Wildcats rally over Cherokees in softball Thursday, May 17, 2007 12:51 AM CDT Post a Comment | Email this story | Print this story

PREP SOFTBALL
CEDAR LAKE | Hanover Central, fresh off its sixth Porter County Conference Tournament win in the past seven years, was looking to add the round-robin championship to its laurels Wednesday afternoon against Morgan Twp.
The Times No. 9 Cherokees were the only obstacle in the Wildcats' way as both teams came into the contest with 6-0 conference marks.
Hanover Central saved its best for last as it entered the bottom of the sixth inning trailing 1-0 before it rallied to claim a 3-1 victory.
Kelsey Jankowski started the sixth inning with a triple and Morgan Austgen got a bunt hit and stole second, giving the Wildcats runners on second and third with no outs.
Michelle Madden struck out the next two batters and had a strike on Samantha Plant when she hit a line shot to right that dropped in for a hit and drove home two runs. Shannon Kiraly and Jordan Kramer followed with hits accounting for the final run.
"Our coach always tells us to see our hits when we come up to bat," Plant said. "When I came up to the plate, I was looking for that hole.
"I envisioned it and got a pitch right down the middle and drove it through."
Wildcat freshman pitcher Jessica Toth got out of a couple jams in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Liz Clark got a hit and went to second on a passed ball, but Toth escaped by striking out Madden and Dawn Hewitt.
The sixth saw Nicole Jessen lead off with a double, but the next three batters grounded out Kiraly to Molly Fairhurst.
"I had my stuff today," Toth said. "I kept them off balance with a good change-up and both my curve and screwball were working for me also."
"This was a big win for us," Hanover coach Larry McMillen said. "Morgan Twp. is a good team and they always give us a battle. We were a little anemic at the plate for six innings as we were pressing too hard and trying to hit the first pitch.
"Winning the conference tournament and round-robin makes this a good year. Now we'll build on that and try for a sectional win. We are fighters and don't quit."
