hits and allowing only a solo home run to account for IWU’s lone run. O’Shea recorded no strikeouts but did not walk a single batter.
She was lifted in the bottom of the seventh in favor of closer Lisa Tharp (Wheeler H.S./Valparaiso, IN) after the first two hitters reached on singles. Tharp retired all three batters she faced for the save, her first of the season.

The Saints pounded Muhlenberg, 10-1, in their opener and rallied to defeat John Carroll, 5-3, on Sunday.
Senior third baseman Jaci Warner (Plainfield Central H.S./Crest Hill, IL) and freshman shortstop Beth Boezeman (Lincoln-Way East H.S./Frankfort, IL) were the offensive leaders in the Muhlenberg win.
Warner added to her USF home run record with her 30th career round-tripper, a two-run blast that broke a scoreless tie in the third inning. She later authored a triple and scored another run.
Boezeman made her collegiate debut a memorable one with three runs batted in. Her first came on a sacrifice fly in the fourth and the other two came home on a two-run single in the fifth.
