McNulty drives in some more

Lauren McNulty continued to enjoy her breakout season on Monday.

After not having a home run last season, McNulty started the day ranked second in DuPage County with 9 homers. While she didn’t add to her long ball total, the junior third baseman proved just as dangerous.

McNulty drove in all 3 of her team’s runs to carry the Trojans to a 3-1 West Suburban Silver Conference softball triumph over host Glenbard West in Glen Ellyn.

“I worked on my mechanics a lot over the winter,” McNulty said. “I’m seeing the ball a lot better than I did last year.”

“She’s been a great hitter all year,” Trojans coach Mark Magro said. “She’s clutch with two outs. She’s clutch with people on base. She goes with the pitch. You can see she goes to right field, she goes to center field.”

McNulty hopes to play in the Big Ten.

“She’s a good, solid player,” Glenbard West coach Lee Maciejewski. “It’s obvious just by watching her she likes playing the game.”

McNulty put Downers North (20-13, 8-3) ahead to stay with a 2-run triple in the top of the third inning. After Anneliese Jagielo led off with a single and Amanda Tran followed with a walk, McNulty sent a liner into the right-field gap that split the outfielders, allowing both runners to score to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead.

The visitors added an insurance run in the seventh en route to their fifth win in a row. Tran tripled to start the inning and McNulty singled up the middle to make it 3-1.

Downers North sophomore Julianne Burton earned the victory as a last-minute replacement for scheduled starter Nicole Pacyga, who experienced a sore arm during warm-ups.

Burton used a biting drop ball to strand 10 Glenbard West runners. The right-hander allowed 8 hits and recorded 6 strikeouts without walking anyone.

“She battled,” Magro said. “For not being prepared to pitch and not having her best stuff, she did great today.”

The Hilltoppers (15-13, 5-6) scored their lone run on Erica Lew’s leadoff homer in the second inning.

Cassie Goggin lost her first game in three decisions. The Glenbard West freshman allowed 9 hits and issued 4 walks, but stranded 10 Downers North runners thanks in part to 9 strikeouts.

“She’s got a lot of potential,” Maciejewski said. “She’s got a live arm.”

Melissa Rauch went 3-for-4 for the Hilltoppers.
