In four days, Lauren McNulty went from the highs of a career-best game to the lows of a painful injury.
The Downers North softball standout belted two home runs and had seven RBIs in the Trojans’ 8-3 win Friday over Neuqua Valley, smashing a three-run shot and a grand slam.
But in Monday’s 4-3 loss at Glenbard West, the Butler University-bound senior third baseman was hit in her throwing hand by a line drive. X-rays later showed a broken bone near the tip of her finger that will sideline her for at least a few games.
“The good news if there is any is that it’s the best place on the finger to have a break,” Trojans’ coach Mark Magro said. “She should be 100 percent in a week or two.”
Showing her competitiveness, McNulty (who went 2-for-3) stayed in the game after the injury and actually delivered a two-out RBI single that briefly put the Trojans (3-5, 0-1 in conference) ahead 3-2.
But McNulty exited the game after her hit, and Glenbard West rallied for the win (capped by a one-out run in the bottom of the seventh). The Hilltoppers’ first-year coach is Mary McGrane, a former star player at Downers North.
Pitcher Kendall Ryndak, who had 13 strikeouts in the win over Neuqua Valley, allowed just two earned runs in 6/1-3 innings. Besides McNulty, Ryndak (RBI single) and Ellen Jagielo had the Trojans’ only other hits on Monday.

Nice to see a great kid get her due!!!! You lead by example Lauren and I thank you for that!!!
How do you want to go out on your final home game at-bat? Well if you're Lauren McNulty, you hit a walk-off grand slam homerun to beat crosstown powerhouse Downers South. In a great, well played game by both teams, DGN found itself trailing by one run going into the bottom of the seventh. Sam Wickham led off with a single up the middle. Anneliese Jagielo and Jess Honaker both followed with bunt singles to load the bases. McNulty, who had been walked and hit by a pitch, hit the first pitch over the fence to send the North crowd home happy
