PREP SOFTBALL
ST. JOHN | Alexis Paz didn't know what to do when Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson called the junior third baseman over to speak to the media.
"I've never done that before," Paz said as she hopped out of the dugout after Friday's 3-2 Duneland Athletic Conference win by Times No. 1 Chesterton (8-0, 4-0) over the No. 2 Indians (7-1, 3-1).
Paz better get used to the attention, as her play in St. John attested to. She laced a three-run double in the second inning to give the Trojans an early lead. And her glove was a Hoover, getting nine putouts at the hot corner.
"We hit some bullets right at people, bullets," L.C. coach Keith Hauber said. "(Paz) has quick reflexes. That one she caught could've killed someone else playing there."
The Trojans hit the ball hard early against sophomore Jessica Dobson, who didn't have great control at the start. But an error in the second allowed all three runs to score. After a single by Laura Lange, L.C. third baseman Jen Kosinski tried to beat the runner to second on a sacrifice, but the ball flew into center field.
Paz's big double was the difference.
"This is the first game I got a lot of balls hit to me," Paz said. "Usually they go the other way."
Dobson settled down from the third to the sixth inning, allowing only one base runner.
Chesterton pitcher Dawn McClellan (6-0) had a perfect game through five innings, but Sam Michalski snapped it with a single to lead off the sixth. Sarah Fitzpatrick followed with another single. Two wild pitches allowed the run to score, but McClellan whiffed the next two batters to end the inning.
A triple by Kosinski to open the seventh got L.C. another run, on a RBI groundout by Ashley Michalski. But McClellan didn't allow any more damage.

I was lucky enough to freeze my you know what off this afternoon and watch Andrew hold a 3-1 lead into the 7th - only to be tied by Joliet - then have Andrew score 4 in the 11th for an 8-4 victory -- Hawks Steph Trapp and Nicole Winkler were both outstanding and contributed to the victory!

Lockport falls to Andrew
April 14, 2007 By Curt Herron sun-times news group TINLEY PARK -- Katelyn Braget's home run to lead off the game set a great tone for the Lockport High School softball team in Friday's SouthWest Suburban clash with Andrew.
And two innings later, things were really looking up for the Porters after Samantha Stanicek singled home Rebecca Baltikas to give her team a 2-0 lead.
But the tide suddenly turned in the bottom of that frame and the Thunderbolts made the most of the opportunity to help them rally for a 3-2 win to post their eighth consecutive victory.
"We had one bad inning," Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec said. "It started with a leadoff walk and then they had a couple of bloop hits, which you can't do anything about. We thought about putting their big hitter on, but it didn't work out that way and that definitely changed the momentum of the game.
"Then they scored the last two runs on wild pitches, which hurts since you want to make them earn it. But it's good that we'll have situations like this since it will make us better in the end. There are some things we need to work out, but when you can't practice to work on the little details, they're bound to bite you."
In the bottom of the third, the T-Bolts (8-1, 2-0) got things started when Kim Seidelmann led off with a walk against Porter starter Dana Bowler. Nicole Winkler sacrificed the runner to second and Kate Mollohan (3-for-3) singled her to third. But Mollohan was out trying to steal for the second out.
Erin Mollohan followed with a single that just landed inside the left-field foul line to cut Lockport's lead in half. Then Stephanie Trapp smacked a double to center to place runners at second and third.
Bowler's first wild pitch brought home Erin Mollohan and her next one scored Trapp to put the T-Bolts ahead for good. The Porter right-hander was relieved by Sarah Porzel at the end of the inning.
Lockport (6-2, 1-1) threatened to move back in front in the sixth, but T-Bolt freshman right-hander Breanna McGee (4-1), who got the complete-game victory, worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam.
Hannah Carter (2-for-3) led off with a single, Jenny Festin reached on a fielder's choice on an error on a force play and Kayleigh Bertram singled to load the bases.
But McGee worked her way out of the mess by getting a fly ball and then coaxing a 6-2-3 double play to preserve Andrew's 1-run advantage.
Porzel worked two innings before Kim Malacina pitched in the sixth to keep the Porters in the game. The Andrew pitcher retired the side in the seventh, however, to finish with an 8-hit performance.
Braget greeted McGee with a towering homer to left field to open the game. And then in the Porters' third, Baltikas led off with a single and scored on a single by Stanicek (2-for-4).
"It's Lockport and it's always fun to play them since Marissa does a fantastic job," said Andrew coach Jim Holba, the former coach at Joliet Township. "We knew coming in that we had to have a good defensive game and Breanna had to keep the ball low, and she did, and we backed her up, especially at key times."
