Tinley Park's Bonezek displays talent Softball notebook June 5, 2008 Recommend
BY TONY BARANEK Staff Writer Tinley Park ought to have high hopes for the future after the 2008 season the Titans got from Stacie Bonezek. The freshman third baseman led the Titans in runs (24), batting average (.456), stolen bases (11) and RBI (27) and tied junior teammate Elle Gerdes for the team lead in home runs with five. Surprising? "I actually had pretty high hopes for her this year after I went to see her over the summer," Tinley Park coach Sheila Reed said. "Now did I think she would come up to the varsity and put up these kinds of numbers? No. But I knew she had talent." Bonezek is a three-sport athlete at Tinley Park, also competing in volleyball and basketball. "She just lives, eats and sleeps (athletics)," Reed said. "So she just kind of came to us this way." Reed is expecting to return eight players from a 2008 squad that finished 17-19 overall and 7-9 in the South Suburban Conference Blue. Bonezek, Gerdes and senior Paige Swaim earned All-Conference honors. "I don't want to say it was a bad year, but I definitely expected us to have a better record," Reed said. "We had a couple of patches there where we lost to some teams we should have beaten, and got in some losing streaks. "Having both Stacie and Elle back will be nice, and we've got six others returning who should help us next season."
