Tigers sweep Saint Xavier, improve to 4-0 in the CCAC

CHICAGO-The Tigers’ softball team ran off their 17th and 18th consecutive victories, as they swept a doubleheader from Saint Xavier University (Ill.) on Wednesday, winning 8-3 and 7-3.
In the first game, the Tigers posted a run in the first game, before Saint Xavier rallied to take a 3-1 lead with three runs in the fourth. The Tigers answered with a pair of runs in the fifth, knotting the score at 3-3. The Tigers then used a five-run seventh inning to break the game open. A two-run single from Rachelle Renfro (Macon, Ill.) and a two-run double from Nora Duffy (Oak Lawn, Ill.) were the big hits in the seventh inning.
The victory made a winner of Lauren Chessum (Wheaton, Ill.). She improved to 12-1 overall, as she allowed three earned runs on six hits, striking out three.
The Tigers offense pounded out 11 hits, led by Marcia Grimes’ (Grant Park, Ill.) three hits. Grimes also scored three runs. Duffy and Caitlin Gidcumb (Spring Valley, Ill.) added two hits each.
In the second game, the Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead after four innings, but saw Saint Xavier rally for three runs over the fifth and sixth innings. The four-run cushion proved to be the difference for the Tigers. Rachel Comoglio (Logansport, Ind.) had the big hit for the Tigers, a third inning three-run home run.
Kellie Koverman (Princeton, Ind.) picked up the win for the Tigers, as she improved to 12-1. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits and struck out three.
Comoglio and Erin Meyerhoff (Minooka, Ill.) led the Tigers with two hits each. Comoglio finished with four runs batted in. All seven runs were scored by seven different players.
The Tigers improved to 24-3 overall and 4-0 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. They return to action on Thursday, April 3, when they host Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.

The Tigers’ softball team rallied with a pair of runs in the sixth inning to post a 6-5 victory in their game against Ohio Dominican University, then erupted for seven runs in their 7-2 victory over 12th-ranked Bethel College (Ind.) in the final game of the ONU Invitational on Saturday.
In their first game of the day, the Tigers opened with a 4-1 lead after the top of the third inning against Ohio Dominican.
Ohio Dominican rallied over the next three innings, scoring twice in the bottom of the third and once each in the fourth and fifth innings.
Trailing 5-4 in the top of the sixth, back-to-back run scoring singles from Amy Murray (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and Kim Murray (Oak Lawn, Ill.), scored Jennifer Juergens (Bourbonnais, Ill.) and Marcia Grimes (Grant Park, Ill.), which proved to be the game-winning run.
Kellie Koverman (Princeton, Ind.) pitched the final two innings to nail the win down for Lauren Chessum (Wheaton, Ill.). Chessum went the first five innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on nine hits and struck out two. She was not helped by five Tiger errors. Koverman surrendered only one hit in her two innings of relief, as she picked up the save.
Amy Murray and Caitlin Gidcumb (Spring Valley, Ill.) each pounded out two hits, while six others had one hit each.
Against Bethel, the two schools were deadlocked after two innings. The Tigers then posted three runs in the bottom of the third, with two runs scoring on Rachelle Renfro’s (Macon, Ill.) single up the middle.
Bethel cut the lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the fifth, but the Tigers pushed the lead back to two, with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth.
The Tigers added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to post the five-run win.
Koverman allowed two earned runs on five hits, while striking out five, to post the win.
Kim Murray led the offense with three hits and two runs scored. Grimes, Amy Muray and Gidcumb each added two hits, as the Tigers registered 11 hits in the win.
The two wins upped the Tigers’ record to 30-4. They return to action on Tuesday, April 8, when they play at Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in a doubleheader, beginning at 3 p.m.
