Sara Olson struck out 15 and Andrea Colosimo knocked in the winning run in the seventh as No. 1 Sandburg squeaked past No. 7 Lockport 1-0 in a SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue game at Lockport.
The Eagles (17-1, 7-1) have won five in a row and 14 of their last 17 against Lockport (11-6, 3-5).
''It's exciting,'' said Olson, whose season high in strikeouts is 16. ''Lockport is a great team, but in the clutch, no one can do it like Andrea can.''
Porters pitcher Kim Malacina (3-2), who gave up three hits and a walk and struck out nine, had retired 17 in a row before Jami Duncan led off the seventh by reaching on the lone error of the game. Olson sacrificed her to second, and Colosimo got the hit that scored Duncan.
Olson walked three and allowed two hits, both to Rebecca Baltikas. In the bottom of the seventh, Baltikas led off with a double but was out trying for third.

Elite Twin Lakes tourney can launch a title run
May 3, 2007 BY STEVE T. GORCHES Post-Tribune staff writer
The numbers just keep growing every year, especially since teams don't usually pull out of this tournament. Among the 16 schools in the annual Twin Lakes Invitational, there have been 103 sectional titles, 37 regionals, 26 state finals appearances and eight state softball titles. All are increases from last year since only one team withdrew from the event.
Once programs receive a spot in the prestigious field, the largest of any regular-season softball tourney in the state, they don't give it up easily.
"Every year we get calls from 10 to 15 schools that want to get into the tournament," said Twin Lakes athletic director Scott Leverenz, who will oversee his second softball extravaganza.
"It really is fun. It's a fun kind of stress because you have a lot of great teams coming up, coming down or coming over. They say if you win this tournament, you're geared to do well in the state tourney."
Actually, that trend didn't prove true last year from a local standpoint after Andrean captured its second straight Twin Lakes title with a 2-0 victory over Lowell in the final. The 59ers were upset in the sectional by Kankakee Valley.
Coach Frank Podkul hopes this week's tourney can turn around some recent disturbing trends.
"We're languishing right now and that's hard for me to accept after 100 years of coaching," he said, only half tongue-in-cheek.
He's been at Andrean for 13 years after coaching at Bishop Noll previously. But he's been coaching long enough to know his team won't be experiencing a long postseason run if it keeps making four or five errors per game.
So Twin Lakes could be the elixir to fix what ails them.
"We need the kids to experience the big time," said Podkul, who's been taking the 59ers to the tourney for 12 years. "It's Twin Lakes and we want to do well. There's still some lessons to learn and growing up for this team."
Twin Lakes could be a boost to any of the five Northwest Indiana squads making the trip to Monticello this weekend, some more than others.
Besides Andrean, Hanover Central, Merrillville, Lowell and Munster will be competing for a nice trophy, medals for all the team members and valuable experience.
It could also provide a rematch, or more accurately, a three-match since three Lake Athletic Conference Black squads are in the field.
Last year, Lowell and Andrean met in the final with the 59ers winning 2-0 four days after the Red Devils beat them in conference play.
Lowell coach Pete Iussig remembers that vividly, so he didn't need to be reminded after his team just beat Andrean 4-0 this week on the same exact day.
"If I had my choice, I'd rather take the conference win," he said. "We're not too picky at Lowell."
Iussig says he's tried to get into the Twin Lakes Invite for years before finally moving to the top of the waiting list a couple years ago. You can bet he won't be pulling his team out anytime soon.
"It's about playing some teams you haven't seen before," Iussig said. "A lot of times girls have only been on the team two or three years, so seeing the same teams isn't a big deal. I also know a lot of the coaches and I get to see some of my friends from downstate at this tourney."
Andrean also lost to Munster last year on the Thursday before Twin Lakes. Those two teams play today and Munster coach Beth Vesa hopes they meet again on Saturday since they're in separate pools.
"If I'm going to play them, I'd much rather play them in the semifinals or championship," she said. "More than anything, (the invite) is a chance to play some competitive teams."
The Mustangs have already won a tournament this year -- the eight-team Carmel Invite -- so winning one twice as big with more challenging teams would be a huge boost.
Hanover Central could also use a boost as the PCC tourney looms, as well as a sectional in which it was eliminated right away last season.
They have never made it out of one of the four-team pools at Twin Lakes in eight years of participation.
"We've been stuck in with some good teams in our pool," Hanover coach Larry McMillen said. "It's tough to win games down there. It shows what you're made of and where your team is fitting into the season. It's not for the meek and mild."
Definitely not, but whoever survives five games in 24 hours could see the rewards later this month.

Masterful Malacina
May 3, 2007 By BILL SCHEIBE Asst. Sports Editor LOCKPORT -- As masterful as Mark Buehrle, the White Sox's no-hit ace pitcher, Lockport High School senior Kim Malacina whooshed through the Sandburg batting order Wednesday like a Yamaha speed boat leaving the marina.
For 6 innings, the University of St. Francis-bound righty silenced the Eagles' bats, retiring 17 straight after senior outfielder Jami Duncan grounded a one-out single to center in the top of the first -- Malacina's mound mood exuding ultimate uptempo.
For 6 innings, the University of St. Francis-bound righty silenced the Eagles' bats, retiring 17 straight after senior outfielder Jami Duncan grounded a one-out single to center in the top of the first -- Malacina's mound mood exuding ultimate uptempo.
Let's go, let's go, let's go.

» Click to enlarge image Lockport center fielder Katelyn Braget catches a line drive during Sandburg's 1-0 win over the Porters on Wednesday.
Let's go, let's go, let's go.
"I love the quick innings," she confirmed. "Like the (fourth) where we had a ground ball and two fly balls. Three in, three out, and end of story. I like to get in, get out. I'm not by myself. I have everybody behind me to back me up, I trust them to make the routine plays, and that's what we do."
That's precisely, however, what hampered the Porters. Malacina struck out 9 in a 3-hit, 1-walk masterpiece, but a leadoff error in the top of the seventh and a baserunning hiccup in the bottom half built the snowball of Lockport's 1-0 SouthWest Suburban Blue loss to senior-laden Sandburg.
Junior shortstop Rebecca Baltikas, the Illinois State recruit, went 2-for-3 for host Lockport (11-6, 3-5) and also started the Porters' seventh by blasting a double to the right-center warning track. The Eagles eliminated Baltikas, stretching for the triple, with a pair of perfect relay throws.
While Indiana-bound senior pitcher Sara Olson struck out 15 in her 2-hitter, Sandburg (17-1, 7-1) remained unbeaten against Lockport since the Porters swept the Eagles en route to the Class AA state title in 2004 -- the little, timing mistakes causing immediate reaction by Baltikas.
Uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh.
"It's tough ... it's very tough right now," said Baltikas, admirably answering the difficult questions. "We're surprised, but we're learning, and this will make us better in the end. We'll see them again."
"No, and we talked about it," Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec nodded, referring to whether she gave the go-sign. "Rebecca saw me as she's coming around second and then she had her head down, so she couldn't she whether to put the brakes on or not. It's tough, but it's OK."
Just as quickly as Malacina pitched, Chovanec pointed to the Porters' third inning. Junior first baseman Jenny Festin led off with a walk and reached second on a delayed steal before junior outfielder
