High school highlights

Lockport 1, Joliet Township 0 -- At Lockport, Kim Malacina didn't realize that she had just thrown a no-hitter. Truth be told, the Lockport pitcher was just as happy not to know the fact until after the Porters (14-10, 5-5) edged JT (7-21, 2-7) in a SouthWest Suburban Blue game.
USF recruit Malacina (4-3) only allowed one walk and hit a batter on the mound but also started the winning rally for the Porters in the fifth. She reached second on an infield error and was replaced by courtesy runner Cassie Walisiak, who scored on Rebecca Baltikas' RBI single.

"It was a good day," said Malacina. "I have an amazing defense behind me and they made all of the plays. We've been losing because we've been making errors, so this was a good team win."

The no-hit bid was nearly spoiled in the seventh when Haley Ambrosch smashed a deep fly to center. Katelyn Braget made a nice running catch on the play. Jenny Festin (2-for-3) led the way for the six Porters with hits.

Although the Steelmen (7-21, 2-7) have struggled this season, they hope that the return of Ambrosch -- out for six weeks with an injury -- makes them a darkhorse in the postseason.

"I told the girls that conference is just a patch on a jacket," JT coach Laurie Markatos-Pappas said. "It's about how you perform in May and we still haven't peaked yet."

Minooka 3, Plainfield South 2 -- At Plainfield, Minooka (19-8, 11-1) pushed across a run in the top of the eighth for the Southwest Prairie game. South (13-9) in scored twice in the seventh inning for the 2-2 tie.

Leah Roman led Minooka at 3-for-4 with an RBI. Sam Kubinski was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. Starting pitcher Nicole Vogrin blanked South on 4 hits in 6 innings and also was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Tiffany Startz and Melissa Reyes drove in the two runs for Plainfield South.

Lincoln-Way Central 16, Rich East 1 -- At Park Forest, unbeaten Gabe Gavoni tossed a five-inning 3-hitter for her fifth victory of the season. Alex Weber and Aly Holzhauer totaled 5 hits and 5 RBIs for the Knights (25-4). Holzhauer doubled twice.

Lemont 1, Tinley Park 0 -- At Lemont, Suzie Rzegocki (13-3) pitched a 1-hitter with 19 strikeouts and no walks for the Indians (18-6, 12-2) in their South Suburban win. Maleigha Buck had 2 hits and scored on Sarah Forzley's double.

Lincoln-Way East 9, Bradley-Bourbonnais 0 -- At Bourbonnais late Wednesday, Brittany McElmury (7-1) pitched a no-hitter. She struck out 16 and walked none. Christina Signore had 4 hits (double) for East (18-7, 9-2) in the SouthWest Suburban Red win. McElmury had 3 hits. Kelly Laas had 2 hits and drove in 2 runs.

Marian Catholic 5, Providence 2 -- At New Lenox, Providence Catholic (12-13, 7-7) slipped below the .500 mark with the loss. Brittany Hanrahan went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Sarah Budz also was 2-for-4 and drove in a run.

Coal City 4, Gardner-South Wilmington 3 -- At Coal City, Shelby McGlasson's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave the Coalers (18-10, 12-4) a win in their final regular-season game. Karla Shappell drove in a pair of runs in a 3-run fifth that got Coal City on the board and gave the Coalers a 3-2 lead. Brittani Martin led GSW with 2 hits, including a double.

Wilmington 7, Westmont 2 -- At Westmont, Anna Strong had 3 hits and 3 RBIs for the Wildcats (18-9, 12-4) in the Interstate Eight. Kaitlin Nolan and Kaylee Shell had 2 hits. Lexi Southall tripled. Tiffany Tutor pitched the win.

Oswego 10, Romeoville 1 -- At Oswego, Ely Conway had the only RBI for Romeoville.

Red Devils make every run count in softball win over Munster

LOWELL | Times No. 7 Lowell took advantage of both its opportunities, while No. 1 Munster missed a pair of good ones. The result was a 2-1 Red Devil LAC Black victory.

Both teams started the game 10-2 in conference play, tied with Andrean. With only two conference games left for each team, Thursday afternoon's affair promised to be a doozy. Fans were not disappointed.

Munster's first missed opportunity came in the first inning. Megan Paradzinski led off with a single and promptly stole second, giving the Mustangs a runner in scoring position with nobody out. But Paradzinski was stranded when the next three batters were out on a popup and a pair of strikeouts.

"We were not aggressive at the plate today," Munster coach Beth Vesa said. "We had a couple of counts in our favor, and took some defensive swings."

The Red Devils took advantage in the bottom of the second when freshman Megan Bolanowski, playing for injured shortstop Kelly Johnson, jacked a homer to center field to put the Devils up 1-0.

In the fifth, Munster's Jessica Clusserath led off with a single. She took off for second as Laura Hennig attempted to bunt. But the bunt popped straight up to Lowell pitcher Allyssa Reed, who promptly doubled Clusserath off first to squelch the rally.

"That was a big play for us," Lowell coach Pete Iussig said. "Paradzinski was 2-for-2 and coming up next. Clearing the bases was the best thing Allyssa could've done for herself."

The missed opportunities for Munster loomed larger when it scored one run in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 2-1, and got the tying run as far as third base before the Mustangs ran out of outs.

The pitching hero was Reed, who took a cortisone shot in her non-throwing shoulder earlier in the week. She finished with six strikeouts and only one walk.

"No way was I going to miss this game," Reed said. "This one meant a lot to our team. Munster's good, and beating them lets us know we're pretty good, too. I don't hurt anywhere right now, it's all good."
