LAS VEGAS - The UNLV softball team (16-10) needed to warm up for its doubleheader against #17/15 Oregon (21-3) on the first day of the Eller Media Stadium Classic. The Rebels suffered a 10-1, six-inning setback to the Ducks in game one, but used timely hitting and good pitching to hand the visitors a 5-1 loss in game two. The loss is only the third for Oregon this season.
In the nightcap, the Rebels pushed out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a ball put in play by Brittany Meade. Jaci Hull began the inning with a chopper up the middle and proceeded to put herself in scoring position with a stolen base. Brittany Bolinger hit a deep fly to left that allowed Hull to tag and move to third. Meade then came up and hit a slow roller that Oregon's pitcher, Melissa Rice, tried to throw home, but the ball was dropped by the catcher, Courtney Shlee.
The score would remain 1-0 in UNLV's favor until Caitlyn Paus came up with one out and one on in the bottom of the fourth. Paus delivered a two-run home run that was hit on a string. Alyssia De La Torre, who was pinch-running for Meade, scored on the home run.
The Rebels pushed the score to 5-1 with a single run in the sixth. Hull and Bolinger got the inning going with back-to-back two out singles. Hull came around to score when Meade's ground ball was misplayed by Suzie Barnes at second.
Oregon's only offense in the game came in the sixth when the Ducks put their only run on the board. Barnes reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a Christie Robinson wild pitch. Sari Jenkins then came up and delivered a line drive off of Robinson's right shin that bounded towards third. Barnes took third on the hit and was joined in scoring position by Jenkins after she stole second. Jennifer Salling then delivered a single to right field to score Barnes, but Jenkins was gunned down at home by a throw by Paus to Bri Bernardi. Salling attempted to take second on the throw home, but Bernardi threw a strike to Hull covering second for the third out of the inning.
The Rebels added their sixth and final run of the game in the sixth on a double to left center by Jenn Newman. Kelli Fangonilo got on with a two-out single and then stole second. Brittany Freight took a base-on-balls to join Fangonilo on the base paths, prior to Newman's shot to the gap.
Robinson improved to 7-1 on the year and only allowed one run on six hits in 7.0 innings of work. She struck out five and walked none.
Rice (9-2) suffered the loss for Oregon. She surrendered five runs (four earned) on seven hits. In 6.0 innings of work, she struck out three and walked one.
The win over the Ducks was the first for UNLV over a ranked team since April 29, 2006, when the Rebels defeated then No. 24 (ESPN/USA Softball) San Diego State, 7-1, in Las Vegas.
In game one, Oregon came out on fire and UNLV had no answers as the Ducks won the six-inning contest, 10-1.
Oregon raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first, with help from a three-run home run off the bat of Ann Marie Topps, and added two more runs before UNLV finally got on the scoreboard.
The Rebels cut the deficit to four in the second on a sacrifice fly from Fangonilo to right. Paus began the inning with double to right and moved to third on a ground out.
The Ducks wound up scoring three more in the fourth and two in the sixth for their nine-run margin.
The Rebels used three pitchers in the contest with Stephanie Bregante (5-5) taking the loss after getting the start. Bregante lasted 1.2 innings and was responsible for five runs on six hits. Heather Slettvet relieved Bregante and lasted 3.1 innings. Slettvet gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits, while striking out five. Casey Thompson closed out the game with two strikeouts in 1.0 inning of relief.
Alicia Cook improved to 11-1 on the year with 6.0 innings of work. Cook allowed one run on five hits, while striking out six and walking one.
Next up for UNLV is a 6:00 pm contest against Harvard. Friday begins the full-slate of action of the Eller Media Stadium Classic. New Mexico State and Longwood get the day started at 9:00 am. Portland State and Miami (Ohio) round out the seven-team field. For full tournament information, check out the EMS Classic link on the right side of the softball page at UNLVRebels.com.
