Lockport stops Lemont 1-0 in softball

Yogi Berra coined the phrase "it ain't over till it's over."

But When Lockport junior center fielder Katelyn Braget made a great catch at the fence for the first out of the seventh inning Lockport pitcher Sarah Porzel got the feeling the game was over. And she was right.

Porzel tossed a two-hit shutout as Lockport handed Lemont its second straight loss with a 1-0 victory over the Indians Friday at Lemont.

Porzel (5-1), a senior right-hander, struck out 10, hit one and walked none.

But with the Porters (13-6) clinging to the lead in the bottom of the seventh, Lemont sophomore left fielder Leah Challenger led off and put a charge into a Porzel pitch.

The ball sailed to straight away center field where Braget went back and made the one-handed catch high above her head at the fence.

"I covered my face with my hands as Katelyn caught it," Porzel said. "I was like 'Oh my God,' we owe the game to her.

"I know the game isn't over until the last out, but when she made that catch I pretty much knew we were going to win."

"I honestly thought it was over," said Braget who reached up at the fence to haul it in. "There's no warning track, so I was scared. I just caught it and it was hanging on the glove. It made it kind of exciting."

Porzel then completed the victory by striking out the final two batters. Lemont fell to 15-6.

Lockport scored in the top of the first as Braget opened the game by reaching on an error. Sophomore second baseman Kayleigh Bertram and senior third baseman Brittany Wilson put down perfect sacrifices to move Braget to third.

Junior shortstop Rebecca Baltikas then knocked in Braget when she lined an 0-2 pitch to right for a base hit.

Two days earlier, Baltikas had the Porters' only two hits in a 1-0 loss to Sandburg. However, she also made an error that led to the run and a base running mistake in the seventh.

But Friday, Baltikas bounced back big time with two hits and she had the game-winning RBI.

"It feels amazing, I had to get back in the game," Baltikas said. "I knew we had to make a big play, so I just swung and hit it."

Following Baltikas' first inning base hit, Lemont senior ace righty pitcher Suzie Rzegocki settled in and struck out the next nine hitters.

Rzegocki (10-3) suffered her second straight loss. She allowed four hits, walked none and struck out 15 batters.

With the 15 strikeouts, she moved into fourth on the IHSA's all-time strikeout list with 1,300 for her career.

"I was just a little nervous to start," Rzegocki said. "I was still feeling a little down about (Thursday's 3-2 loss to Oak Forest) and was excited about playing Lockport. They executed really well and were just better than us."

Porzel retired the first nine batters before Lemont sophomore center fielder Hayley Bridwell reached on a bunt single to open the fourth. One out later, Rzegocki sacrificed her to second and up stepped Challenger, only to be robbed of a potentially-tying hit on a nice over the shoulder catch by Baltikas on a flare to short.

Indians senior shortstop Lauren Panek had the other hit, a one out single over first base in the fifth. But she was stranded there. Junior Monica Strube pinch hit and led-off the sixth by getting hit by a pitch, but she was stranded at second.

Wilson and junior first baseman Jenny Festin had the other hits for the Porters, who stranded runners at second and third in the sixth.

"This win definitely fired us up," Porzel said. "(Rzegocki) is an amazing pitcher, so for us to do well against them is outstanding."
