Lemont's Rzegocki sets marks

From staff reports LEMONT -- Suzie Rzegocki put her name into the Illinois state record book Tuesday afternoon, not once, but twice.

The Purdue University-bound senior struck out 14 to set the career record with 1,457 and finished the 5-inning game with her state record 14th no-hitter to lead Lemont High School to a 19-0 semifinal win over Thorton Fractional North in the Class AA Lemont Regional.

Rzegocki (20-3) walked just 1 in the rout. The shutout was her 10th in a row. She extended her scoreless innings streak to 74.1.

The Indians scored 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning and 7 more in the second. Sarah Forzley had a double and a triple and 3 RBIs and Kristin Preissler added a single and triple and 3 RBI. Lemont (25-6) faces today's Stagg-Mt. Assisi winner at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Class AA softball regionals
Lincoln-Way East 16, Rich East 0 -- At Lincoln-Way East, Brittany McElmury (10-1) threw a 5-inning perfect game with 13 strikeouts for East (28-7). Alisa Goler doubled, homered and drove in 3 runs. Ashley Linhart added 2 hits and 3 RBIs and Kelly Laas had 2 hits and 3 RBIs. East plays the Minooka-Providence winner at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Plainfield Central 12, Sandwich 2 -- At the Waubonsie Regiona, the top-seeded Wildcats (27-7) had no difficulty advancing to a 10 a.m. Saturday title game against today's Waubonsie Valley-Oswego winner. Danielle Belobraydich paced a 12-hit attack with 2 hits and 5 RBIs. Winning pitcher Sam Corban doubled twice. Johnna Silver and Sarah Hurley collected 2 hits. Corban (9-3) allowed 6 hits and fanned 3.

Lockport 6, Tinley Park 0 -- At Andrew, Sarah Porzel's 5-hitter helped the Porters (18-14) qualify for Saturday's title game. Lockport will play today's Andrew-Bloom winner at 11 a.m. Porzel (7-4) struck out 10 with a walk. Kayleigh Bertram and Jenny Festin paced a 10-hit attack with 2 hits. Rebecca Baltikas added 2 RBIs.

Lincoln-Way Central 10, Rich Central 0 -- At Crete, the top-seeded Knights (31-4) meet today's Marian Catholic-Crete-Monee survivor Saturday for regional honors. Cassie Redman and Courtney Dunker had 2 hits. Sarah Shizas hit a 2-run homer. Winning pitcher Carly DeMarco (14-3) teamed with sophomore Jackie Dugan to strike out 12.

Upstart Huskies' season concludes on a downer

BOLINGBROOK -- When it comes to upset victories, more is rarely enough.

Just ask the Naperville North softball team. After upsetting Naperville Central in the Bolingbrook Regional semifinal Thursday, the Huskies (10-20) had their sights set on Downers Grove North (22-14) in the regional final Saturday.

But the Huskies were left longing as the Trojans took the regional title 3-0.

The first inning seemed to bode well for the Huskies.

Leadoff hitter Lindsey Remegi opened with a walk, and after Kelly Skooglund bunted foul with two strikes for the first out, Kris Lee moved Remegi to second on a fielder's choice. Remegi advanced to third on a wild pitch from Downers Grove North pitcher Jules Burton. But Burton was able to retire Huskies shortstop Sarah Adam to end the threat.

In the bottom of the first, Huskies pitcher Katie Wehrli struck out the side, and Huskies fans were feeling pretty good about their team's chances at another upset.

"I was really feeling confident after first couple of innings," Naperville North coach Jerry Kedziora said.

But the Trojans bats came alive in the third. Center fielder Katie Iser led off with a triple to right-center, and after Sarah Latshaw struck out and Annelise Jagielo was hit by a pitch, Amanda Tran knocked in two runs with a double to center. Lauren McNulty singled her home to put the Trojans up 3-0 - all the scoring they would need.

"It took the game away from us," Kedziora said. "We weren't able to bounce back. We were kind of flat today."

Burton finished with six strikeouts and two walks while allowing only one hit.

"That was one of the first drop-ball pitchers we've seen all season," Kedziora said.

Burton was relieved in the sixth by Nicole Pacyga. She allowed a single to Remegi, the first hitter she faced, who advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pacyga then settled down. She struck out Skooglund and induced Lee to pop out to third, which McNulty caught while running full speed into the fence. Adam drew a walk, but Brittany Sproat grounded to second to end the threat.

Pacyga shut down the Huskies in the seventh, striking out Kristen Thornton and pinch hitter Lauren Childers. Wehrli tried to keep the Huskies alive by drawing a walk and advancing to second on a wild pitch, but Cori Coulston struck out to end the game - and the Huskies' season.

"I think they'll come back a better team (next year)," Kedziora said of his squad.
